Iran Will Consider Troop Deployment to Syria if Requested by Assad’s Government

Iran is prepared to assess any requests from the Syrian government regarding the deployment of troops to assist in countering an escalating rebel offensive in northern Syria, as articulated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In a recent interview shared on his official Telegram channel, Araghchi emphasized the importance of the Syrian government’s input, stating, “If the Syrian government asks us to send forces to Syria, we will study their request.”

For decades, Iran and Syria have maintained a strong alliance, with Tehran traditionally providing military advisors to bolster the Syrian armed forces. This commitment was reaffirmed by Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, who confirmed that Iranian military advisors remain active in Syria and will continue to do so in alignment with the Syrian government’s needs and preferences.

Iranian officials have framed the ongoing rebel assault as part of a broader conspiracy purportedly orchestrated by the United States and Israel, aiming to destabilize the region. In these discussions, General Mohammad Bagheri, the head of the Iranian armed forces, characterized the rebel offensive as “dangerous for the region,” highlighting its potential implications for security in neighboring countries.

In a concerted effort to address the situation in Syria, General Bagheri engaged in discussions with his counterparts from Iraq and Syria, along with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov. The talks underscored a collaborative approach, with all parties vowing to take necessary measures to support the Syrian army in its fight against rebel forces, as reported by Iranian state television.

The situation remains fluid as regional dynamics shift, with Iran’s involvement and support for Syria potentially escalating in response to the current offensive.
