Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued a stark warning regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the potential severity of Russia’s military capabilities. In a recent interview, Lavrov expressed hopes that Ukraine’s allies would take Moscow’s recent deployment of a hypersonic missile seriously. He conveyed that Russia is prepared to use “any means” necessary to defend itself amid what he described as attempts by the United States and its allies to impose a “strategic defeat” on Russia.
In a striking escalation of the nearly three-year war, Russia reportedly targeted the city of Dnipro with its recently developed Oreshnik hypersonic missile two weeks ago. Lavrov recounted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had indicated readiness to use this advanced weapon against Kyiv as a direct response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, which were authorized following U.S. support for Ukraine’s ATACMS missile system.
Lavrov reiterated Russia’s position, stating, “We are sending signals and we hope that the last one… was taken seriously.” He emphasized the advanced capabilities of the Oreshnik missile, asserting that it travels at ten times the speed of sound and evades existing air defense systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the missile strike, labeling it “the latest bout of Russian madness” and has called for enhanced air-defense systems to counteract the escalating threat.
In the interview with Tucker Carlson, an influential media figure in right-wing circles, Lavrov criticized the United States for its aggressive posture, suggesting that Washington’s actions amount to bullying and an intention to escalate the conflict. He maintained that while Russia is “ready for any eventuality,” it prefers to achieve a peaceful resolution through negotiations that respect Russia’s security interests.
Lavrov outlined potential terms for a peace agreement, stressing that Ukraine must recognize Russia’s claims over several regions, including Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, and Zaporizhzhia. He stated, “They are now part of the Russian Federation according to the constitution and this is a reality.” Furthermore, he accused the Biden administration’s approach as aimed at intensifying hostilities in order to tarnish the legacy of former President Donald Trump.
In his remarks, Lavrov also touched upon broader geopolitical issues, criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza as constituting “collective punishment,” which he asserted violates international humanitarian law. He expressed grave concern over the heightened violence in Syria, where rebel groups have reportedly gained ground against the government of Bashar al-Assad, a key ally of Russia. Lavrov announced plans to engage with Turkish and Iranian officials to discuss the escalating situation in Syria.
