Indian Navy Chief Highlights Threats from China and Pakistan at Annual Navy Day Press Conference

During the annual Navy Day press conference held recently, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi addressed key concerns regarding national security, particularly in relation to perceived threats from neighboring countries China and Pakistan.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized the Indian Navy’s vigilance over the growing activities of extra-regional forces in the Indian Ocean Region, particularly the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. He highlighted ongoing surveillance of PLA Navy ships, research vessels, and satellite tracking ships, indicating a proactive stance in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

Turning his attention to Pakistan, Admiral Tripathi remarked on the impressive expansion of the Pakistan Navy, which aims to grow into a fleet of 50 ships. He criticized this military buildup, stating, “They have chosen weapons over the welfare of their people.” He pointed out the increasing collaboration between Pakistan and China, revealing that many of the new warships and submarines being developed for the Pakistan Navy are supported by Chinese technology and resources. This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Pakistan Navy, particularly with the introduction of eight new submarines. However, Admiral Tripathi assured that India remains fully aware of Pakistan’s naval capabilities and is adapting its strategies accordingly to counter potential threats.

Highlighting the Indian Navy’s initiatives, Admiral Tripathi mentioned the recent Milan-24 naval exercise held in Visakhapatnam, which saw participation from over 50 countries, underscoring India’s growing influence in global maritime affairs. He also noted the commissioning of the second nuclear submarine, INS Arighaat, by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, which bolsters India’s nuclear triad and enhances the country’s deterrence capabilities.

The Admiral provided insights into India’s ongoing defense projects, revealing that 62 warships and one submarine are currently under construction. He conveyed a clear understanding of the need for an additional 31 advanced warships and submarines, which include six submarines designated under the Project-75 India. Furthermore, the acquisition of 60 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy is under consideration.

In a nod to technological advancements, Admiral Tripathi mentioned that the Navy is exploring disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and quantum computing, all aimed at enhancing operational capabilities.

He also confirmed the successful test of a missile, highlighting that relevant authorities are analyzing its trajectory, with results expected to be made available soon. As for future naval enhancements, he committed to the timely readiness of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) and expressed optimism regarding the imminent signing of deals for Rafale-Marine fighter jets and three additional Scorpene submarines.

This comprehensive briefing from Admiral Tripathi reflects India’s strategic intent to strengthen its naval capabilities while keeping a close eye on regional dynamics and ensuring national security in a challenging geopolitical environment.
