In a significant development for military aviation, the US Army has awarded Sikorsky a contract worth $376 million dedicated to the ongoing production and delivery of UH-60M and HH-60M Black Hawk helicopters. The announcement, made public on Tuesday, highlights the enduring collaboration between the Army and Sikorsky in providing advanced aircraft designed to meet a variety of military operational requirements.
This robust partnership not only reinforces the Army’s commitment to maintaining its fleet of Black Hawk helicopters but also capitalizes on an existing $52-million order for HH-60M helicopters. This contract aligns with the Army’s strategic objectives to upgrade its rotorcraft capabilities, particularly utilizing funds that have been reallocated from the recently cancelled Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft program.
Under the terms of the latest contract, Sikorsky is expected to continue delivering Black Hawk helicopters to the US Army through December 2027. Additionally, discussions are ongoing about the possibility of extending helicopter production into 2032, indicating a long-term vision for the Army’s rotary-wing fleet.
The Black Hawk helicopter holds a vital role within the US Army, often described as the “backbone” of its rotary-wing operations. The newest variant, the UH-60M, features enhancements that include more powerful main rotor blades capable of generating an additional 500 pounds (226 kilograms) of lift compared to earlier models. This increase in lifting capacity is complemented by an improved fuselage, advanced infrared suppression technology, and an integrated vehicle health management system, making the UH-60M a formidable asset in various mission scenarios.
On the other hand, the HH-60M variant serves a critical role in medical evacuations. Designed to facilitate aerial medical support and patient transport, this model is equipped with two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines, enabling it to conduct evacuation missions under challenging weather conditions, thereby enhancing the Army’s capability to respond to medical emergencies in the field.
This latest funding initiative not only underscores the Army’s ongoing investment in its aviation capabilities but also reflects Sikorsky’s established reputation for delivering high-performance helicopters essential for modern military operations.
