Progressive Group Task (PGT) Rules

0
PGT rules
This is the first outdoor task in the GTO series. In this task certain obstacles are given and you have to progress from one obstacle to another as a group. In this task there 3-4 obstacles which a group has to cross following certain rules and carrying a load with them.

Progressive Group Task (PGT) Procedure

Generally after explaining the whole procedure the GTO will ask the group that how much time they will need to complete the task and then he gives about 40-45 minutes. The obstacles are nothing but a certain area is marked by a start line and a finish line and the ground between these two lines is considered as out of bound area since you have to cross this out of bound area which is about 10-15 feet. Since you have to cover this distance without stepping on ground thus it becomes an obstacle but you are provided with some helping material to facilitate the crossing also some structures are placed in between to facilitate bridging.

Progressive Group Task (PGT) Rules

These helping material can be a wooden plank (5-6 feet long), balli, rope and also you have to carry the load with you which is in form of a drum or barrel. You are also expected to follow certain rules which are as follows:
  • Group Rule: This rule implies that all the members of a group must have crossed an obstacle before moving to the next one. Since in this exercise candidates can move one by one only there will be some who cross first and others who cross late. Therefore you must make sure that all of you have crossed. Secondly by group here we mean the whole group, the living and the non-living ones both, because your group consists of all the members hence don’t forget to take the helping material as well.
  • Distance Rule: This rule says that no member of the group can jump directly more than a distance of 3-4 feet. Hence the distance of more than 3-4 feet must be bridged and not jumped. Thus if you see that the distance between the start line and the first structure to be of 5 feet you must not jump even if you are capable of doing so, you must bridge the distance between it.
  • Color Rule: This rule implies that the structures placed in the out of bound area if it is painted white, is inbound for candidates and the helping material & the load as well. This means it can be touched by the three. If it is painted Red then it is out of bound for all the three i.e. nobody can touch it neither the group nor the helping material or the load. If it is painted blue then it can be touched or is inbound for the living members of the group i.e. candidates and out of bound i.e. can’t be touched by the non-living members i.e. the helping material and the load.
  • Rule of Rigidity: This rule says that no two rigid materials can be tied together for making an extension. Since rigid materials are normally the ballis and planks hence this rule means you can’t tie them together. However you can keep one on top of another and also can tie them to the structure.

You must keep these rules in mind to do the PGT Progressive Group Task efficiently.

Tips On Tackling Progressive Group Task

Progressive Group Task PGT

When the GTO gives you direction for the PGT Progressive Group Task, he takes the whole group from start line of first obstacle to the finish line of the end one. As soon as he says that okay now you may start the task then the competition begins. Here are a few tips on how to successfully tackle PGT.

ssbinterviewbook
  1. Run to the start line where the helping materials are placed as soon as the GTO says that you may start. Don’t walk like a snail show some sense of urgency.
  2. When you’ll run it’ll be an advantage for you only because then you’ll be able to catch hold of any of the helping material.
  3. You must take the plank or balli or the rope in your hand and start the work immediately.
  4. Please do not take the load and try to get your possession on the helping materials because then only you’ll be able to start the work.
  5. While you are making your bridge you must ask other group members to help you and not try to do it on your own.
  6. If someone else has taken the lead and started making the bridge then you must support them by your ideas and your physical help.
  7. Do not stand and watch the other members doing it, you have to be involved and look involved.
  8. Volunteer to cross the bridge first and encourage others to cross it as well. If anybody is hesitating then you must motivate them and help them in crossing.
  9. While working and encouraging others you must be loud enough because your voice must reach the GTO at least and he’ll think that you are involved.
  10. You must look working the entire time try not to remain idle for a single second.
  11. When the GTO is giving the directions he might ask you that okay now I’ll tell you the rules for PGT, does anybody knows the rule? Then please do not act over smart and say ‘Yes’, because this is the first Outdoor task you are blank on the rules as of now.
  12. Do not ask the GTO silly questions like how much distance is 3-4 feet, at your age you are expected to have that much sense of distance.
  13. The GTO will even ask your group that how much time you’ll need to complete the task, do not say 30 minute or 35 minute, tell 1 hour he’ll bargain for 40-45 minute.
  14. Do not shout on your team members and do not throw the helping material etc.
  15. Do not break the rules and if you are breaking any you have infinite chance to correct it, there is no penalty hence if you happen to break a rule then you must repeat the task again. Honesty is what is expected from you.
  16. Wait till all the members have crossed.
  17. Do not look at the GTO all the time.
  18. DO not give up easily, keep on motivating your team members and encouraging them to perform.

Individual Obstacles For Women

1

Here there will be obstacles placed and a candidate is required to complete them in a given period of time individually. The level of individual obstacles for women is slightly lower than that given for men. Men’s are given three minutes for 10 obstacles roughly and women are required to complete 6 obstacles in a time of 4 minutes, this is because level of energy and stamina in men and women are different. You can repeat an obstacle after you complete all. Each obstacle is associated with points ranging from 1 to 10, most difficult one with maximum number of points (10).

Basically your self-confidence, physical fitness, stamina, courage, determination and speed of decisions are some major points amongst others to be checked. Hence you have to do it will full zeal and stamina. Generally the obstacles are placed one after the another in such a way that you can start with an obstacle you like and keep on attempting others and finally come back to the first one where you started.
Here is a list of some of the obstacles popularly given by SSB’s, you can get any six of them or similar kinds to do.
  1. Going over a balance beam called as single ramp.
  2. Long jump across a ditch of about 4-6 feet (generally covered with a barbed wire).
  3. Monkey crawling.
  4. Climbing a wall.
  5. Passing through a tire.
  6. Rope climbing.
  7. Tarzan Swing or Tarzan jump
  8. Balance walking over a zigzag beam.
  9. Walking over parallel ropes (Burma Bridge).
  10. Screen Jump (come running climb on the plank jump over the screen or red cloth without touching the screen).
  11. Commando walk.
  12. Tiger’s leap.

Individual Obstacles For Women
Individual Obstacles For Women

Tips for tackling Individual Obstacles

  1. Practice running & do some exercise before appearing for SSB.
  2. When the GTO is explaining listen very carefully and make a mental note of what you have to do or a plan of action.
  3. If you fail to tackle an obstacle in first attempt try it again after finishing other ones.
  4. Choose the correct sequence.
  5. Do not merely walk on the ground, run from one obstacle to other.
  6. Do not break rules or touch red portions.
  7. Remain composed while attempting high rise obstacles or one’s with jumping.
  8. Do not look at others or at the GTO while tackling obstacles concentrate and do your thing.
  9. Do not exceed your time.
  10. Do not give up in the middle.
You can tackle these obstacles easily if you are physically fit. Since balancing requires concentration hence you must attempt it in the beginning (this is my personal opinion however you can attempt in a way you like). Since Individual Obstacles are scoring thing hence you must try to put in your best efforts because these marks count in the final merit list. Don’t forget to test your shoes (sport shoes) which you have to wear in this task because you must be accustomed and habitual to the shoes in which you are going to run. The same applies to the dress you have to wear in this task.
Best of Luck Ladies:)
