Ashish Jha Recommended In Meteorological AFSB

4
Myself Ashish Jha who recently got recommended from AFSB, Varanasi for 74th Course Meteorological branch. I was really unaware about the procedure and methodology of SSB but I get through. One important aspect or you may say experience after my SSB is ‘To be the fresher is the golden opportunity’ and ‘You only need to enjoy all the task’.

When I went to AFSB I prepared myself for being natural in the whole interview, to be raw for trainability, not to show attitude to any JCO’s, assessors, batch mates and make friends. The journey of my experiences of AFSB success is as follows.

1. DAY-1(Screening):

First I prepared best for verbal & non-verbal test that really helps much because this in turn improves my OIR-Officer’s Intelligence Rating. Many people consider this test unimportant but this best OIR will take to achieve good grades.

2. DAY-1(Screening):

I made simple social story for the picture I got on my screening day-hazy picture and as per my perception ‘A lady cooking food and provides it to villagers free of cost’. Friends when I went for discussion I first narrated my story in very simple way and when I undergone discussion I forget my own story and concentrate on other stories and finding out the most common theme from all the narrations. After getting enough points from other’s stories I started discussing about the common theme while rest other busy in discussing their own story, friends I think this helps me much to display my quality of co-operating the group and team building.

3. DAY-1(Psychology):

On the same day of screening after getting positive result we all screened in candidate sent for psychology package that includes-TAT(12 story = 11 pict. & 12th blank), WAT, SRT. Friends I had not skip a single WAT and SRT; I just answer my basic responses for 60 WAT and 60 SRT. In TAT I cooked all simple, short and sweet stories.

4. DAY-2(Interview):

After satisfactory completion of psychology I put through the interview which is nothing but the formal interaction with president of board. As per my understanding he (interviewer) link my every statement with my body language & confidence and they don’t need fluent English for communication they were there just to see your confidence & commitment towards this service.

5. DAY-3 & 4(GTO-I & II):

GTO-I & II which were really good and satisfactory. The most important recipe for this task is to enjoy them all with your batch mates.

6. DAY-5(Conference):

When I come to know about my recommendation it was unbelievable for me. I had been asked only one question in conference ‘How do you prepare for SSB’ my natural reply was- One of my friend guided me about this and I fulfil his dream of being recommended from SSB.

14

tgc 116 ssb candidates

I am Janendra babu Yadav, aspirant of armed forces; I have given ssb attempts 5 times but none of time I was recommended. I am writing my experience of my 5th attempt. Those 5 days this gave me wonderful experience which I will not forget. I want you to publish my experience. It starts here……….

ssb interview candidates experience
It was my TGC-116 SSB interview call letter. I received one month before the ssb date. My ssb date was on 4 Oct 2012. As soon as I got my call letter. I stated preparing for it by practicing for hours in front of mirror and searching on net about latest stuff, finally the day came.

I reported Bhopal MCO on 4th of October, there i met 3 guys. They were awesome. I enjoyed there company. We all reached Bhopal selection centre by 1 noon. I was very positive about screening in, I was natural and confident in narration and was screened in with other 49 among 206 boys but unfortunately those 3 friends whom i met in station did not make through.

It was 21 SSB, my roommates were fantastic, I never met such guys in my life before. We developed great bonding in 5 days. I was now confident about my next 4 days. All those were really very passionate to join army.

1st day was Psychological test. My TATs was good, WAT was ok, and SRT was ok.

2nd day was GTO-1st. My performance in GD 1st was not satisfactory, I was left alone by my group. My communication was not appealing. Might be I was not loud and clear. In GD-2nd I initiated, my performance and contribution was good. In group planning I brought good points but I think I was little dominating there. In PGT I was silent in obstacle 1 as there was fish market everyone wanted to hold phatta and bali, obstacle 2nd I was giving idea but didn’t get chance to do anything as the guys were in completion mood, in third obstacle when everyone’s ideas failed, I gave them idea, no one listened to me they were busy in speaking and trying without any objective. GTO sir said someone of your group has given good idea then kept there mouth shut and went in front and helped them, awe crossed that obstacle. 4th obstacle was really challenging with GTO’s help we did it. In this obstacle my idea’s helped the group. Then my contribution in snake race was good according to me, I coordinated and cooperated with group. I boosted energy of my group whenever required. HGT was little tough but we did it in time, GTO was putting pressure on us by saying “Gentleman you are engineers and you are not able to do this simple obstacle. Shame on you, you are running out of time etc”. My Lecturete was okay need to be more fluent. I was thinking and speaking like ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee’. In individual obstacle i did 12. I could have done 14.

3rd day was GTO-2nd. As only Command task and FGT was left we were called late in GTO grounds. We reached ground and were sitting on bench on ground. As sudden GTO came from front gate which was nearly 100m away from where we were sitting. WE looked on him but didn’t wished him morning as we thought when he will come near then we will wish but he came in front of us and said “you F*****s you don’t know how to give respect to officers, You assho***s, pity on you, agar koi jawan hota to me use kacha kha jata, mera beta b tumari age ka h, but uske pas manners hai, tumari tarah nae hai. Behan***d” Then with little courage I only said sorry. After that he cooled down, there after our Command task started. I was called 5 times as subordinate. My task was really very difficult, GTO was helping me by giving suggestions. I did task in 3 different approaches.
In FGT the GTO was not having any files or pens. He came near us and was only observing each group member.Later in the end, He briefed us about tomorrow’s conference in details and explained what we look. I liked few of his lines I am writing it here. He said “We are not interested in Phatta, Balli and whether you were able to do task or not. We are interested in knowing how your personality comes out in doing phatta and balli. How you behave and react. We are not interested in knowing your past and present. We are assessing on your future qualities, that after passing out from academy. How you will look like, will you be ready to sacrifice your family and yourself when called upon to do so. Actually here we are looking your future. That is why this SSB interview is different from corporate interviews”
My interview was on same day. President (Brigadier) of 21 ssb took my interview it last around 45 minutes. i Am giving u every detail of our conversation:
As i opened door,

President: Come in Jitender
Me: Sorry sir, it is Janendra (standing near chair)
P: Ohh! Sorry Janendra, Sit down
M: Thank you sir
P: you know Janendra It’s a human psychology u read what u wanted to read and Jitender was my favorite hero of our time.
M: Fav hero (I repeated His words, He thought Jitendra is my fav hero too)
P: Have u soon any of his movies?
M: Yes sir
P: name them
M: I don’t remember the name of any movies sir.
P: tell the story of any movie of his movie.
M: (I described a short story of one of his movie, which was incomplete, I didn’t remember there:
P: I have not seen any such movie. Okay leave it. How is your stay here?
M: Sir comfortable.
P: you are from Allahabad. Tell me something about it.
M: (I gave very long answer for 2 minutes and in last said Allahabad has produced 7 prime minister in nearly 6 decades)
P: then still Allahabad is not developed despite having 7 PMs. I stayed there for 4 days. Roads of Allahabad are not good, problem of water and light. What you think who is responsible for it?
M: Sir, We people are responsible
P: How you are responsible! I think some other is responsible.
M: Sir, politicians are responsible, they are not developing it.
P: okay, Janendra You got Certificate from army welfare education society. How you got it?
M: sir, after passing b.tech 1styear. My father told me about Army welfare education society Scholarship. I applied and got scholarship and merit certificate.
P: okay. You secured low marks in class 12thas compared to 10th class. Why?
M: sir, I was weak in chemistry and computer science in class 12th.
P: have you not done extra coaching or tuition to make them strong?
M: I did sir, I took extra classes in school, took help of friends irresptive of that I got low marks.
P: (He looked my PIQ) you did not much paid attention to studies. Your attention was on sports. Which one is important, a sport or class 12 studies?
M: sir, 12th studies.
(As I completed my answer. I thought he will speak something, but he didn’t speak anything. He was looking on me. Then I again continued)
M: sir I got 67.2% and its not bad marks.
P: I am not saying it’s bad. I am saying you secured 75.6 in 10th and 67.2 in 12. Then why such decline in percentage. For example if a man is earning 50,000 per month and next month if he will get 30,000. It is bad. But if he is earning 30,000 and next month he got 50,000 it is good for him.
M: sir my concepts were not clear. I took coaching despite of it I got low marks.
P: okay leave it. What was your AIEEE score?
M: sir my rank was around 90,000.
P: Why you didn’t take Army Institute of Technology?
M: Sir, my rank was not enough to take admission in it. To get admission in it one need to require good rank less than 30,000.
P: but one candidate I interviewed few days back. His rank was 60,000 and he got admission in it.
M: may be sir his father has won some gallantry awards, so he got admission despite such high rank. According to my knowledge less than 30,000 rank is required in AIEEE to get admission.
P: okay what are you doing now days in home?
M: Sir, I am Preparing for PSUs and taking coaching of GATE.
P: What is PSUs and GATE?
M: sir PSUs are Public Sector Companies such as power grid, NTPC, BHEL as they take fresher’s in their company through GATE exam scorecard, which stands for Graduate Test in Engineering for M.Tech programs in IITs and NITs.
P: What will happen if army also take candidates for SSB through GATE score card, like those candidates will come for TGC SSB who have at least 70 percentile in GATE.
M: sir, armies don’t want intellectuals. Army wants a common man having common sense with 15 OLQs. Developing knowledge is easier then developing personality, it takes nearly one month to master on any subject but it take many years in developing good personality like gentleman. But low cutoff in gate is most welcome according to me. As a result fewer candidates will come for screening. It will be good for you in management and good for us also.
P: How you spent you time with family?
M: Sir now days I spent my most of the time in home. Me, my sister and mom spent dinner time, tea time in laughing and sharing views, Brother generally calls us on Sundays or whenever he gets time. Father calls us daily from leh. So we all family members are connected through phones.
P: okay, what is market rate of arahar dal?
M: (I dint expected this question, I took time and then spoke) sir 63 RS per kg.
P: You tell me the name of shop; I will also buy from there. What is the market rate of cauli flower?
M: sir 12 rupees per piece.
P: okay, where are Aravali Mountains?
M: sir in Madhya Pradesh.
P: IF Rajasthan people will listen it. They will beat you.
(Then he asked me 5 more geographical questions. None of them I answered)
P: The electrical sockets plug is of 5 amps and 15 amps. Why not they are of 10 amps?
M: sir, according to ohm’s law. V=IR. R being constant for a device. If I is large then voltage required is low and in devices such as refrigerator, geyser, A.C High current is required for heating purpose. That is why there wires are thick and they require 1a5a amp socket plug.
P: but my home AC requires only 5 amps
M: may be sir. Your AC has some new technology. J But generally heating devices require 15aa amp socket.
P: Tell me about your father?
M; Sir my father is nb/sub in AOC and currently posted in 14 corps OMC. He has spent his 25 glorious years in army.
P: OMC stands for?
M: Ordnance Maintenance Unit.
P: tell me you two good qualities and two qualities which you would like to improve?
M: sir my good qualities are I am innovative and motivator. And I would like to take more interest towards books and want to improve my stamina.
P: how you are innovative?
M: sir, once we were making robots in college event, a there we needed propellers of water robots. Then I gave them idea to use computer processor fan. Firstly they rejected my idea but they later used my idea. It was very innovative idea.
P: from where your brother was recommended d for NDA.
M: Sir he was recommended from Bhopal board twice in NDA and in TES, 8 months back.
P: Janendra you would like to ask anything from me?
M: no sir.
P: nice talking to you. Thank you
M: thank you sir.

I was laughing in whole conversation and he was sipping black tea. J Whatever I recalled I wrote. I think my interview was not as better as I wanted. I have told my experience to fresher and repeaters to get ready to tackle unexpected question in interview. You can’t fool them. If you really want to join Indian army by leaving all things behind then only join.

From this interview I inferred he was having my Self Description and PIQ of my previous interview if TGC-115, there I wrote in Self Description that I help my mom in home activities. And he has asked questions also from my previous SSB PIQ and Psychological report.

I was expecting my selection but my heart beaked on 5th day. Now I am preparing for my last army SSB chance. Hope this time I will make my dream into realty. Wish me guys.

This was my first time facing SSB interview, so all I had in my mind was some posts from few experienced people on this site who talked about it and explained the proceedings of an SSB interview procedure. So here, I will share my experience, see if it helps anyone like me and as every other Indian will provide some free suggestions.

Pick up:

As asked in the call letter to wait at the designated place on the time mentioned and there you will have a bus from Indian Navy/ Army/ Air Force to pick u up right on time. I had a bus waiting for me and many others there at MCO, Coimbatore at Coimbatore Jn. exactly at 6:00 am, true to every word in my call letter.

Now some important information:
There are two reporting times: 6:00 am & 2:00 p.m.
If your reporting time is 6am your Stage I will start the same day only,
if its 2 pm then Stage I starts the following day.

Day 1-Stage I:

Document verification is the first thing that is done, and you are provided with Chest no. Two Intelligence tests are there involving: 50 questions each & 30 minutes to complete each. Reasoning, simple mathematics, some puzzles etc. (very elementary level). Just time management is the catch …so be a little efficient with time.

Picture Perception Discussion Test (PPDT):
Then a hazy picture is shown for 30 seconds and you are given 4 minutes after that to write a story on that (Give your imagination power a full swing and create a masterpiece of a heroic activity out of the picture and keep it very inspiring 😉 but don’t be over dramatic, keep it simple). Then you will be provided Breakfast after which all candidates are divided in groups according to the Chest no. s for a Group Discussion
on the stories written by you n your group members.

GD procedure: First each one of you in the group would be asked to talk about your stories individually one by one and then, they ask the group to start the GD on making a common story(now this is a crucial part of Stage I so In GD try to speak out as clearly as you can but don’t be aggressive but at the same time keep a fair amount of command in your voice, and while reading the story out as well, be flawless with good communication skills and remember: you do the GD well, the Stage I is all yours.

After Stage-I is over all the candidates were gathered around to announce the screened in members from Stage I. Now if you survive Stage-I, Stage-II begins the day after or else u r straight away sent back home.

Well being positive let’s talk about

Stage II:

Day 2: TAT (thematic Appreciation test) WAT (Word Association Test) SRT (Situation Reaction test),
Day 2/3: PI (Personal Interview) on same day or day after depends on Chest no.
Day 3 & 4: Then starts the fun part Group tasks n Individual tasks….
Day 5: Conference
for detailed info on the STAGE II activities you can find much on this site.

One of the Key stages of Stage II is Interview, Interview can be handled as you drive the motion of the interview your way…. that is turn it into the direction of topics you are great with and if you think you don’t hold firm ground in any topic (tech/general affairs/etc.) just try to keep the interviewer concentrated into your life events…. because you must be knowing a great deal about your life at least and then just be honest about everything and try to bring out your strengths but try to be average & intelligent (Indian armed forces are not looking out for Superman or He-man kinds) but not over smart and all else will just go fine with a good body language n a sweet smile. A good body language is an upright posture which doesn’t look imitated, hands always at ease rested on your knees, don’t use any hand gestures to communicate and just be natural.

Deciding Factor according to my perception (might differ person to person): GTO may grill you during the group tasks as well, so be prepared. Well at our SSB, rumors went out like GTO holds more power to recommend you and if he’s impressed you are good to go (even I felt so).

I don’t know how much truth is in it but yes what’s wrong in trying our best 2 impress him 😉 so give it your best shot… during Group tasks and Individual obstacles. Go for the kill like there’s no tomorrow. In stage II just be yourself & have some common sense and you will kill it 😉

Last day just recall all the questions that you couldn’t answer in your interview they might ask you some, I was asked a question that the Interviewing officer asked me to analyze on. During the conference look straight and bear a sweet smile and don’t be nervous as, if the damage has been done its already done, and if you have nailed you already have, the conference is just a “MU Dikhaai” kinds.

Well then will come the moment of truth … if you are recommended, you will be sent for Medicals on that night itself. We went for medicals at INHS Sanjivani, Cochin. Well that’s all about my experience, Am all clear for joining Indian Navy just waiting for the merit list.

“Recommended” was the word by the twilight of 10th August 2012 that had me all elated & a step closer to the Uniform I craved for 😉

Good Luck to all of you and wish me luck for the Merit list. Jai Hind

Wrong Body Language Which Screw Your Personal Interview

18

your body language shapes who you are

Not all are perfect, most of us feel nervous during certain tests and its a  normal human behavior, but what when  defence only needs confident men and women. You can’t simply keep this excuse during personal interview in SSB, you have to overcome your nervousness, which can improve your body language during personal interview because your non-verbal actions speaks more about you.

Before going further, lets talk on what makes SSB personal interview so different, difficult and tough to crack. Some of the points are:

  • IO do not react on your answers must, he never says correct or incorrect.
  • Sometimes he never looks at you and keep on doing some other work while you answer, you may feel that this questions is just for namesake. In short, he distracts you when you answer.
  • You face different questions, such as personal life questions and we are not habitual of answering such questions.
  • He cross check most of the time, there is no room for hiding if you are not a good player.
Now let’s take about what is poor body language and how it affects our performance in personal interviews.

Poor Body Language:

Your body language plays a vital role during personal interview, your non verbal actions speaks louder about your present condition. How do you speak, your sitting positions, your facial expressions and etc. It helps IO to analyse your total personality.
Some wrong body moves due to nervousness:-

low+power+pose+3low+power+pose2

  • Sitting in a low power pose: Most of us, who are not confident about personal interview just go in and surrender ourselves in front of IO. We gave some low power pose while sitting which clearly reflects our present condition, it tells that we are not confident at all.
  • Wrong Postures: Some of the postures like, making our body small by folding our hands, moving towards front frequently to justify something, touching your face or neck, looking somewhere but not at IO and so on.
You are well aware that IO can see you from top to bottom, and they actually want to see your body movements, that is why there is more sitting distance between you and IO. Sometimes, IO like a lifeless person constantly gaze at you to see your body movements, they can easily calculate your confidence and preparedness from your body movements.

How To Improve Our Body Language:

In reality most of us do not know how we are using our body while answering, we use to be so focused in answering and forget to control our body. But it can be improved with constant practice, it is all about improving your confidence level. At home, you may find yourself more confident, you say this time I am going to pass it, you promise that you will be confident through out the interview, but during interview you might feel little nervousness, it is all because of our hormones. You have to control your mind by telling it, ‘that this is just an informal discussion, IO is your friend, you know everything about you and that is what most important, if you feel nervous you will not get recommend this time also‘.
Some of the tips to boost our confidence level
  • Find some place to be alone, like bathroom, make some high power pose, try to, look at the mirror and smile. Tell your mind that you are confident and you can face anyone in this word.
  • Do not read anything, just relax, just be happy because you are going to talk with a old friend, and this talk can fetch you a badge of recommended candidate.
  • “Fake it till you make it” even though you are nervous, you are not allowed to show it, fake your mind that you are confident till you finish your interview.

Ayush Yadav Recommended In 10+2 Tech Navy

14

Hello Everyone, I am Ayush Yadav and I am sharing my SSB interview experience in this blog. I have got recommended in two SSB interviews, first one is 10+2 tech entry in Navy on 25 Aug’12 at NSB- Naval Selection Board, Coimbatore and another in NDA-AF on 22 Oct’12 at 11 SSB board Allahabad.

Also Read: My Experience at 11 SSB Allahabad

I passed my 10+2 this year from No.1 Air Force School, Gwalior and always its been a dream to be an Officer. Here I am telling about the first SSB experience of my life. The SSB interview was scheduled from 21 Aug’12 and I had to report at 6 a.m in the morning at MCO Coimbatore. I reached there after a train journey of two days at 5:45 a.m. I was amazed to see a huge crowd of boys  and parents accompanying them. Soon the Navy buses came and after checking  our call-up letters and loading our bags we sat in the bus that took us to Naval Selection Board, INS Agrani, Coimbatore. The campus was like every other defence establishment, next to  perfect. We were addressed by one of the personnel there and were asked to take out all our documents for verification since the call up for SSB interview in this entry is based on board PCM % and soon I came to know all the candidates were having the PCM aggregate of over 89% ( My aggregate is 91.33%). This is where your test of patience starts, you have to wait in a long line for your turn. After verification ,a chest number was assigned, I was allotted with no.75. We were given the identification form and the TA form to fill up and later we were also served with  breakfast containing bread jam ,butter, egg tea. A Total of 161 candidates reported on that day.

Day-1 : Stage-1 Testing: Screening

We were then asked to settle down in the Testing Hall for Stage-1 testing. I started talking to other candidates sitting near to me and made a couple of friends who also belonged to defence background same as me. At around 8:30, an officer briefed us about the tests we were to undertake. First was the  Intelligence test which consisted of two tests of 50 questions each and time 30 mins each .The question booklets were distributed and we had to solve some sample problems first to get familiar to the questions. Then the test started, questions were of logical and mathematical reasoning (same as in Arihant ). I finished quite early within 20 minutes and did all the questions. The second intelligence test paper was a little tough and took me 25 minutes or so, I could do 48 questions in it.

Our booklets were taken back and then we were briefed about the PPDT or the Picture Perception and Discussion Test, where we are supposed to observe a picture for 30 seconds , identify the characters , mention their age sex and mood in the box provided in answer sheet, write about the action  they are doing(like in a conversation, two people playing etc) within a minute and then write a story in the next 4 minutes. The story should contain 3 parts : What Led to situation, What is happening now and the Outcome( Please do not explain the picture ). The picture shown to us contained three men with only upper body visible and hands in the air.The image shown is always roughly drawn.Write a short and effective story where you show a central character who is young almost of your age solving an issue. Don’t worry too much about expressions but good English is a Plus Point. Then sheets are taken back and the groups were divided ( 8 ,10 ,12 or 15 candidates )depending on the number of candidates for the discussion test. We had group of 15 candidates, I was in the group of 61 -75. We had to wait for our chance to come for the Discussion Test. We were taken to a hall and made to sit on chairs in semi circle facing 3 officers. One of the officers then explained us about the procedure of PPDT. Our story sheets were given back to us and he asked us to have a look at our stories for 30 seconds and then narrate the story individually within one minute in preferably English and then have a discussion over it and come to a common story. Please narrate the story addressing the group and not the officers, be confident and maintain eye contact and narrate story with proper English in time.In my group some people wrote about celebration of a victory while some wrote on a boy drowning or group of friends saving a boy in water. I wrote a Story related to water but on disaster management. As the discussion started , it looked like a fish market, but I asked the group members to come to a consensus by taking up all important points from different stories. My story was soon taken up as a common story. We then had to wait for the result. The screening results were declared at 2:30 pm. A total of 39 candidates were screened in from 161. I was given fresh chest no.17. The screened out people were sent back to railway station after giving them TA. Screening is easy if you perform well in intelligence tests, speak good points in GD. You might see people getting screened in who did not even speak anything in GD, this is only because they performed exceptionally well in intelligence tests. We were then allotted rooms and taken to another hall for filling up of PIQ forms. Make sure you fill only correct information in the PIQ form. After filling forms, we were addressed by a GTO who briefed us about the rules of stay and other important points that we had to follow during our stay for the entire period. We were then served Dinner (The food at NSB is AMAZING). After a tiring day, we talked to each other for sometime and then went off to sleep early as we had the Psychological tests the next day.

Day-2 : Stage-2 Testing: Pysch Tests

The day started off really early as we had to report at 6:30 a.m. in the morning. We woke up at 4:30 am , and were ready in formals at 5:30 am. We had our bed tea and then went for breakfast at 5:45 am. After  enjoying the breakfast and sharing some light laughter with the new friends we moved in a line to the testing Hall. The Psych. Explained us about the tests we were to undergo. Pysch testing consists of four tests i.e. TAT ,WAT ,SRT & SD. An answer sheet containing 16 pages is given where first six pages are for TAT, next three for WAT, next four for SRT and rest for SD.

TAT or the Thematic Apperception Test is a test of the sub conscious mind. A total of 12 slides were shown to us one after another and we had to write stories on them much similar to what we did on day one . A picture flashes for 30 seconds and then four mins were given for us to write the story of about 100 words followed by the next picture. The last picture is blank and we had to write story of our own. Prepare a good blank story well in advance. Just after TAT comes WAT.

WAT or Word Association Test, 60 words are displayed one after the other  for 15 seconds each and we had to write a sentence on it within the time limit. The words are common and the test is easy. Try doing as many words as you can, I did 58.

After a short break next test is the SRT or the Situation Reaction Test where we have to write reactions to real life situations. A total of 60 SRTs are given time given is 30 mins. Try to do them quickly but make sure you write a complete and logical action (You are a normal human not a superman, so think and write a possible solution). Don’t worry even if you could do less SRTs, the thing which matters more is a good and effective reaction. I could do only 41 SRTs but properly.

The last test is the Self Description where we have to write half para each about:
1. Parents Opinion
2. Teachers Opinion
3. Friends Opinion
4. Your Opinion about yourself .
5. Qualities you want to improve/Aims.
Write whatever you feel like, all your good qualities and few of your bad qualities as no one is perfect.
three mins were given to write for each point i.e. total 15 mins.

Thus, the Psychological Testing is over. Some of the candidates have their interviews the same day while rest can visit the city, sleep, use the canteen or do whatever they feel like.

Day-3 : Stage-2 Testing:–GTO & Interview

Group Testing Officer spends the most time with the candidates. He looks the individual’s performance in a group. The day starts off early again. At NSB only 3 GTOs were there and so our entire GTO was scheduled to be held the next entire day and so we were called for interviews. The other three groups went for the GTO testing and one of the  groups had to finish off the same day as the GTO had to take our tests next day.

Personal Interview: My  interview was scheduled at 9:40 am. I waited for my turn as another candidate was being interviewed, after he finished off, I was called in after sometime. I entered the room confidently with a smile, stood besides the chair and wished the interviewing officer a very good morning. He asked me to have a seat and began some informal conversation about the pysch tests and my stay at NSB. He then gradually began asking me some serious questions. He asked about my city, why do I want to join the force, have I taken any coaching about my school etc. He then asked a series of questions in continuation i.e. the rapid fire questions. The questions were, Since you are from defence background how do you find the life in the defence forces, tell me about the Navy, also tell about the rank structure, what will be your duties after becoming an officer, coastal cities, naval commands etc. Questions in one go. I managed to answer almost all of them. He further asked about studies, girls, friends, and General knowledge questions. So please be attentive all the time, be smart while answering, always maintain an eye-contact while answering and sound confident. Don’t try to FAKE at any point and be natural, sit in a comfortable position and maintain good posture throughout. If you don’t know any answer then tell him you’ll find it out and tell it later(He might ask you the same question in conference). Don’t get nervous at any point. A good GK is a big positive, issues like Syria, Indo-China, US etc. are asked frequently.

During my interview another officer came in and began talking to my IO but I kept answering. This usually doesn’t happen. My interview lasted for 1 hour 10 minutes. The time flies by if you enjoy the interview. Its a great experience. Leave the Hall with a Smile. 😀

I discussed my interview with my friends and all others who had gone through the same shared their experiences. By then you have many friends and you enjoy your time. We went outside to a mall and enjoyed at McD, we came back in the evening had out dinner and went off to sleep.

Day-4 : Stage-2 Testing:–GTO

The final testing day started. We had our entire GTO testing to be done in a single day. We started of with a brief talk with the GTO, he then explained about the tests and we sat on chairs for GD. The GTO gave a choice of two topics and we had chosen the topic Naxalism. In the second GD, GTO gave the topic  Women Security in India. Everyone tries to jump into the discussion and put their views. Try to speak at the right time and put VALID points. I spoke 4 times and gave points about history of it, the measures being taken etc. Listen to what others are speaking and appreciate their points if you find them good and stay involved. Don’t show uneasiness. After GD, we had the GPE or the group planning exercise where we had to solve a few problems and write the solution on a sheet and then discuss to give common group solution. Being in a group, we have faced with problems and a layout of an areas was shown to us.

Points to keep in mind:

  1. Always save the Human first, then a disaster and then a small problem.
  2. Write fast and think logically.
  3. During discussion adopt a story that is the best or come to a common conclusion.
  4. One person who explains doesn’t get any extra preference.

Then comes the most interesting group activity i.e The Snake Race or the Group Obstacle Race. There are few obstacles which the group has to cross carrying a snake made out of jute or some other material. Listen to GTO’s instructions carefully. Do not fear, show JOSH, keep cheering, take initiative, help other members and do well. Our group did very well in it.

In PGT, four obstacles are to be crossed using material provided like the rope, fatta and balli. Give ideas and explain what you are trying to do to your group. Be with the group and use your brain. I was leading my group as I had ideas and was implementing them successfully. Also listen to other group members ideas and stay involved in tasks. We crossed all obstacles.

The next is HGT, which is similar to PGT, but only half the group has to do it and only one obstacle is there. This is easy. After these comes the Lecturette. You have to pick a card containing 4 topics, choose one topic, prepare for next 3 mins and then deliver a lecture for 3 mins. Choose a good topic on which you have sufficient knowledge. I spoke on the topic, The Future of one-day Cricket. Speak Loudly and confidently, give good and interesting points. Stand in a proper manner. Even if u get stuck, carry on with the topic and don’t be nervous and manage time properly.

Next comes the individual obstacles. I did all 10 in three minutes. If u have a good fitness level it helps a lot. Even if you don’t perform well in it, doesn’t matter much if  you have performed well in other tasks. Any normal person can do at least eight tasks. Many repeat the obstacles also. It is interesting but be careful about injuries.

Command Task can give you the hint about your performance in GTO. If you are given a tough obstacle, that means you have done well. You are the commander and instruct the two men you choose from group to help you cross obstacle. The GTO also talk for few minutes with you individually, answer smartly to him. I had a very complicated obstacle which I managed  to clear with a little hint from the GTO. I was also called by four of my group members as a subordinate to help. So I could judge that my obstacle was way tougher than theirs.

The last task of the GTO series is the Final GroupTask i.e. FGT where entire group has to cross only one obstacle using plank, rope and balli/log. It is very easy, GTO then debriefed us and wished  good luck for conference.

Day-5: Stage-2 Testing:–Conference

The main aim of the conference is to make you familiar with the officers where you see them in uniform and they see you. All the three assessors then discuss their results and the president of the conference board then decide whether to recommend you or not.

There are some 12 /15 officers sitting around a round table in a conference and then candidates enter one by one and are asked general questions about stay, facilities and suggestions if any. I entered with a smile, wished them, they asked me questions about my stay and if I made any friends.

Declaration of Results:

It was a very tensed moment, everyone was silent. The officer then comes and gives a brief speech and then announced the results. I could feel my heart in mouth, the moment he called up my chest no. 17, I was delighted. It was a great feeling, I exchanged hugs n handshakes from other recommended candidates and called up home and friends. I also cleared the medicals at INHS Sanjivani.

SSB is an experience of a lifetime, but you must have fire in you. It’s indeed a proud feeling being a boy of 17 and a half years. I will share my experience at Allahabad in the next testimonial. Sharing my Allahabad pic now  😀 Cheers !!
