Russia Conducts Hypersonic Missile Drills in Eastern Mediterranean Amid Syrian Conflict

In a significant display of military capability, Russia has confirmed the launch of hypersonic missiles as part of naval and air force drills conducted in the eastern Mediterranean. This exercise occurs amidst a challenging situation for Russia’s ally, Syria, which is experiencing setbacks against Islamist rebel forces.

The Russian military announced on Telegram that the number of troops deployed in the region had been increased to support these exercises, reflecting a strategic move in light of ongoing hostilities. Recently, Russian airstrikes have targeted rebel positions in a bid to bolster the defenses of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, especially following its loss of the critical city of Aleppo to insurgent groups.

Throughout the drills, which occurred on December 3, Russian forces successfully tested precision sea-based missiles in the eastern Mediterranean, showcasing advanced weaponry designed for rapid and impactful strikes. The Russian defense ministry reported the launch of various missile types during the exercises, including hypersonic Zirkon missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles. Additionally, an Onyx cruise missile was launched from a site on the Mediterranean coast, although the military did not specify the exact location of the drills.

Supporting these operations are over 1,000 Russian personnel, alongside a contingent of 10 vessels and 24 aircraft. The ministry also shared imagery of the missile launches from both ships and land, captured moments showing targets in the open water being successfully hit and detonated.

The presence of the Russian naval base at Tartus in Syria plays a crucial role in bolstering Moscow’s military engagements in the region, and the recent escalation in drills reinforces its commitment to supporting the Assad regime against opposition forces. As the situation in Syria continues to evolve, the military exercises serve as a reminder of Russia’s strategic interests and its capability to project power within the eastern Mediterranean theater.
