Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, reviewed the operational preparedness of the elite 10 Para (Special Forces), popularly known as the “Desert Scorpions.” During his visit, the Army Commander received a detailed briefing on the unit’s strategic role, its evolving warfighting capabilities, and the integration of next-generation equipment aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.

The review covered the specialized training programs undertaken by the unit, including aerial insertion techniques and combat diving skills, both crucial for executing precision-based special operations in diverse and challenging terrains. The briefing also highlighted the unit’s advanced combat capabilities, honed for desert warfare, aligning with its operational mandate to dominate desert regions stretching from Punjab to Gujarat.

10 Para (SF) was raised in 1967 following its split from 9 Para (SF) and has since established itself as one of the Indian Army’s premier special forces units. Known for their rigorous training, the Desert Scorpions endure extreme physical conditions, including prolonged sleep deprivation, limited rations, and heavy endurance loads to build unmatched resilience. Their training includes specialized modules in weaponry, navigation, communication, medical aid, and demolition techniques at the Special Forces Training Centre.

The unit has a storied operational history, having played a pivotal role in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, where it executed the highly successful Chachro Raid deep inside enemy territory. Additionally, 10 Para (SF) contributed to India’s counter-insurgency efforts in Jammu and Kashmir and participated in critical operations during the Kargil War.
Commending the Desert Scorpions for their unwavering commitment, high training standards, and relentless pursuit of excellence, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth emphasized the importance of continual innovation and adaptation in modern warfare. He encouraged all ranks to maintain their operational supremacy and remain at the forefront of India’s special operations capabilities.
