Second Taiwanese Volunteer Fighter Dies in Ukraine

Taiwanese Volunteer Killed in Ukraine Conflict: Second Casualty Reported by Foreign Ministry

Taipei, Taiwan – A second Taiwanese volunteer serving alongside Ukrainian forces has been confirmed dead, according to a statement from Taiwan’s foreign ministry on Sunday. The ministry expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased, who requested to remain anonymous.

Details surrounding the man’s death remain limited, but the foreign ministry reported that they received the news on Saturday. Taiwan’s representative office in Poland subsequently confirmed the information with Ukraine’s International Legion, which comprises foreign fighters joining the defense against Russian aggression.

The foreign ministry did not disclose additional information regarding the circumstances of his death, but Taiwanese media identified him as Wu Chung-ta. Reports indicated that Wu had returned to Ukraine in July after spending time recovering from a leg injury.

Before his departure, Wu expressed that he had the support of his family for his decision to return to the conflict. Taiwan’s legislative member Puma Shen, who serves on the parliament’s defense committee, estimated that there are currently “five to six” Taiwanese fighters in Ukraine.

This recent casualty marks the second known Taiwanese volunteer to lose their life in the ongoing conflict, with the first casualty reported in November 2022. The surge of foreign volunteers began after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for international support in defense against the Russian invasion, leading numerous individuals from around the world to join efforts in Ukraine’s military.

The situation highlights growing international involvement in the conflict as more individuals from various countries, including Taiwan, participate in the fight alongside Ukrainian troops.
