In the heart of the world’s highest and coldest battlefield, where survival is a daily challenge, courage shines the brightest. Captain Rohan Rabindra Hanagi of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME) proved this when he saved nearly 20 lives during a life-threatening avalanche at Siachen Glacier in 2023.
For his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the prestigious Sena Medal (Gallantry) by Northern Army Commander Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar at a defence investiture ceremony in Mathura on February 14, 2025.
A Test of Courage Under 20 Feet of Snow
In 2023, a massive avalanche struck Captain Hanagi and his team, burying them under 20 feet of snow. Trapped in the harshest conditions imaginable, Captain Hanagi remained composed and fearless.
His decisive leadership and swift actions ensured the safe extrication of himself and his team members, saving nearly 20 lives. His story stands as a testament to the valor, resilience, and unwavering spirit of the Indian Army.
A Leader Beyond Compare
A second-generation soldier from Karnataka, Captain Hanagi dedicated his honor to his unit, the EME Corps, and his brave team. In his heartfelt message, he said, “I am humbled to receive the Sena Medal for my tenure at the world’s highest battlefield. I dedicate this award to my unit and especially to the men I had the privilege to serve with. Their composure and courage in extreme adversity enabled me to fulfill my duty.”
Honoring the Bravehearts
The investiture ceremony recognized several other heroes alongside Captain Hanagi. Lt Gen Kumar honored 47 officers, JCOs, and NCOs for their outstanding service. Among them, 38 received Sena Medals (Gallantry), five were awarded Sena Medals (Distinguished), two received Yudh Seva Medals, and 10 were honored with Vishisht Seva Medals.
Inspiration for Generations
Captain Rohan Hanagi’s courage under fire and selfless service will forever inspire generations of soldiers and citizens. His bravery exemplifies the Indian Army’s ethos of ‘Service Before Self.’ As we salute this hero, his story reminds us that true valor lies not just in facing danger but in leading others to safety against all odds.
