7 Common SSB Interview Questions Asked By the Interviewing Officer

9
common ssb interview questions and answer

Interview is a very important part of your SSB. Your performance in interview mostly is responsible whether you make it or not. IO has different ways of testing whether the person is fit enough for being an officer or not and some questions he asks are his pet yet they confuse the candidates and they generally go with the flow and answer something which dismisses their chances of selection. Here are a few such SSB Interview questions along with their suggested answer.

Q) Why do you want to join Defense Forces?

A) Now you may tell the real reason because definitely a defense aspirant has a solid reason behind joining the defense forces, that reason may be patriotism, love for aero planes, ships, guns, craze for uniform, wish for an adventurous life or any other. Now one thing to be noted here is that boys, except for those giving interview for an entry after 10+2, should not say things like ‘Sir it was my childhood dream’ or ‘I always wanted to do this only’, otherwise IO might ask you that dude where were you after class 12th?

Q) What if you do not get recommended this time?

A) You have to sweetly and simply say that ‘Sir I’ll try next time again’. Now he may counter you by saying that if you do not make into defense then what? Here you have to show your chipku-pana for defense, you have to say that sir I’ll work very hard and make it, or I have not thought anything as yet except defense.

spot_img

Q) Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?(And for the obvious answer No-Why you do not have)

A) Well this is your call guys & girls but if you say yes for this then be ready for a lot of counter questions and more counter questions IO asks regarding your personal life more you are likely to reveal yourself and I believe down the line we are not perfect. So to avoid any mishap simply say NO, if he asks why then you can say that I have not yet felt anything like this for anybody yet.

Q) What is your belief of marriage? (Love/Arranged)

A) Please don’t act smart (actually foolish) by giving a kiddish reply that ‘I don’t believe in marriage’ or ‘I have not yet thought about it’. IO expects you to be grown up at this age (Graduation people) . You can say that you believe in both kinds of marriages but the person you are getting married to should be acceptable to everybody in your family. Hence in case of Love marriage your parents should agree to that guy/girl & in case of arrange marriage you should agree.

Q) Do you drink/booze?

A)  Aha now that’s a catchy one, for boys especially if you are going for UES or anything above college level then IO knows that most of you would have done at least once. So say the truth, if you do then tell that yes sir I have done it once or twice and if you don’t then tell I don’t. For girls, well you can say the truth as well there is no discrimination. Whatever you say be ready for counter questions if you are saying yes or sometimes etc. Saying a NO saves you of unnecessary questions 😉

spot_img

Q) Why did you fail in previous SSB attempt (for repeaters)?

A)  Tell the truth what you feel, don’t blame the SSB that I did good and they didn’t take me or I don’t know, this gives a negative impression about you. You can say that I was not prepared well Sir in (say a particular thing) like psychological part. You can add up by saying that but Sir I have prepared well this time.

Q) Did you do any special preparation for SSB?

A) Of course you did! So tell him that yes sir I prepared for SSB from various sources like reading books on current affairs, reading newspapers, taking tips from websites especially dedicated for SSB like SSBCrack 😉

In short you have to make him feel that you have worked very hard for your SSB.

Bottom-line:

You have to keep in mind that IO sitting in front of you is much more smarter than you perhaps that is why he sitting there. Also IO is fairly senior officer who has got kids of almost of your age, he knows what and how you think! You have got to be cautious about being over friendly with the IO, they are trained to smile and be polite so that you may speak as much as you can. But remember he is not your friend and thus you don’t have to treat him like that, at the end of the day he is responsible whether you make it or not, hence you have to very formal, polite and control your tongue

GTO Task in SSB Interview

GTO tasks in SSB Interview

GTO Task in SSB Interview is the second set of tasks which is conducted after the psychological tests. The GTO Tasks are designed to test the sociability speaking skills of a candidate. An officer has to perform his duties along with his colleagues  and hence this task is truly the most important test of the entire ssb procedure.

GTO Task in SSB Interview

The Group discussion and Progressive group task is used by the GTO to reach into a picture of the personalities of candidates and other tasks like Half Group task, Individual obstacles, Inter Group Obstacle Race , Group Lecturette are designed to confirm the earlier findings of the GTO and also to change the assumption about a Candidate.GTO Task in SSB Interview

Group Discussion

This is the first task of the GTO task in ssb interview and this test is designed to check the general speaking skills of a candidate and as rightly said “The first impression is the best impression”, the performance of a candidate in the GD is the first impression that the GTO forms of a candidate. He later evaluates each and every candidate in the other tasks .
In GD, there is usually two rounds of discussion. In the first round, the GTO announces three sets of topics and the candidates can select any one from among them. You will be amazed to find that the first set of topics are really simple and each and every person can take part in it. But the second round topic is quite difficult and a well informed candidate only can take a lead in the discussion. The GD generally lasts for 30 minutes.

Group Lecturette

This is one of the most important task of the GTO task in ssb interview. The candidates are made to sit in a circle and every candidate are given a topic and he has to speak on it. The time allotted is three minutes.

Progressive Group Task

The first outdoor task in GTO task in ssb interview. PGT is about set of obstacles in ground in a specified area in that you and your team members should cross each obstacle defined by set of rules.  Also while crossing those obstacles we should carry a load.  To cross those obstacles, some helping materials are given by the G.T.O.  i.e. Balli (wooden log), Plank, and rope to tie these. The difficulty of the task increases from one obstacle to another in a progressive manner.  So it is named as Progressive Group Task.

H.G.T. – Half Group Task

HGT is similar to PGT, but the difference is that the group is divided into two sets.  i.e. If your group contains totally 10 persons, then it is divided into 5 of two groups.  Like this the GTO will see the performance of the candidates in close. The rules are same for this like PGT.

C.T. – Command Task

The Command Task is held before the F.G.T.  The aim of this task is to find the commanding capability of the candidate.  The candidates are allowed to choose two members from the group.  The candidate should have to cross an obstacle with the allotted men and the resources available within allotted time.

F.G.T. – Final Group Task

The final task of SSB  GTO outdoor tasks. The entire group is participated in this task and there is only one obstacle.

Rules for PGT, HGT, CT, and FGT

The obstacles are painted in three colors namely
  • White
  • Black
  • Red
Each one describes one rule.
White: – Both the candidate and the helping materials can touch the obstacle at this region.
Black: – Only the candidate can touch the obstacle in this region and not the helping materials.
Red: – Both the candidate and helping material should not touch the obstacles.

How To Be A Hero Of Your SSB Interview Group

3
ssb interview group

You must have heard people saying that SSB is more of a group thing than an individual thing. Well this is neither true to 100% and nor even false to some extent. What I am trying to say is that in SSB your group and how well you Gel with your group counts. However your group is not totally responsible for your success or failure but it does matters. The simple reason for this is that most of the tasks given to you in SSB are group oriented in fact the GTO series tasks which are the maximum point gainers consist of maximum group tasks(GD’s, GPE, PGT, HGT, GOR, Command task etc.)

Hence it is very important for you to make a good impression on your group mates and make the best of friendships with them. Here are a few tips on how you can cast a good impression on your group and take everybody in confidence.
  1. Stop the “I don’t know anything” pretension: Some of us think that if we try to pretend as if we know nothing about the SSB and how things are done in SSB others will think that we are innocent and take us lightly. Trust me I have seen candidates behaving that way. It casts a negative impression on your mates. Avoid it.
  2. Stop the “I know everything” showoff: Everybody knows that if you are in SSB you ought to be intelligent and smart but don’t forget that so are they. Your mates are not fools so stop answering every question that is being asked in your group. If person ‘x’ is asking to person ‘y’ then tell me where do you stand to answer the question? Stop playing the crow in between who tries to catch the ball every time it is thrown.
  3. Pulling other person’s leg will make you fall eventually: If you find pulling legs and talking sarcasm cool then surely your group mates will like you to remain aloof and retain your coolness alone. Hence pulling leg of a weak member or talking sarcasm on anybody is not an officer’s material.
  4. Sharing is good but only to an extent: Asking for your group mate’s towel, cream, shampoo etc. etc. will certainly make you look like a needy but not an officer.
  5. Play polo: Here I don’t mean the horse polo, I simply mean the mint, and it can do wonders! While you are sitting in the bus or waiting for the PPDT you can easily slide or pass a polo to your group mates, trust me it is a good friendship starter! So the next time you go for your SSB keep this wonder mint with you in a good stock.
  6. Pamper them: While you go for an outing in the city, pamper them and give a treat to them. A few samosa’s and a bottle of cold drink will cost nothing if you compare it with you pay-band as an officer 😉
  7. Be real: Don’t be a fake person, be real show your real self you are unique so don’t try to copy anybody.
  8. Lies are a big no-no: If you tell them that you are topper of your college and you lack the basic General knowledge also then its worthless to mention the impression they’ll have of you. Hence please don’t lie about anything, lying only makes you conscious.
How To Be A Hero Of Your SSB Interview Group
The time you spend in an SSB is going to be golden time of your life. You will never forget the things you did here and the friends you made hence enjoy it and make the best of it. SSB is like a game where you can win only by remaining truthful and honest. I have seen deserving candidates not being selected just because of a bad and quarrelsome group. Candidates shouting in GD’s and fighting over ballis and ropes in PGT can never make it through. Remember you are in SSB to become an Officer so behave like one!

Command Task and How To Tackle It

1

The Command Task is a pivotal element of the Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks in the selection process for defense forces, especially noted in the Services Selection Board (SSB) assessments.

Unlike other group tasks that operate on a leaderless basis, the Command Task places you squarely in the role of a commander, testing not just your leadership skills but also your ability to strategize, communicate effectively, and execute a plan under pressure.

Here’s an in-depth look at the nuances of the Command Task and strategic tips on how to navigate it successfully.

image 11

Understanding the Command Task

The Command Task stands out as a critical assessment tool for GTOs to evaluate a candidate’s leadership potential, decision-making capability, and the ability to command respect and cooperation from peers.

In this task, candidates are assigned a physical challenge that they must overcome within a set timeframe, using specific resources and the assistance of chosen subordinates from their group.

ssb command task

The nature of the task assigned varies based on the candidate’s previous performance in GTO tasks. High performers can expect more challenging tasks, while those who have struggled may be assigned simpler tasks. This differentiation is designed to assess candidates’ abilities to handle tasks commensurate with their perceived capabilities.

Preparation and Strategy

Success in the Command Task hinges on a candidate’s mental agility, leadership demeanor, and tactical planning. Here are several tips to help candidates prepare and excel:

  1. Active Listening and Clarification: Pay close attention to the GTO’s instructions and clarify any doubts immediately. Understanding the task fully before beginning is crucial for formulating an effective strategy.
  2. Strategic Planning: Take a moment to assess the task, resources available, and potential challenges. Formulate a broad strategy that is flexible yet goal-oriented. Logical thinking and common sense are your best allies in developing a viable plan.
  3. Selection of Subordinates: Choose your subordinates wisely, based on your understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. This decision is critical, as these individuals will play a significant role in the execution of your plan.
  4. Clear Communication: Once your plan is in place, explain it clearly to your subordinates. Ensure they understand their roles and the overall strategy to foster a cooperative and motivated team environment.
  5. Adaptability: Be prepared to modify your plan if circumstances change or if it becomes apparent that your initial approach is not working. Flexibility and the ability to think on your feet are essential qualities of a good leader.
  6. Encouragement and Respect: Treat your subordinates with respect and encourage them throughout the task. A positive and respectful leadership style will motivate your team to perform to the best of their abilities.
  7. Stay Calm and Positive: Maintain your composure, even if the task becomes more challenging. A calm and optimistic demeanor will help you think clearly and maintain the confidence of your team.
  8. Cooperation as a Helper: When it’s not your turn to lead, be a cooperative and supportive subordinate. This not only aids the current commander but also demonstrates your team spirit and loyalty.

Group Discussion During GTO
  1. Team Player
    • It is essential for managers to be team players.
    • The reason: Managers always work in teams.
    • At the beginning of his(manager) career, a manager works as a team member. And, later, as a team leader.
    • Management aspirants who lack team skills cannot be good managers.
  2. Reasoning Ability
    • Reasoning ability plays an important role while expressing your opinions or ideas at a GD.
    • For example, on India’s growth and its effect’s:
    • Any Answer for this should be based on reasons, not assumptions.
  3. Leadership
    • There are three types of situations that can arise in a GD
    • GD where participants are unable to establish a proper rapport and do not speak much.
    • A GD where participants get emotionally charged and the GD gets chaotic.
    • A GD where participants discuss the topic assertively by touching on all its nuances and try to reach the objective.
    • Here, a leader would be someone who facilitates the third situation at a GD.
    • A leader would have the following qualities:
      • S/he shows direction to the group whenever group moves away from the topic.
      • S/he coordinates the effort of the different team members in the GD.
      • S/he contributes to the GD at regular intervals with valuable insights.
      • S/he also inspires and motivates team members to express their views.
      • Caution: Being a mere coordinator in a GD does not help, because it is a secondary role.
      • Contribute to the GD with your ideas and opinions, but also try and steer the conversation towards a goal.
  4. Flexibility
    • You must be open to other ideas as well as to the evaluation of your ideas: That is what flexibility is all about.
    • But first, remember: Never ever start your GD with a stand or a conclusion.
    • Say the topic of a GD is, ‘Should India Ban night work for Women at night hours?’
    • Some participants tend to get emotionally attached to the topic and take a stand either in favor or against the topic, i.e. ‘Yes, India should’, or, ‘No, India should not’.
    • By taking a stand, you have already given your decision without discussing the topic at hand or listening to the views of your team members.
    • Also, if you encounter an opposition with a very strong point at the 11th hour, you end up in a typical catch-22 situation:
      • If you change your stand, you are seen as a fickle-minded or a whimsical person.
      • If you do not change your stand, you are seen as an inflexible, stubborn and obstinate person.
  5. Assertiveness
    • You must put forth your point to the group in a very emphatic, positive and confident manner.
    • Participants often confuse assertiveness with aggressiveness.
    • Aggressiveness is all about forcing your point on the other person, and can be a threat to the group. An aggressive person can also demonstrate negative body language, whereas an assertive person displays positive body language.
  6. Initiative
    • A general trend among students is to start a GD and get the initial kitty of points earmarked for the initiator.
    • But that is a high risk-high return strategy.
    • Initiate a GD only if you are well versed with the topic. If you start and fail to contribute at regular intervals, it gives the impression that you started the GD just for the sake of the initial points.
    • Also, if you fumble, stammer or misquote facts, it may work against you.
    • Remember: You never ever get a second chance to create a first impression.
  7. Creativity/ Out of the box thinking
    • An idea or a perspective which opens new horizons for discussion on the GD topic is always highly appreciated.
    • When you put across a new idea convincingly, such that it is discussed at length by the group, it can only be positive.
    • You will find yourself in the good books of the examiner.
  8. Inspiring ability
    • A good group discussion should incorporate views of all the team members.
    • If some team members want to express their ideas but are not getting the opportunity to do so, giving them an opportunity to express their ideas or opinions will be seen as a positive trait.
    • Caution: If a participant is not willing to speak, you need not necessarily go out of the way to ask him to express his views. This may insult him and hamper the flow of the GD.
  9. Listening
    • Always try and strike a proper balance between expressing your ideas and imbibing ideas.
  10. Awareness
    • You must be well versed with both the micro and macro environment.
    • Your awareness about your environment helps a lot in your GD content, which carries maximum weight-age.
