In a significant move to bolster housing for its defense community, Australia has announced plans to construct over 400 new homes in Townsville, Queensland. This initiative involves three contracts established between the Australian government’s military housing enterprise and local industry partners, aiming to provide “new, high quality, and affordable” housing units in what is recognized as the country’s largest garrison city.
The initiative is part of Australia’s broader New Builds Volume Leasing Program, which has set a target of renting out 100 free-standing houses, townhouses, and apartments each year for servicemembers and their families over the next five years. The new homes will be located within 30 kilometers (approximately 17 miles) of Townsville’s Lavarack Barracks, ensuring proximity to essential military facilities. Construction on the first 100 homes is projected to be completed between 2025 and 2026.
Defence Personnel and Veterans’ Affairs Minister Matt Keogh emphasized the importance of supporting military families, stating, “Australia’s Defence personnel are our most important capability, so it is vital they and their families are well supported with modern, fit for purpose housing in their local communities.” He highlighted the significance of this project within the context of the National Defence Strategy, which underscored the need for an adaptable and resilient force posture, particularly in northern Australia to enhance operational capabilities.
This announcement follows a previous commitment made in October, where the government signed off on three contracts for the construction of 550 additional houses in Garden Island, further supporting the military accommodation initiative. This ongoing investment in housing demonstrates the Australian government’s commitment to ensuring that defense personnel and their families have access to suitable accommodation as they fulfill their duties.
