Indian troops deployed in United Nations peacekeeping operations in conflict-ridden Lebanon are reported to be safe, despite rising tensions in the region, according to assurances from the Indian Army. Lt. General Rakesh Kapoor, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, addressed concerns regarding the security of Indian UN peacekeepers stationed in the volatile areas of Lebanon, emphasizing their adherence to the UN mandate and the rigorous oversight provided by the Indian Army leadership.
In light of recent escalations near their deployment zones, Lt. General Kapoor reassured that while India does not possess the unilateral authority to initiate evacuation, robust contingency plans are actively in place to ensure the safety and potential evacuation of troops should the situation deteriorate further. Currently, around 900 Indian soldiers are part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), contributing to a larger Indian commitment to international peacekeeping efforts.
India has a historical legacy in peacekeeping, having deployed over 5,000 soldiers across ten UN missions worldwide, and has participated in 53 out of 72 UN peacekeeping operations since the program’s inception. This longstanding commitment positions India as one of the foremost contributors to UN peacekeeping forces globally. Lt. General Kapoor praised the professionalism and resilience of Indian troops who continue to serve in challenging environments with dedication and dignity.
