Importance of Being Positive for a Defence Aspirant

1
Indian Army Lady Officers

Already thought of joining Indian defence services?  Alas… You are on the right path. Indian defence is one of the best services one could opt for being in India. It is a place where you could live for your country and think of serving and protecting its rights. Being surrounded by neighbours who do not tend to have good relations with our country it’s the need of time. Every youth want to contribute to its motherland but the real right is bestowed to the defence personnel’s only.

They are the real heroes and have the power to do so. If you want to be one, identify the need of service for motherland in your heart and brain and then move ahead. SSB a wonderful 5 day stint and the gateway to be an officer with Indian defence requires a synchronisation between your body, heart and mind. Whatever you think with your mind should without any conflict be agreed upon by your heart and should be reflected in your action with the help of your body. This synchronisation helps in removing the duality of thought and action becomes result oriented. You never turn back to your decision for validation. Remember, an officer never has another chance to think whether the decision he has taken is right or wrong. The protection of motherland never gives another chance to think what’s next?  If these three function together you are the right one to move ahead. SSB clearly judges you as a person and recommends you only if you have sufficient OLQ’s. The parameters are stringent and are not changed for anyone. Popularity of defence is growing not because it pays you high but it’s the only place in India where no reservation applies. All are equally treated here and judged on tough parameters before clearing.

The mantra for success is the positivity one carries in life. You are tested to look how positive one can be in adverse situations. Positivity changes way of thinking and can convert an adverse situation into a good one. This is a tested formula and yes it has worked for years for the defence personnel’s in acquiring the right talent. The officers that get recommended not only have a different approach to look at situations but are daring enough to think differently than the so called “civilians”. You should have a positive thought process and it should be developed since the inception. Be happy in every situation you face. The thought process of positivity is something that takes time to build in and it cannot be developed immediately when you get a ssb call. This would definitely be a help in psychology section and would be reflected in whatever you answer in PI. So get ready….. Built in positivity…. time is flowing off.
In next article I would be concentrating more on the hidden mantras to get success in SSB. This article tries to tell the advantage of being positive so be one.

What are the OLQ’s That are Needed to Clear SSB Interview

OLQs SSB Interview

“SSB is a battle. Only brave can survive it!!! “~~ Jayendra. Battles are only meant for soldiers. Wrong thought indeed. Everyone who is surviving on this earth is striving to make the best of it.  Every second we tend to fight a battle to survive. Ask a mother who constantly fights battle with time for sending her children in time to school, preparing them breakfast and lunch so that they do not feel discomfort. Ask a student who fights battle constantly for securing good grades and thrive to learn more to exist in this competitive world. What about a father who constantly works hard to earn a living so that his family could survive. What about a beggar who is trying hard to earn a penny for his children so that they can have food at night. Life is just another name for struggle. Those who do it properly live life enjoy fully.

But the other thing one needs to keep in mind is that nothing is impossible here. Those who achieve and those who fail are human beings only. It’s their effort and hard work which later reflects in their achievements. Nothing is possible without hard work. Luck or Noise function as we call it in MBA merely plays a significant role in other exams but SSB is not the place for it. No luck factor plays a role here. You might hear people saying at last that I was asked tough questions while others had been asked what they knew. Please understand such comments are given by people who are screened out or are not recommended. The evaluators at SSB judge everyone through the same eye. It however matters that such people could have done well if they would have prepared it and should be thorough in everything.
SSB has a set of parameters where you are judged for Officer like qualities (OLQ’s) as we call them. The following are the OLQ’s that one must have:
  • Effective Intelligence
  • Reasoning ability
  • Organising ability
  • Power of expression
  • Cooperation
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Self confidence
  • ability to influence group
  • Speed of Decision
  • Initiative
  • Determination
  • Honesty
  • Stamina
  • Courage
    OLQs SSB Interview
So clearing SSB is more of a mental game rather than a physical one. SO just keep calm and be stress free. Get ready to work hard and keep yourself relaxed. Various rounds of SSB are just meant to judge the above qualities in you. If you have it in you no one can stop you from clearing it. So get ready to fight the battle… At last remember the quote below and always feel contended that you are getting better in life.
You may not be where you want to be but you can definitely look back and be thankful you are not where you used to be. ~~ Soel Osteer
For other matters like preparation help, counselling you are free to contact me. It would be my pleasure to see you grow as officer.

The Indian Navy fleet has got yet another star in its fleet. This new member of the Naval family will strengthen the Indian Navy and also showcase India’s talent to build its own vessel. The new member in the family is INS Kamorta. It is a stealth corvette. It is India’s first indigenously-built anti submarine warfare corvette. It is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata, it will be the first warship armed with an indigenous rocket launcher for anti submarine warfare.

It is part of Project 28, approved in 2003. It was launched in 2010 and was expected to be commissioned in 2013. But due to some factors its delivery was late so now its all ready to be commissioned by July 2014. The sophisticated front line warship with stealth features will also be the first warship armed with the new trainable chaff launcher – Kavach.

INS Kamorta

With an approximate displacement of 3400 tonnes, it can achieve a maximum speed of 25 knots. It is powered by four indigenously designed 3888 KW diesel engines at 1050 rpm and can cover nearly 3,500 nautical miles at 18 knots.  The overall length of the ship is 109 meters and is nearly 13 metres wide at its maximum bulge. With about 90 per cent of the ship being indigenous, it is also capable of deploying a helicopter, adding considerable punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability. It is also the first naval ship fitted with bow mounted ‘Sonar’ (sound navigation and ranging) for enhanced underwater surveillance. Integration of indigenous surveillance radar (Revathi) for surface and air surveillance is another first on any Indian warship.
Each ship will be manned by 14 officers and 150 sailors. With reverse osmosis plant for fresh water generation, sewage treatment plant with vacuum toilet facilities totally compliant with International Maritime Organisation regulations, the warship measures up to all stringent regulatory needs to operate across oceans of the world.
The sturdy warship is the first in its class of four ASW corvettes being built for the Indian Navy. Named after islands in Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshwadeep archipelago, ASW corvettes Kadmatt, Kiltan and Kavaratti are to follow suit progressively.

Clothes You Will Need for SSB Interview

SSB Dress Code

We get a lot of queries form our aspirants regarding the dress they require for SSB. So we decided to come up with a dedicated article on that. There is a particular dress code which you are supposed to follow while you are in your interview. In fact that is why everything is clearly mentioned in your call up letter. However  we have tried to give you event by event dress code here so that you might get some help.

  • Screening Day: Men need to wear a formal attire. Of course there is no compulsion but still it’ll make you look more sincere as this is the first instance you’ll appear in front of the board. Similarly for the lady candidates also, you are also advised to wear either western formals or simple salwar kurta. Men can wear dark trousers with light shirt and formal shoes.
  • Psychology Test: for this test you can wear anything decent enough.
  • Interview: For interview you need a formal pair of clothes. Both for the ladies and the men. Though sometimes you might be called for the interview immediately after your GTO but make sure to change your clothes if you even have a few minutes time. Here also men can wear formal trouser and shirt and ladies can wear either shirt-trouser or salwar kurta.
    SSB Dress Code
  • GTO: For your GT series you need to have a white t shirt. Apart from it ladies can wear either shorts or track pants which should again be in white color. Men can wear white track pants. A white track suit will also be suitable. If you have a problem finding pure white clothes get the ones with around 90% white content. Ladies are allowed to wear white colored salwar kurta as well.
  • Conference: For conference you have wear formal clothes just like interview. You have to appear in front of the whole board so you need to look presentable and formal.
  • General purpose: Carry a night clothing or a suitable night dress for room. For mess premises also you have to go in decent preferably formal clothes.
  • Shoes: Wear formal clothes with formal dress. Wear white sports shoes (if not then shoes with maximum white content) for GTO. You can’t roam in slippers so carry appropriate shoes to roam around in the premises.
Some important points:
  1. You can carry a pair of jeans and two t shirts for traveling and book out purposes.
  2. Not much casual clothing is required as you won’t get chance to wear it so carry clothes appropriately.
  3. You are not required to carry pillow or blanket but do carry one thin sheet for night.
  4. In mess you are expected to be in formal clothes so please follow that.
  5. Wear decent, mostly semi-formal or formal clothes in the campus all the time.

7 Ways To Be An Effective Leader

0

Being a good leader involves more than simply bossing people around while great leaders are sometimes born.  But we all have the potential to lead by example. Here is what you need to keep in mind if you want to strengthen your leadership muscle:

  1. Fail big: Don’t be scared to fail big. Failure is okay and can be good, only as long as you are able to fail forward and learn from each and every mistake. Each time you fail, you grow.
  2. Banish self-doubt: A lack of confidence can stop you from taking charge. Feelings of anxiety or doubt can distort your self-image. Focus on daily successes (no matter how small they are) in order to keep self-doubt at bay. Celebrate your past accomplishments and keep your confidence level high.
  3. Focus on results: What really matters is that leaders are able to create enthusiasm, empower their people, instill confidence and inspire others. Leaders come in all different forms-introvert, extrovert, casual, formal, you name it. It’s the result that matters, not the style.
  4. Keep improving: A third of what it takes to be a good leader is inherited, but that just means the other two-thirds are up for grabs. Most traits can be improved, strengthened and reinforced with practice and training.
  5. Fake it: The world has never been altogether friendly to introverts. It is for this reason that the most successful introverts have mastered the ability to act like extroverts, a reminder that learning how to fake it is still an important tool in a leader’s arsenal.
  6. Laugh:  Why? Just think about the people you’re most likely to trust and get along with-probably not those who take themselves too seriously. A leader who encourages laughter tends to be less hierarchical and thus more innovative.
  7. Be responsible: ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ This classic line from Spiderman reinforces the idea that leaders must own their responsibility during the good times and the bad times. Leaders who step , generate more trust and respect.

Lessons From Sports: Creating Chances

Lessons From Sports: Creating Chances
The Football fever is on and there might be hardly one who doesn’t watch the football match. Football is the most energetic game and almost everyone likes to play as well as watch it but did you ever try to get a message that it delivers? While analyzing the statistics of a football match, there are a few crucial statistics one must focus on. First and foremost is obviously the score of the match. Secondly the possession of the ball- which team is in more control of the game? And lastly, how many opportunities to score goals did each team have? There is very simple correlation between these statistics that delivers a meaningful message- ‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take’.

This message is so true not only in football, basketball or any other sport, but also in many aspects of our lives. If we don’t take chances or initiatives, we won’t be successful. In order for us to score and win in life, don’t we (like footballers in a match) need to create those goal-scoring opportunities? Don’t we need to actively create situations that will pave our way to victory? Of course YES!
Let’s suppose that you are job hunting and you expect to get a job by sending your CV or resume to a few companies and expect them to offer you your dream job, Know that it is highly unlikely. On the other hand, if you actively put yourself in situations where you increase your employability –by attending a specific course or thoroughly researching a company-before sending your application to them, aren’t you giving yourself a greater chance to bag that job you aspire to? In essence, you must ask yourself, “Am I putting myself in a position to win and achieve my targets?”
Indian Air Force Pilots
Here are a few questions that you can ask yourself that may help you put yourself in a better position to achieve your goals, be it for a job promotion or anything you wish to achieve in life. These are all questions that sport coaches ask players to think about:
  • Can I improve upon my individual skills?
  • Can I improve communication with other people?
  • Do I have enough strength to beat my opponents?
  • Am I able to tackle the situations that make me panic?
  • Am I associating with the right people?
  • Am I confident in my skills?
If the answer for these questions is YES, then reinforce those actions and don’t let them go. But if the answer is NO, then there is a chance for you to work on yourself and keep on growing and get into a good position.
Always remember, if you create zero opportunities to score, you will never win. And you can still win the game even if you are not in full control of it as long as you are effective. So, focus on increasing your odds of scoring, create chances and succeed!

Truth of Life Which We Forget. Follow to Succeed

Truth of Life Which We Forget

There are many things in life which come in front of us in different forms but we tend to neglect the happenings and perceive them differently. If we remember the following we can spend life happily because happiness is the key to success as it provides opportunity to keep brain tension free and it could be applied wherever we want. Even to fulfill our dream too.

  1. Life is very small, live it: Death is the reality of life and it happens to everyone but this does not mean that we start fearing and not enjoy our life. We should enjoy each and every moment in life. Whatever we get, we should be satisfied with that. We should not run for unsatisfied things which we always wanted but could not get. Life is seamless, our demands never end but we should learn to live satisfactorily with whatever we have.
  2. You make your life not others: There are few people who will be part of your life and will be special to you. Others are there who are not at all important but will try to interfere in your life. But the final decision how to live your life lies with you. I would suggest you should hear from everyone and extract the best out of it to follow in your life. This is just so simple because you only change your life but blame others that they are affecting. Govern it yourself.
  3. Whatever we think is different of what we do or get: Life is full of opportunities but everyone is not lucky enough to get all. Whatever you think of in dream or reality may not be the reality but working for it with full dedication is needed so that at the end there is no feeling that i could have worked more to achieve. We should not be result oriented but work oriented. Give your best shot and the best will follow.
  4. Success is accompanied with failures:  Failures are not bad for life. It brings along the learning but worst part is with those people who don’t want to learn from their mistakes. We should not ignore the mistakes and take proper learning. We should not fear from failures as this move along and life is full of different colours, one of which is failing and getting along and starting life.
Truth of Life Which We Forget. Follow to Succeed
  5. Some people are not made for you: Some people will cause negativity in your life. Everyone is not made for you. You have to decide who will live in you vicinity as that particular should be chosen who gives positivity to you and brings you a life full of happiness. Positivity is needed by you to succeed, and remember everyone will not be happy when you achieve and do well in your life. So choose wisely.
  6. Life changes continuously: Whatever you have today will not be with you tomorrow. Things around you and people changes continuously and also the situations. So whatever good time comes along the way take it and enjoy else you will be lost in this world of multiple opportunities. Success might be followed by failure but don’t forget to remember good times and enjoy each moment of life.

Follow these simple mantras and you will see that life is full of opportunities. There is lot to laugh on and live on.

How to Prepare for Psychology Round

1

How to Prepare for Psychology Round

“Worry is a total waste of time. It doesn’t change anything all it does is steal your joy and keep you very busy doing nothing” ~~ Anonymous

Psychology round at SSB is designed to test your brain waves so as to get the idea that in which direction you think. You would hear people saying that all you intend to do in a SSB is to mention heroic acts, be positive. This is not at all wrong but the excess of this myth might lead to disaster.

Remember the following:

  • Keep your mind tension free
  • Worry is the root cause of failure
  • Thinking good about yourself is must
  • Self appreciation must be practiced regularly
  • Result oriented approach never takes you to results.
    Para Jump
Please remember that in a SSB where assessors are very expert and trained to read human behaviour you also need to act smart and remember the mantra “Don’t try to show off, just be yourself” If you follow this simple mantra sure shot success is there. When people try to make use of their brain and try to mould and modify their thought process they are caught and rejected. Psychology round judges how much your brain resembles you and your actions which would come alive during the course of SSB. So do we need to fake here? Strictly, not… Just be you.
The various rounds for Psychology are:
  • TAT: which means story writing based on your visualisation
  • WAT: framing sentences based on thought process you get after seeing words
  • SRT: Reacting to situations of daily life
  • Self appreciation: How much you know yourself and how much you think others know about you.
This simple round makes the psychology test. It’s of utmost importance to succeed in this round as it determines whether you are suited for Indian defence forces or not. Remember the following for sure shot success and ensure that you believe:
  • You are the best:  Though you might have failed several times in life, but still you are the best if you had tried sincerely for your dream Competition is stiff and there are lakhs of people running for the same thing .Not making does not mean you are bad. It simply means you need to try more as there are still people better than you. Believe in yourself and keep trying success goanna be yours. If you stop trying it simply means you lack a quality and you quit easily which simply means you are not at all fit for the defence force and it gives justification to the fact that you were not selected.
  • No word is negative if you have positive approach:  It’s the way that makes change in your perception and you become good or bad in a situation or starts getting good or bad thoughts about a thing. So see everything positively and see the magic that gets your thought process change suddenly and you would be the one enjoying each and every moment of this life.

Nothing is tough in life; it’s the thought process that makes things tough and easy. Enjoy and be positive.

Recommended In Air Force, Navy and Army PART 2: Navy (UES)

0

After the Air Force SSB, I had one week time for the next SSB, the Navy UES SSC. The recommendation in the Air Force had boosted my confidence & morale and my desire to give SSB(s) got intense. So for the upcoming Navy SSB, I prepared and made notes related to the technical questions, Indian Navy and its working, assets and about GK. I also did introspection, worked upon improving my negativities and weak points that came up during the Air Force SSB.

The reporting was on 23rd December, 2013 at Bhopal at 1300hrs. I reached Bhopal through train, joined other candidates for the SSB on the way to the bus. Inside the bus, I looked at the candidates and everyone was serious, thinking about getting screened in, recommended and about God. I, myself, am no alien to it as I was also little bit nervous about the future but the backing of the recommendation in Air Force helped putting me at ease.

Unlike AFSB, here on the day I arrived, was just document verification and form filing. It is important to keep all your documents ready with at least three sets of photocopies of them along with forty photocopies of the passport sized photo (light & plain shirt, simple tie, nice haircut, smiling face, white background). After that, there was briefing; about the stay, dos and don’ts in SSB area, upcoming events starting from next day; by a dashing naval officer. I was awestruck by the fluency he spoke in. Anyways, after that refreshments are given (which is paid and it is better to remain hungry for a while for dinner).

Recommended In Air Force, Navy and Army

Next day was screening. Verbal and non verbal tests (quite simple) and then PPDT. During the narration, some of the candidates fumbled despite being repeaters (of course I was in the repeater’s group & candidates with recommendations and merit outs in it). In discussion, it was really a fish market (earlier I used to read about famous ‘fish market’ of the SSB in the experiences of others but now I had the honor of experiencing it myself). The officer warned to throw all of us out if we started selling fishes together again. Thereafter, it was a pleasant discussion, a nomination and the conclusion. Nomination should be me to me (me nominating myself). I was happy and satisfied with the screening process. Out of the eighty who reported, thirty eight got screened in. More form filling (PIQ – crucial & decisive).
Psychology Tests, many of the stories, words and situations were repeated. So more or less, the whole activity was same as in AFSB. Although, this time I was not able to do all the SRTs, but I didn’t think much over it because whatever I had solved, I was contented with them.
Ground tasks were held the next day and the day after it. In GPE, I was nominated & after the speech, I was pointed out by the GT officer (who happens to be the same dashing naval officer I talked about earlier) about not mentioning the timings while carrying out the plan. Timings are important because without it, the defense organizations cannot work accurately. In Lecturette, the topic was Women Empowerment. My number was at last, so I was attentive the whole time (unlike in AFSB where after giving the Lecturette, I took a nap). In the Individual Obstacle, I improvised, doing ten and was glad about that. In command task, I was called first and was asked the time limit to finish the task; however I took a bit more time but was able to complete the task. I believe that I or anyone could definitely improve performance by carefully looking the whole obstacle before working upon it and by listening to the officer meticulously (I was not careful this time). Also, it is said that more the number of times you were called as a subordinate, more beneficial it will be for you; although it is somewhat true, still there is no need to get dejected even if you were not called. I was not called even once both in Air Force SSB and here. So it’s not a big problem. In GDs, HGT, FGT, PGT, my group had good discussions and nice planning. Snake Race was full of josh and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This time, the interviewing officer was the president of 33 SSB, Bhopal. I reported for the interview immediately after lunch but was told by the IO himself to come around 1730 hrs so that the interview can be started by 1800 hrs. I slept in between & reported again at the stated time. After waiting for some more time, I was called in. Unlike the environment inside the interviewing room at AFSB, the climate here was somewhat tense (to be frank, I was nervous). The questions were shooted at me in rapid fire manner. While answering, the officer dwelled deep into some more questions and then I continued answering the rapid fire questions. An awkward moment came when suddenly I forgot all the questions; silence of about thirty seconds, after which I started answering the questions which I could remember (later I came to know that I skipped a lot of questions). Then second part of the interview came in which I was asked technical questions, the first question being ‘Archimedes Principle’. Believe me ladies and gentlemen, it may seem to be a pretty easy question, but for me, it came out to be a tongue twister. I started correctly but with each word that came out of my mouth, I got confused and said totally wrong answer, I tried again but still with the same result. In between, I spoke some keywords like volume, weight, force which I could not able to correlate with the answer. Then the officer asked me what is the difference between mass and weight, then about volume, force and weight. I was utterly puzzled. Still I tried to put a brave smiling face and spoke whatever came to my mind. Being a computer science student, I was asked the question “what is bootstrap program and why it is called so”. I was totally blank and said something with a cheerful face to which the officer said “Don’t shoot shit and that too with confidence”. I thought that was end of my interview & my navy selection but then he posed another question i.e. “What is the use of the cell in the laptop or computer”, “What is CMOS & its use”. I was not able to give answer to any of these questions. He also asked me “Out of Air Force and Navy, which you want to join and what will be your job profile in Navy as an officer”. Honestly speaking, I did prepare about the Navy but forgot to prepare my job profile. Also as the interview was not going on the right path (path which I imagined), I, in order to please the officer, said I want to join Navy but then again went blank when he asked “Why”. Ladies and Gentlemen, although I had prepared a lot for the SSB but unfortunately I was not at all ready for such questions. It was a grave mistake (especially the one in which I tried to please the officer by saying I want to join Navy instead of Air Force without knowing why). The officer at the end told me to prepare these questions for the conference. After the interview, I was sad and was sure of not getting recommended. But I did not lose hope and noted down all the questions and their answers which I was not able to give during the interview. Later I diverted my attention by visiting places in Bhopal with my friends.

On the day of conference, I had prepared well for the questions I was asked to at interview. When my turn came, then after few pleasantries such as my stay, food; each and every unanswered question of the interview was asked to me and thanking God for the common sense God put in me after the interview to find out the answers of all those questions, I, with confidence, was able to give every answer and was able to convince the board members in the best possible manner. Later at the end, I was asked the places I went to see in Bhopal. Even though I gave my best reply to every question that is asked to me & was happy about it, still in some corner of my mind, I was anxious and nervous about my selection. So when the results were declared, it came to me a big surprise when my name was called at the very first. It was very much unexpected as I thought that given my performance, even if I was selected, then also I should be called at the end. So after my name was announced, I was beaming with happiness. Total seven out of thirty eight were selected. Thereafter, the president shook hands with all of us and wished us best of luck for the future. We all were then taken for form filling and the medicals started from the next day.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this ends the second part of my SSB experience. I will be posting about my Army SSB experience soon. Wish you all the best for the SSBs. Any queries related to SSB, you can mail it to me at: [email protected].
