Even though one cannot be trained for Pilot Aptitude Battery Test, it could be helpful to know the procedure of the test so that a candidate may prepare himself mentally for the test and may approach the test with full confidence.

The PABT test includes:
  • Written test based on instrument reading.
  • Light control test based on sensory motor apparatus.
  • Drum test to check control of velocity.
Lets first discuss what is PABT or Pilot Aptitude Battery Test is:

Instrument Reading Test

Aircrafts have several instruments which indicate several parameters which the pilot has to monitor. This test aim’s at checking whether the candidate can read the instrument or not, and thereby make some mental calculations. The instruments used are:
  • Magnetic Compass: Also known as Gyroscope, this gauge indicates the direction of the flight. It has a suspended needle which always point towards the true North. With respect to the true North, one has to read the direction in which the aircraft is flying.
  • Air Speed Indicator: This instrument provides the speed of the air is a vital parameter for flying operations. This instrument provides the indicated air speed that is required to be corrected for certain instruments and positional errors to arrive at True Air Speed in kilometers or miles.
  • Altimeter: This instrument provides the height at which the aircraft is flying. This instrument has three needles, of which the smallest indicates height in multiples of 10,000, the middle one indicates height in multiples of 1000 and the largest one indicates height in multiples of 100. The reading is either in feet or yard.
  • Artificial Horizon: This instrument provides a reference in terms of horizon for indicating climb, descent, right turn and left turn of the aircraft.
  • Turn Indicator: This instrument indicates the turn on either sides of the aircraft. In turning left, the black ball remains in the middle and the white needle moves to right and when turning right, he white needle shifts to the left.
  • Climb and Descent Indicator: This instrument indicates the position of the aircraft I terms of climbing or descending. When the aircraft is climbing, the needle moves upwards and vice-versa.

Light Control Test

In this test, the candidate is made to sit in front of a CRT monitor. The chartered path of the flight is defined in that and the candidate is asked to fly along the chartered path by keeping the light representing the aircraft on the monitor, on the chartered path. The instrument stimulates real time situations like loss of height, tilting, etc. and the candidate is expected to control using the joystick, foot pedals and light lever which are similar to actual controls on an aircraft.

Drum Test

This is another test to check the control skills of the candidate. In this, there is a drum of about eight feet length and one feet diameter. There are lines marked on the surface of the drum with some holes on each line. The candidate is given a knob to control that is very sensitive. The drum is rotated and the candidate is expected to align the knob with the lines on the drum as it rotates. Since, the knob is very sensitive, it is not easy to do so. This aptitude is required to maintain the flight under harsh weather conditions when the velocity of the wind disturbs the flight trajectory.

India Successfully Test Fired Pinaka Rockets

Pinaka was test fired successfully from the range of Chandipur-on-sea on 19th december 2013. Pinaka is multiple barrel rocket launcher produced by defence research and development organization (DRDO) for the Indian army. Pinaka rockets played an important role in the kargil war to neutralize the enemy’s power on tiger hill.

Development of Pinaka started in 1986 as the replacement of BM-21 grad1 launchers and the tests were started from 1995.These tests are as a result of the recent development in the rocket system as it has been upgraded to second generation mark II launchers. The older version has a range of 40 km and the latest version now has the strike power of beyond 55km. Pinaka mark-ii will undergo some more tests before been inducted into the army. Pinaka battery consists of: six launcher vehicles, each with 12 rockets; six loader-cum-replenishment vehicles; three replenishment vehicles; two Command Post vehicles (one stand by) with a Fire Control computer, and the DIGICORA MET radar.

India Successfully Test Fired Pinaka Rockets
The unguided rocket system has the capacity to neutralize large areas with rapid salvos. Pinaka system can fire a salvo of 12 rockets in 44 seconds, the sources said, adding the battery can neutralize the target within 3.9 km.

The Important features of Pinaka is

  • The strike range has been increased from 40 to 55 kms.
  • Microprocessor allows the system to be fully automatic as well as manual control
  • Use of console makes it easy to use and control the launchers.
  • Night vision gears for the driver and the crew.
  • Neutralization/destruction of the exposed troop concentrations, ‘B’ vehicles and other such soft targets
  • Cabin pressurization for crew protection in addition to blast shields
  • Total operational time optimized for shoot & scoot capability.
  • Cheaper in cost then the other Multi barrel rocket launchers systems.
  • Precise and effective and the accuracy is very high.
  • Indigenously developed and the designed according the requirements of Indian army.

Modes of Operation

  • Autonomous mode: In the automous mode the microprocessor plays an important role The launcher is fully controlled by a fire control computer (FCC). The microprocessor automatically executes the commands received from the FCC and it executes the precise coordinates, giving the operator the status of the system on displays and indicators.
  • Stand-alone mode: In this mode, the launcher is not linked to the fire control computer(FCC) , and the operator at the console enters all the coordinates and the commands for laying of the launcher system and selection of firing parameters.
  • Remote mode: In this mode, a remote control unit carried outside the cabin up to a distance of about 200 m can be used to control the launcher system, the launcher site and to unload the fired rocket pods from the launcher.
  • Manual mode: All launcher operations including laying of the system and firing are manually controlled. This mode is envisaged in the situations where the microprocessor fails or where there is no power to activate the microprocessor-based operator’s console.

A Visit To Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s House ~ I Found My Temple

2

After being one of the few 250 from the vast lakhs, crossing every hurdle and surviving till the very last round of my Army selection process; Rejection was too severe to even be sad. Half-hearted good byes’ and fabricated smiles were a little obvious scene and a regular one too, at SOUTH SELECTION CENTER Bengaluru.

However, I decided to keep my promise and visit ISRO Aakash layout, Yelahanka, Bengaluru. 2 hours from main Bengaluru city railway station lays a simple address, a confusing path and a much less amicable bus service to reach. Every person leaving for his Pilgrimage, gets every good wish and luck possible but I was rather riddled with questions, “what if you don’t get the address, what if they don’t attend you well, what If you miss them? “Yes, the aforementioned address was a humble abode, a blissful-should be made Heritage site, a point source of National Pride-Shaheed Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s parent’s house.

spot_img

Being humanly positive, I dodged the asked questions, but even I was perplexed about what to tell them, talk to them, why am I even going there? After lots of hitchhiking, I finally reached that sacred row house. Standing at the door, after the bell rang… I saw a stern face asking, “Yes?” All I had to say was, “My name is Tejas.M.Vaidya, I’m a student from Mumbai”, and that swift transition from stern to a pleasant smile on Mr. K Unnikrishnan’s face was the cue, all’s got to be fine ahead. He knew why I had come, what for after-all his son has done such great deeds.

Maj Sandeep

Just a few clicks on Youtube and old paper clippings very elegantly explain to you how rude and bitter Mr. Unnikrishnan is. Going with the same notion, yet determined to meet my heroes parents, as I cautiously entered that house and sitting on their couch, the first thing I saw was a chilled glass of a welcome juice and some snacks. Mr.Unnikrishnan was to hurry for work; he calmly sat down beside me and talked to me. He asked me all sorts of questions, about me, about my family, my Army exam, my education and carefully paying attention to every word is said. A bit betwixt, he reminisced his son and referred his instances, about his will to join the army, his simple being, humble attitude, love for stray dogs, his manners. He said, “Sandeep is still with us, not in physical being but my sub-conscious is drenched with him.” He went a step ahead to even prove it: he couldn’t find his Mumbai-Railway timetable and route guide for 3 months, but that day as per him, Major Shaheed in his subconscious propelled him to search it again, saying maybe this Mumbai boy may bring luck and he found it (Unbelievable or fabricated, seems so right? isn’t’. )

17190912 446137755777997 1167375858725498766 n

I was fortunate to see every medal Major earned in his lifetime and so after; His photos, from childhood, all the poems, write-ups and eulogies sent to them from all over Bharat.   My adrenaline peaked or catapulted when I first time in life saw an Ashoka Chakra. I’ll bluntly say, believe it or not… I did feel the presence of my Hero, Major Sahib in that house. That’s where I had one of the most honest of thoughts, “I FOUND MY TEMPLE.”

After more and more friendly talks with uncle and aunty, I had the most royal lunch… excellent daal kadhi, 2 delumptious vegetables, rice and more types of daals; all vegetables homespun!!!… Marring every news, highlight and false notion about Mr.Unnikrishnan, about his bitterness, I saw a very humble proud father, a caring uncle. To my luck, he gave me a surprise in the end…. He proudly said, come I will give you something, his mother added that I’am lucky and stroked my cheek and BAAAAMMMMM!!!!!

spot_img

There was Unni uncle, withdrawing a cover from an old kinetic 4 stroke bike, “This is his bike, he bought it from his owns money, I’ll drop you on this to the bus stop.” Such a big man dropped me off at the bus station, after which he went for his owns work. As I was riding back to my room, I received a call from an unknown number, “Have your reached your room?, don’t astray, reach on time and in case you miss your bus to Mumbai, come stay with us, next time if you come for your army exam in Bengaluru come here, this is your house only.” That firm voice was Unni uncle, who had already stored my number I left in his visitor’s diary. We spoke last as I confirmed my safe arrival back home and he promised to visit my home when he visits Thane next.

For every defense aspirant, this is his true pilgrimage. I’ll go a step further and mention some other things, please do visit them, they feel proud and stronger every time. “Don’t come up, I will handle them”. Were his last words, “Life is for living not for regretting. Never bother another person in your life”, were Shaheed Major Unnikrishnan’s one of the first few words of wisdom.

A more shameful thing is, there are multiple roads and exam halls, chowks and structure is named after Shaheed Major but Unni uncle still stands in a queue to renew his pass, has to wait unnecessarily at senile government offices. They barely know who he is, or bluntly reply, “SO WHAT!!!”, when he mentions his son’s name. CM didn’t attend his sons funeral, went overboard and openly said, “if it were not for Major, not even a dog will visit that house.”

Not done eh boss, not done.

I found my temple and I have found my cause, what about you?

Group Planning Exercise 7

Group planning exercise is the first task of the GTO, and should be seen as a sound opportunity for making an impression on the GTO. A group planning exercise contains a set of problems which brings out all “officers’ like qualities” in a candidate which encompasses quality to lead (the lads), organizing, courage, team work, spontaneity, and effective intelligence, etc.

We are sharing an exercise to practice; you can share your remedies in the comment box.

Group Planning Exercise 7

You are 8 friends from Ranikhet went to Kalnu hills for expedition. You are staying in a small lodge at Malroad market. You have a return train at 7.00 pm leaving for Ranikhet from Sahibabad station. You were taking a stroll in the market when a person comes running to you and tells you there is a landslide have occurred in Kalnu hills and many people get trapped in the landslide. He also tells you that the fish plate of the train track has been removed near Sahibabad station because of poor maintenance. A train passes the track at 6.30pm. In the meanwhile another person tells you that an accident occurred on Ratnagar highway which led few people injured. There is a hospital and a NDRF team in Chaubatia village. Carts are available at Jhakra village. It is 5:00 pm already. As being young and brave, what you will do.

How withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan will Affect India

International affairs are very important in SSB as it affect India and its security. Withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan in 2014 is one of the matters India is observing closely.

NATO

NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan will affect India the most as India has pledged assistance to Afghanistan about $2 billion and is the 5th largest bilateral donor to the country. India has not indulged himself in the war against Taliban and Al-Qaeda as it can cause threat to India’s safety and protection. India has building dams, college, schools, roads and building in Afghanistan. Beside that India built the new parliament of Afghanistan and furthermore India has given scholarships to students and providing training to soldiers as well. India has also taken Charbar port from Iran as Gwadar port has been taken by China from Afghanistan.
India has been cautious in Defense cooperation as it can be a threat to India from Taliban but focused on training of Police.

How withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan will Affect India

Challenges for India post withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan .

  1. After the withdrawal of NATO, Taliban will be rejuvenated under the control of ISI of Pakistan.
  2. Second challenge will be from Pakistan which has continued to back Taliban and Anti–Indian actors.
  3. Third is the remerging power of Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

India’s stake

India is adopting a low key role in the last few years, India’s help in reconstruction and development have well received and by the people. India’s small-budget interventions in Pashtu areas have been well appreciated by the population in areas infested by the militants, which has even forced the Taliban to grudgingly acknowledge India’s constructive role. The partnership agreement between the two countries allows India to strengthen linkages in the security sector too. The common Afghan is keen that India continues to play a bigger role in stabilizing Afghanistan. In contrast, Pakistan has lost credibility among the Afghans, who consider it as a country which does not have anything positive to offer, and can only export terrorism and destabilize the situation further.

Economic Stability

India-Afghanistan economic stability is one of that affect India-Afghanistan relationship. Free Trade Agreement with Afghanistan can be one of the options. The recent investment summit on Afghanistan is a good beginning that must be sustained. Afghanistan is in urgent need of measures to boost its revenue generating capacity. India can contribute in the field of agriculture, building infrastructure (railroads, highways, processing plants, etc.), which could spur long-term economic growth and create jobs, and building of institutions that will stabilize the process of democratization.

Q1- Write about your strengths and weaknesses?

Ans – The most important thing for a personality test to be remembered is one should have a good introspection of his/her personality to know and understand your strength and weakness much better. But when it comes to written make sure that you write only those strengths which are most comparable to officers like qualities. Think of how your personality will help you in your job. Now coming to weaknesses, mention only those weaknesses that you are working on and never write those weaknesses that can affect your selection. If you are a kind of person who works on his weaknesses, its fine, but if you are a procrastinate type, who overlook his weaknesses and says to work on his weakness but never does, then either work on it or otherwise don’t write it. Try to talk to your parents, friends, and teachers and find out more about your weaknesses and make them in your strength.

For example– In my case, one of person in my friends said in his interview that one of his strength is he always choose his friends because he believes that if he choose his friends wisely he’ll don’t get into bad company and will be successful. Which interprets him as opportunist, unfriendly, selfish.

Q2- Write about your friends’ strengths and weaknesses?

Ans– Now if you’ve friends you must have like them for most of their qualities and dislike them for their mistake, try to write as many positive qualities of your friends. To elaborate more, you can give examples – How they helped in winning your battles of personal failures to convert them into success? Why do you like them? How you help them in achieving their aims. I would suggest that if you think that you are friendly in nature then you must remember names of all the people in your group and their likes and dislikes. Give examples how you help during their problem, during their ups and downs.

I hope this article will help you in understanding interview self-description much better.

Best of luck!
