China’s Support Boosts Pakistan Navy, Heightening Tensions with India

Pakistan’s naval capabilities are under the spotlight as it embarks on an ambitious modernization drive, aiming to establish a formidable fleet of 50 ships within the next decade. This initiative has raised concerns within India, particularly as the Indian Navy’s Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has highlighted the potential implications of Pakistan’s evolving maritime strength.

Historically, the weakness of the Pakistani Navy has been well-documented. Instances such as Operation Talwar in 1999 and Operation Parakram in 2001 showcased India’s ability to impose blockades in the Arabian Sea, while the deployment of 60 warships near Pakistani waters following the Pulwama terror attack in 2019 further underscored India’s naval superiority. In response to these episodes, Pakistan is recalibrating its maritime strategy in a bid to counter India’s dominance.

A recent report sheds light on how Pakistan is bolstering its naval forces through significant acquisitions. The fleet expansion includes the introduction of Type 054A/P frigates from China, as well as the MILGEM-class corvette PNS Babur from Turkey. These advanced warships are equipped with cutting-edge radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and anti-air weaponry, thereby enhancing the operational capabilities of the Pakistan Navy.

The growing partnership with China is particularly noteworthy. Pakistan is in the process of acquiring Hangar-class submarines under a $5 billion deal, further solidifying its naval capabilities. The fleet’s modernization efforts, bolstered by Chinese technology and weaponry, aim to challenge India’s maritime dominance head-on, complicating the strategic calculations for New Delhi.

While it is clear that Pakistan’s naval strength cannot yet match the overall prowess of the Indian Navy, the emerging alliance with China presents a formidable challenge. The integration of modern submarines, advanced frigates, and unmanned systems into Pakistan’s naval strategy suggests a concerted effort to adjust the balance of power in the Arabian Sea.

In light of these developments, the Indian Navy is expected to adapt its strategies to counter the growing synergy between Pakistan and China. As the regional maritime landscape evolves, it remains crucial for India to enhance its naval capabilities to maintain its strategic edge in the face of emergent challenges.
