Navy Chief Critiques Pakistan’s Naval Expansion with Chinese Support, Adjusts Indian Navy Strategy

In a recent press conference in New Delhi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi expressed serious concerns regarding Pakistan’s collaboration with China, particularly in the realm of naval expansion. He highlighted a troubling trend in which Pakistan appears to prioritize military capabilities over the well-being of its citizens. This decision, he stated, is particularly perplexing given Pakistan’s challenging economic circumstances.

“Seeing the economy of Pakistan, it is surprising how they are building or getting ships and submarines,” noted Admiral Tripathi. “Obviously, they have chosen weapons over the welfare of their people.” His comments reflect a growing apprehension about Pakistan’s military Preparedness, which seems to be sustained despite its economic hardships.

Admiral Tripathi pointed out that a significant portion of Pakistan’s naval assets, including ships and submarines, are being developed with Chinese assistance—either in Karachi shipyards or through direct imports from China. He asserted that this partnership indicates China’s vested interest in amplifying Pakistan’s naval capabilities. Specifically, he mentioned the construction of eight new submarines, which would notably enhance the operational potential of the Pakistan Navy.

Despite these developments, the Admiral reassured that the Indian Navy is well-informed about the strategies and activities of the Pakistan Navy, including their deployment status. He emphasized that the Indian Navy is continuously adapting its operational plans to counter any potential threats arising from Pakistan’s military advancements. “We are fully aware of the goings-on in the Pakistan Navy and are prepared to tackle all threats from neighboring countries,” he stated.

In addition to addressing concerns about Pakistan, Admiral Tripathi also discussed the broader implications of China’s increased naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). He confirmed that the Indian Navy is vigilantly monitoring maritime activities in the IOR, including operations involving the People’s Liberation Army Navy and Chinese research vessels. He noted that the last recorded movement of a Chinese submarine in the IOR occurred the previous year, as it traveled between Chinese waters and Karachi.

While Admiral Tripathi acknowledged that the expansion of the Chinese Navy is more prominently aimed at the Pacific Ocean, he affirmed that the Indian Navy is committed to safeguarding India’s interests in the IOR and beyond. “We will ensure that there is no effect on our interests in the maritime domain by any navy or any country,” he asserted. He also pointed out the ambitious aspiration of the Pakistan Navy to evolve into a 50-ship force by the next decade, which he described as “surprising” growth.

This proactive stance highlights the Indian Navy’s readiness to navigate evolving security dynamics in the region, ensuring national interests are upheld amid increasing naval capabilities from neighboring countries.
