Peru’s navy is set to enhance its capabilities with a new contract awarded to Kongsberg Maritime for the supply of advanced propulsion systems for its inaugural warship under the recently established frigate program. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards modernizing the Peruvian naval fleet, which is undergoing an extensive renewal.
The comprehensive contract includes the provision of twin controllable pitch propellers, shaft lines, bearings, seals, and associated control systems. These components are integral to the design and functionality of the new frigate, ensuring superior performance and efficiency. Björn ten Eicken, Vice President – Naval at Kongsberg Maritime, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership, noting that their controllable pitch propeller technology has garnered a reputation as a trusted choice among global navies.
“The Peruvian Navy is embarking on a major fleet renewal, and we are delighted that our controllable pitch propeller technology, a popular choice for many of the world’s navies, will feature on their first frigate,” Eicken stated. He emphasized the critical role of propulsion in naval operations, asserting that Kongsberg Maritime’s product combines decades of operational experience with cutting-edge hydrodynamic advancements, ultimately delivering a propulsion system that emphasizes both efficiency and exceptional maneuverability.
The new naval vessels, designated as multipurpose frigates, are part of a cooperative effort between state-owned shipbuilder SIMA Peru and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI). The design, based on HD HHI’s HDF-3200 frigate specifications, will result in vessels measuring 417 feet (127 meters) in length, with a displacement of 3,400 tons. These frigates are expected to achieve a maximum speed of 26.5 knots, equivalent to about 30.5 miles or 49.1 kilometers per hour.
Additionally, the frigates are engineered for long-range patrol capabilities, boasting a range of 6,000 nautical miles. The Peruvian Navy anticipates the delivery of the first frigate in 2029, marking a pivotal milestone in its strategic modernization efforts. This forward-looking initiative underscores Peru’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defense and operational readiness in an increasingly complex global security environment.
