Hungarian Defence Forces Bolster Capabilities with New Leopard 2A7HU Tanks

The Hungarian Defence Forces has bolstered its military capabilities with the recent addition of four Leopard 2A7HU tanks, which will serve to reinforce the Tarczay Ervin 11th Tank Battalion. This announcement was made by the Klapka György 1st Armored Brigade via social media, indicating that the total number of Leopard 2A7HU tanks in the Hungarian fleet has now reached 30.

Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky expressed his approval of the development, emphasizing the significance of these armored vehicles in ensuring the nation’s security. He noted, “Our constantly arriving high-tech equipment continues to build our deterrent power,” showcasing the commitment of the Hungarian government to enhance the operational readiness of its military forces.

Hungary’s journey with the Leopard 2A7HU tanks began when the first units were delivered in December 2023, following a five-year contract negotiation period. The Leopard 2A7HU is a unique adaptation of the renowned German Leopard 2A7 model, specifically designed to satisfy the operational requirements of the Hungarian Defence Forces.

This advanced tank variant is armed with a 120-millimeter Rheinmetall smoothbore gun, which allows for effective engagements at distances of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). In addition to its primary weapon, it is outfitted with a 7.62-millimeter FN MAG machine gun and a 12.7-millimeter M2 heavy machine gun mounted on the roof, increasing its firepower and versatility on the battlefield.

The Leopard 2A7HU is powered by a formidable 1500-horsepower MTU MB 873 Ka-501 engine, enabling it to achieve a maximum speed of 68 kilometers (42 miles) per hour and an operational range of 500 kilometers (310 miles). Hungary has plans to procure a total of 44 Leopard 2A7HUs, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2025. These modern tanks are set to gradually phase out the aging T-72M1 models currently in service within the Hungarian military’s inventory, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s armored warfare capabilities.
