In a significant event for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, a recruitment rally conducted by the Indian Army attracted over 26,000 enthusiastic young aspirants in the border district of Poonch. This rally, held after a hiatus of five years, took place at the Advance Landing Ground in Surankote from November 8, aiming to fill a total of 352 vacancies—307 for soldier general duty and 45 for clerks and tradesmen in the Territorial Army.
The recruitment drive was open to candidates from 31 Tehsils across various districts, including Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Jammu, for soldier general duty positions. For clerks and tradesmen, candidates from the entire Jammu and Kashmir region were eligible to participate.
An official from the army recruitment office expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting the remarkable enthusiasm and readiness of the participants to serve the nation. “Over 26,000 candidates took part in the selection process during the 10-day rally,” he stated, highlighting the focus on providing employment opportunities and encouraging youth to consider careers in the armed forces.
Participants underwent a series of physical tests, including a 1.6 km run and chin-ups, along with endurance exercises, followed by medical examinations and documentation checks. According to officials, around 4,000 candidates successfully completed the ground test and qualified for the subsequent medical examination.
The local community praised the army’s initiative in organizing the recruitment drive, viewing it as a crucial step toward addressing unemployment in the border region while nurturing a sense of pride and patriotism among the youth. Syed Imtiaz Kazmi, a respected figure in Surankote, commented on the event’s significance, affirming its role in empowering local youth.
Safety protocols were strictly maintained to ensure the smooth management of the large gathering, with officials indicating that the recruitment process is projected to extend for an additional three days. This recruitment rally represents another milestone in the Indian Army’s efforts to strengthen its connection with the community and provide new opportunities in a region that has faced economic challenges.
Among the participants, many expressed their aspirations of securing positions within the armed forces, motivated by a desire to serve the nation and support their families. Mohd Asad, a first-time participant from Poonch, shared his determination, stating, “I am ready to serve the nation by joining the army.” Another aspirant, Mohd Iqbal from the Haveli area, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enlist and serve.
The successful turnout and enthusiastic participation underscore a commitment within the region’s youth to pursue careers in the military, highlighting the ongoing dialogue around employment and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
