Komal Pawar Recommended from 2 AFSB Mysore in AFCAT Entry

67

Hello friends, this was my first attempt for SSB and it was the most exciting, memorable, enjoyable moment of my life. Those five days have taught me many of the things, and their I came to know the real meaning of unity in diversity, which India has. In my family there was no one from military background, I never got any of the information about how to join this, but one of my college mate, Krishna, told me about AFCAT and even filled my form, I’ll always be thankful to him. later when I cleared my AFCAT written, my NCC sir, and other friends Nikhil,  Ranjit, and Dipak helped me with their guidelines for SSB preparation.

AFCAT+recommended+candidates+

According to me, the one who is desperately willing to join defence can easily crack SSB, only the thing is we have to analyze our self, don’t hide anything or tell lie about your achievements, the people there are experts, they can easily catch it!

Even I was unable to handle the command task, but didn’t hesitated to ask for help, and even I always kept encouraging my group candidates while performing the tasks. I think, may be this was my pulse point. Our group was the best one because we had co-ordination among us, and that is what required in defence. Even in GD we didn’t had quarrels, instead helped others, one who were unable to speak, to put forward their points. I thank Swathi for helping all of us by giving basic information and preparation tips.

Those five days were the best days of my life as I was bestowed with three very good friends, Shilpy, Amritha, and Ann.
Day 1 : We were escorted to AFSB from railway station, when we reached their, we were given chest numbers and started with our test aptitude, PPDT these were the screening tests, in which out of 180, 90 candidates were screened.
Later we  had Picture perception test (PPT),Word association test (WAT),Situation reaction test (SRT),Self description test (SDT) even PIQ’s were filled. It’s better to go prepared for this tests, at least have the overview of some solved examples. I was not knowing this but Ranjit (SSB recommended) told me this before.
Day 3 : Day 2 was a break for our group, on day 3 we had our personal interviews, my interview continued for 1 and half hour. The questions in the interview were general, about family, friends, colleagues, achievements, but were rapid fire type questions, we need to be keen listener and attentive, before replying I categorized all may answers, this had helped me in giving better performance . And one thing is to be remembered, the answers in the PIQ, SRT, SDT and the one you are giving in interview should match. The interviewer is very calm, he appreciates our answers.
The favorite question of my interview was “if I place Tr. Annie (favorite teacher) on 1 number, on number scale, which teacher will you place on number 7 ? why ?”, and I replied “Tr. Sumitra on number 7, because mam Annie taught me the values of life, and mam Sumitra encouraged me for my activities “.
Day 4 : Our GTO was conducted on 4th day, in that we had some Indoor and outdoor activities.
Indoor activities : In this activity the GTO showed us the map and explained the situation in the form of story, and we had to find the solution and perform all the tasks. later we were given time to write the solution individually and finally had to get the combined plan for the operation. Thanks to my group mates, they were very supportive, each and every one of us were able to explain our idea. and finally got to the conclusion.
Outdoor activities : Here we had Progressive group task, Half group task, Individual task, Command task, Final group task, and we were provided with helping material such as balli, rope, plank and a load, which we had to carry along with us while crossing the obstacles. There were some color codes to the obstacles.
  • White : Helping material as well as candidate can touch.
  • Yellow : Candidate can touch but helping material can’t.
  • Red : Neither Helping material nor candidates can touch.
Progressive group task : 5 hurdles were to be crossed with increasing difficulty, at first I
went numb, I was thinking GTO as easy think but everything went wrong here, I was not  getting even a single trick to cross the obstacle, but then I decided to just follow Swathi as she was good at logic.
Half group task : In this task we were divided into group of 5, even number in one group and odds in one, and again we were given a single hurdle, and Thank God! luckily Swathi was in my group. so crossed hurdle easily.
Command task : In this task every candidate is called and she has to overcome the  obstacle, and she can take two other candidates as her sub-ordinates, this was my  biggest tension, but then I again called Swathi and Shilpy as my sub-ordinates and as usual both helped me out.
Individual task : Now this was where I was perfect, in this task we had to pass over seven obstacles within 3 mins, they were high jump(1pt), ramp walking(2pts), monkey crawling(9pts), jumping through tyre(7pts), rope climbing(10pts), Burma Bridge(5pts), and walking on the wooden bamboo(4pts). I had crossed 5 out of 7 obstacles.
Final group task : This was also very easy task and we accomplished it within 5 mins.
Day 5 : On this day we had our conference, this was the best experience I’ve ever had, nearly 20 to 30 IAF officers were seating in a conference hall in a semicircular manner, and I was given a chair in the center, write in front of the president and one of the officers just next to president sir, started asking me questions. I quickly Identified the one and replied. the question was, “How was your stay at Mysore? what places have you visited in Mysore?”. It was just of 30 sec, but when my friends came up they told me that the time taken for discussion was much, I was getting tensed and was eagerly waiting for results and after an hour the DSO sir came with a result sheet in his hand, my heart started beating very fast, was nervous. He started telling the results of recommended one’s, chestno 1, (some 5 girls were in middle)…. chestno 22 and directly chestno 44, I crossed my fingers and started praying coz I was in despair, as no one was recommended from 30ties, but soon sir said chestno 46,47,48 and me, Shiply and Gargi were selected and chestno 44 was of Swathi. I was very happy as 4 candidates from our group were selected, and 20 candidates from our batch (M-AFSB/83).
later on DSO sir said this was the best batch there, coz many times the batches of girls get washed out totally, and only our batch had recommended 20 girls.
In the evening we were given a dozens of forms to fill and I was missing Amritha and Ann.
Day 6 : On this day we had our PABT test, for which 9 girls appeared and 6 were selected as pilots. I failed the exam but Shilpy has cleared.

Vijendra Singh Recommended from 19 SSB Allahabad in UES Entry

32

Hello friends..this was my first attempt for the ssb..and it was one of the most..adventorus ,memorable ,exciting and romantic trip of my life J. My ssb was on 10th of feb ,:) while coming from pune to Allahabad from pune patna express,I found out that train will drop me at cheoki station instead of Allahabad station bcoz of the excessive rush of people at Allahabad station due to mahakumbh . When I came out of cheoki station , I found out that auto and buses are not permitted to go to Allahabad station bcoz of the same reason of mahakumbh. So I was having 2 options.. 1. Leave the

ssb and come back in the absentee batch 2. Walk a distance of 13 kilometres. Since this was my first ssb,I was very excited and desperate to reach the MCO at Allahabad,so I chose the second option and walked to 13 km with a heavy bagpack on my shoulders and finally reached the MCO at 4 o clock in the morning.

SSB Allahabad UES Entry

So that’s how my ssb started..

Day 1 : screening day : the army bus dropped us to the ssb centre Allahabad, there we filled the TA
forms, got our chest numbers and went inside vikram batra testing hall for the screening round
initially two intelligence test were there. 50 simple questions and 30 min to solve them in each paper.
I did well in both of them 😀 J .well that was an easy test…after that it was time for PPDT (picture
perception and description test). In this test a hazy picture was shown to us in which a child was
playing a piyano, and we were supposed to write a story on this within 4 and a half minutes. In my
story , I showed a journey of a young boy from leaning to play the piyano to winning the national level
competition “INDIA’S GOT TALENT”.

Then we were divided into group of 15 people in each group and went to the GD room for the group
discussion. Initially each n every person narrated his story one by one. I narrated my story well and
fluently J.since I was the last candidate to narrate in my group,as soon as my narration ended, the
group discussion started . our group discussion was awesome. Even the gto officer and the psychologist
appreciated our group. I can still remember the words of that GTO officer “boys, this is one of the most
sensible and decent group discussion I have ever seen in this GD room.. till date”.

And when the screening result came,we all were got totally amazed, because out of 15 people from our
group 11 people got screened in,including me J . that moment was really amazing.

Then we got our new chest numbers, my new chest number was 11.and then we filled the PIQ forms.

This is how the day 1 ended and we went to 19ssb accommodation.

DAY2: PSYCHOLOGY TEST: the first psychology test was TAT. Well it was too easy, 11 pictures and a blank slide were shown and I was easily able to write the story based on them within the time limit.

Then was the word association test in which I made a mistake…I skipped two words in between because of which the serial numbers of the sentence from no.7 to no. 20 went wrong .when I realized about that, I immediately corrected it,but in the meanwhile ,I skipped 5 more words.but after word number 20..rest of the serial numbers were in correct order as the answer sheet for word no.21 to 40 was starting from a new page..aah ..thank goodnesss. So finally I was able to attempt 50 words out of 60.

Then third was the SITUATION REACTION TEST. In this ,out of 60 I attempted 42.

And after that the last test was self description test which was very easy.

Then the test was over by 4 oclock and we were free and chest number 1to 9 were being called for the
interview, my interview was on next day as I was chest no.11, so me and few more people went to to
OLIVE GREEN cafeteria and had awesome bakarbaaazi among the group along with coffee and chips.

Then we came back to the staying room and I listened to my favourite Enrique songs for few hours and
then went to sleep ,as we had to wake up early tomorrow morning for the GTO task.

DAY3: day 3 started with the GTO tasks..starting with GD ..the group discussion was a bit of a fish
market..but some how I managed to politely put up my points 3-4 times . but then came the group
planning exercise in which I suckeddd because of the person sitting beside me.we were supposed to sit
in proper semi circle, but person sitting beside me pulled his chair a little bit in front of me due to which
I got hinderd from the group and he kept on shouting in the entire group planning exercise . that’s why
each and every time I had to ask him politely to calm down and listen to my views ,and some how I
managed to speak two times in the whole group planning exercise.. 🙁

Then we had the progressive group task, half group tasks in which I gave workable ideas to overcome
the hurdles. Then was the group obstacle race which was a real fun . everyone running along with the
snake and shouting their warcrys, our warcry was “CHAKKKKKKKK DE INDIAAAAAAAAA”and the most amazing thing WAS that my group won that race :).then last was the lecturette in which all u have to do is to speak logical and confidence like an officer. That was all in the name of GTO tasks for that day.

After that chest number 10 and 11 (me)was called for the interview. Every one was nervous regarding
their interview but I was chill and cool because I already knew that he is gonna focus on my acadamics
and family back ground, as I belong from the army back ground and my academic marks are totally
average. I am persuing mechanical engineering from ARMY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PUNE and my aggregate till 6th semester is 56.93 and I had 1 backlog.

I was going to be interviewed by the president of 19 ssb board. Finally my turn came, and when I enterd
the room, all I did there was that I spoke the truth nourished with confidence….thats ittttt…and my guess was absolutely correct, my entire interview revolved around my weakness, failures, academics and family back ground and some technical questions which I answered him very easily. And in the end my personal interview went awesome. So I was really happy after my interview was over, and this happiness got multiplied by 100 when I came to know that my hot favorite actress deepika’s movie RACE 2 was being shown in the vikram batra testing hall. Though the movie was yukkkk.. but I loved the presence and appearance of deepika in the movie .

DAY 4: day 4 started with the individual obstacles . I did all the obstacles and also repeated the
commando walk. So over all I did 11 obstacles .that was amazingggg.

After that was the command task, 4 times I was called as a subordinate by my group mates .and when
my turn came, initially I was doing good, but then the GTO officers started making the situations tougher and tougher for me and in the end he scolded me “u don’t have the ability to complete the task in the given time limit…u should know how to give commands to your subordinates to make the work fast and effective.” Then the thought came in my mind “ gaya beta tu to….ab to tu kaise bhi recommend nhi ho rha.”

Then was the final group task which was just a formality and was over within 10 minutes.

So in this way our entire ssb test was over and we were eagerly waiting for the result after the
conference in tomorrow morning.

Day 5 : conference day : when I went inside the room , I saw all the officers sitting in proper uniform and the president who interviewed me was sitting in the middle. He asked me abt my stay, how well did I performed in all three tests i.e psychology, PI and GTO. ,where do I rank my self in my group, and then he asked me wether I faced any kind of difficulty in any test. Then I told him about the problem which I faced in word association test. So he putted 10 words in front of me and asked me to make sentences on them. I easily made the sentences .and then he asked “any suggestions you would like to give??”, I said “no sirrr” then he said thank you and I left the room.

After 15 minutes , the psychologist came out and announced the result. The moment he said chest no.
11, I was like “ohhhhh yeahhhhh…I made itttttttttt”. And friends if u notice the date on which I got
recommended…

it was 14th feb..that is THE VALENTINE DAY ..waaavvvvvviiiiiiiiiiiiiii….

🙂 🙂 so I would like to dedicate my recommendation for the army to my “sweetheart cutie pie …my first crush..mera sab kuchh” as a valentine gift!!!! PS : anything for herrrrr!!!!..recommendation to bahot chhoti cheez hai…!!!!!  Well friends..in the end I would like to say..if u are going for ssb..go prepared.and face the interview and tasks with confidence… just like an officer… 🙂

Thematic Apperception Test TAT Examples SSB Interview

19
thematic-apperception-test-tat

Thematic Apperception Test is the second objective test employed by the SSBs to test the personality of the candidate. It is also a test of the candidate’s imagination. If an outline or hazy and vague picture is shown to a candidate, he will interpret it according to his imagination. These pictures, therefore, stimulate the thought processes of the candidate and he is able to weave around it a story. It is an attempt to let the candidate have flights of imagination. It is a method of exploring matter from a person’s subconscious mind by stimulating his fantasy and interpreting it. The candidate is encouraged to come out with ideas and inner hidden or latent material which will not be available to us normally.

Why Thematic Apperception Test?

These pictures originally employed for this purpose were very vague. There was a great play of projection or inner subconsciousness in the interpretation of these T.A.T pictures  Pictures with greater details and needing less play of projection and imagination were introduced by two psychologists, Murray and Margon, who used these in 1903 and the same are generally in use in India.   In TAT, the picture used by the SSBs are on the model of Murray’s pictures, but they are almost clear and not hazy. A set of 12 pictures is generally used including one blank slide. A slide of each picture is shown on a screen with the help of a magic lantern for half a minute and the candidates are required to write a story based on the picture in a period of four minutes in the particular space provided on the answer sheet. This test is based on the theory that in the construction or stories around ambiguous pictures, the candidate organizes material from his own personal experiences, partly as a result of the stimulus that he receives i.e. what he finds in the picture and partly his associations with such stimuli recalled from his past experiences.

Characteristics of the Story

The candidates must remember that there are certain essential elements or components of a well-constructed story. These are:

  • The Hero: Each story must have a hero or the chief character with whom the writer identifies himself. The hero should exhibit qualities which an officer of the Armed Forces should possess. He should act and behave like a normal human being and not like a supernatural being.
  • Other characters who help the hero in the execution of the task undertaken by him.
  • Situation in the Story:
    • What it is ?
    • How it came into being or what events led up to it?
    • What will be the outcome or conclusion?
  • The them or plot:
    • It is an attempt by the hero, assisted by other characters to organize the story by pooling all the resources at this disposal in order to successfully solve the problem by him.
    • The plot should be interesting and end successfully.
    • It should be self-evident. The reader must not remain in doubt about it or keep on guessing it.

Sample Pictures in TAT:

Three sample TAT pictures are given below, you can post your story in the comment box below and also read other’s stories to get an idea of TAT.

AFCAT 2013 Cut Off Marks

afcat 2013 cut off marks

AFCAT 01/2013 written exam was conducted by India Air-Force on 24 Feb 2013, AFCAT 2013 changed few things this time and answers for AFCAT 2013 and AFCAT 2013 cut off will discussed here. The standard of AFCAT written test has improved considerably since last few exams. Cut off marks for AFCAT 2012 was 143 out of 300, lets see what will be the cut off AFCAT 2013.

Again India Air force has raised the standard of AFCAT with the following:

  1. Introducing OMR sheet in AFCAT: Most of you are surprised to see the OMR sheet this time, OMR sheet will certainly helps in keeping the evaluation clean and fair. Cancellation and discrepancy in AFCAT 2 2012 result is one more reason to introduce OMR sheet in AFCAT this time.
  2. Difficulty Level of AFCAT 2013 written: Most of you if not all find the difficulty level increasing with AFCAT, if you compare the first AFCAT 2011 and AFCAT 2013, you will find the change in the pattern of questions and their difficulty level. AFCAT 2013 wasn’t easy this time and you might  have faced some questions of new pattern, verbal and non verbal sections wasn’t easy, paper was lengthy specially with the Maths. Military turpitude was easy this time. Overall, it was good for one who has prepared for it.
  3. No change of answers: Unlike last time, this time you can’t change the answers once marked. This is because of use of OMR sheet which doesn’t allow you to do so. This could be a disadvantage for candidates but little alertness can avoid this issue.
If we consider the difficulty level of questions this time, in 01/2013 AFCAT , cut off marks might fall near 140- 155, or 55-60 correct questions might be a safer side for you, guessing answers and negative marking scheme can do the damage but hope you have avoided the more of guessing in questions and kept the negative marking in mind.

But rest depends on the IAF, how much intake they want from this AFCAT 2013, you can check the cut off marks of AFCAT 2012 to get an idea.
