US to Send Contractors to Ukraine for Advanced Weapons Maintenance

The United States is planning to deploy a “small number” of contractors to Ukraine to assist in the maintenance of advanced weaponry, including warplanes and air defense systems, according to a defense official. This move marks a significant development as Washington has been a crucial military supporter of Ukraine, committing over $60 billion in security aid since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Notably, the use of defense contractors in Ukraine has been restricted until now.

The official emphasized that these contractors will not be positioned near the front lines and will not engage in combat with Russian forces. Their primary role will be to help the Ukrainian armed forces rapidly repair and maintain U.S.-provided equipment, allowing for swift deployment back to active duty when needed. The decision to deploy contractors was described as a result of a “careful risk assessment” process.

According to the official, some of the equipment that the U.S. has sent or plans to send to Ukraine—such as F-16 fighter jets and Patriot air defense systems—requires specialized technical knowledge for effective maintenance. This acknowledgment underlines the complexity and sophistication of the military hardware involved.

In addition to the advanced air systems, the U.S. has supplied a wide array of military equipment to Ukraine, which includes air defense weapons, HIMARS rocket launchers, artillery systems, munitions, and ground vehicles like tanks.

However, the situation surrounding aid for Ukraine is complicated by the political landscape in the U.S. The prospect of Donald Trump potentially returning to the presidency has raised concerns regarding the continuity of financial and military support for Ukraine. With President Biden’s administration racing against time, efforts are in place to secure billions of dollars in assistance before the transition of power takes place in January.
