Mana Village, Uttarakhand – On February 28, 2025, a powerful avalanche struck a General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) camp near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Sector, burying numerous workers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The disaster occurred amid heavy snowfall, with minor avalanches complicating the situation in the high-altitude region.

The Indian Army’s IBEX Brigade swiftly launched rescue operations, braving treacherous weather conditions to locate and extract trapped workers. Reports indicate that over 50 BRO personnel were caught in the avalanche near Badrinath, a key area for border infrastructure development.

As of now, 16 workers have been rescued in a coordinated effort involving the Army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The BRO, operating under India’s Ministry of Defence, plays a vital role in constructing and maintaining road networks in the country’s remote border regions.
The workers trapped in the avalanche were part of ongoing efforts to ensure connectivity in this strategically significant area. Rescue operations remain underway as teams race against time and worsening weather to save those still missing.
