Iran Begins Construction of First “Defensive” Tunnel in Tehran Metro Amid Rising Tensions with Israel

Iran has announced the construction of its first “defensive” tunnel within the metro network of the capital, Tehran, a development reported by state media. Jafar Tashakori, the head of the city council’s transport commission, indicated that this tunnel will connect the areas between “The Defenders of Health” station and the Imam Khomeini Hospital metro station, allowing for direct access to the medical facility.

While Tashakori confirmed that the tunnel will feature “defensive functionalities,” he did not provide specific details regarding the nature of these capabilities. The term “defense” can have various interpretations in Farsi, encompassing a wide range of meanings, from health protection—referring to doctors and nurses—as “health defenders” to police as “security defenders.”

This announcement occurs amid increasing tension between Iran and Israel. These tensions escalated following Israel’s air strikes on military targets within Iran on October 26. Israeli forces launched these strikes in retaliation for an earlier attack carried out by Tehran on October 1, which was linked to the deaths of Iran-backed militant leaders and a general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iranian officials reported that the Israeli attack resulted in the death of four soldiers and inflicted “limited damage” on radar systems. Civilian casualties were also noted, with media sources confirming at least one civilian death during the strikes.

In response to the recent military actions, Iran has declared its intention to retaliate for the October attacks, despite cautions from both the United States and Israel against escalating the conflict. The construction of the defensive tunnel within Tehran’s metro system appears to reflect a broader strategy amidst growing regional hostilities and confrontations.
