Many a times we have emphasized the importance of picture perception and discussion test (PPDT) in the screening process of the SSB interview. Today we will try to make the procedure more coherent so that no doubts remain in your mind. Earlier there was no picture perception and discussion test in the Selection Procedure but due a spurt in the number candidates appearing for SSB, this method was adopted to choose suitable candidates for further testing.
Picture Perception And Discussion Test METHOD
PART ONE
You are shown a hazy picture on the projector screen for 30 seconds. You are required to note down the number of characters, their age, gender and mood and then write a story revolving them in the next 3 minutes in a sheet of paper. The sheet of paper is taken from you after the completion of 3 minutes. This test is similar to the TAT of psychological testing. You must frame a story with a suitable past, appropriate present and logical end. Your story should revolve around the HERO of the story who uses the resources available with him to solve the problem in the picture.
PART TWO
You are then divided into groups of 8-15 (depending upon the strength) and made to sit in a semi circle. The GTO, Psychologist and Interviewing Officer are present there. You are given back your sheet for a few seconds so that you recall the story which you wrote. Then you are required to narrate your individual story to the group one by one. Once the last member of the group finishes his narration, a group discussion starts within the group members to form a common story of the group. This is one of the trickiest parts of the whole picture perception and discussion test procedure.
Picture Perception And Discussion Test POINTS TO REMEMBER
As far as writing the story is concerned, make a robust and meaningful story which revolves around a hero who exhibits leadership qualities.
Be very quick in writing the story as you get only 3-3.5 minutes. However, if you cannot complete your story, need not worry as there are no negative marks for it.
You will get a tea break after the first part; utilize that break to prepare your narration. A coherent and crisp narration will fetch you good points in the Group Discussion.
Do not look at the assessors during the narration or the GD. Confidently put your points forward to everybody in the group.
Try to initiate the Group Discussion, but if you cannot, make sure that you are amongst the first 3-4 speakers.
Do not speak for the heck of it; put constructive ideas which will help the group in coming close to the group solution.
If you are not getting a point to speak, support the group member who has a relevant point.
Listening is as important as speaking. Listen to the group members’ point of view as well.
Maintain a gentlemanly disposition and do not commit the blunder of becoming aggressive and getting into an altercation with your group members.
Be polite and if you think you have spoken enough, give chance to the other members of your group.
Whatever you do, always keep in mind that you are a team player and not a selfish individual.
I hope you have gained some insight about the picture perception and discussion test procedure through this article. For any queries, you can contact me on [email protected]. Keep visiting ssbcrack, JAI HIND

Ever thought of becoming the Indian navy pilot landing high speed fighter jets on aircraft carriers? This video will show you how to land a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. Landing on a flight deck is a standout amongst the most troublesome things a naval force pilot will ever do. The flight deck just has around 500 feet (~150 meters) of runway space for arriving planes, which isn’t almost enough for the substantial, high velocity streams on transporters.
To arrive on the flight deck, every plane needs a tailhook, which is precisely what it seems like – a stretched out snare joined to the plane’s tail. The pilot’s objective is to obstacle the tailhook on one of four capturing wires, tough links woven from high-malleable steel wire.

With so many things coming for personality development and other related articles aspirants have been writing me to get back to basics. I had been writing a lot about how to start preparation for SSB and also about the basic cycle that should be followed by the aspirants for sure shot success. The way of how to start preparation has been given in my previous cycle. Try to follow it for maximum utilisation of time, else the things might not be utilised properly. In this article I would like to suggest the basics of how to clear the very first day. Let me make very clear to the beginner’s that only those who clear day 1 of screening test are allowed to stay for the rest of four days at the centre and they can only give the rest of the rounds. Rest aspirants are asked to return on the day itself from the SSB centre.
Screening test consists of basic testing of aptitude followed by PPDT. Aptitude has been covered by me in separate articles, so let’s focus now on the PPDT, which is picture perception and discussion test in which a hazy picture is shown and the aspirants need to write a story based on the observation. Once the story is written people are divided into sub groups, so that the GD can happen where it is expected to deliver a common story. The main part which helps in selection in screening test is the way the story is written which needs a positive perception and the individual narration. Also the GD should be good. So let me give some mantra of success to write a good story:
How To Clear Screening Test In SSB Interview
Story should be related to your personality rather than something which you copied from some source or some book. Everything at SSB should be personality specific. So remember a story can help one person to get recommended while if followed by someone who has different personality can lead to screen out as result. So write what suits you.
Also the story should have all the basic elements which are expected by the examiners there which they actually narrate while starting the exam. Pay attention to all the instructions and mark things accordingly in the answer sheet.
Once the story is well written the key to success lies in the individual narration also, so it should be time bound and flawlessly spoken.
Stories written should perfectly reveal your qualities also so that the assessors know that you are an officer material and can select you.
Action of the story and marking the replica in the box given looks like small things but are equally important so follow the rules while writing and marking.
Don’t go at SSB just like this, prepare, introspect, visualize, change yourself as per need and then go to SSB with full preparation. Though it is said that you have to be yourself but the real exercise is to start early n realise what you actually are beforehand for sure shot success.
Body language and how to perform in a GD in such an exercise is very important and I would deal it in a separate article. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for OLQ’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected] or add me on Fb and drop in a message. Though I keep on saying that SSB is the easiest exam but it can only become easy if your preparation’s are appropriate and the efforts are done in the right direction.
