Fire and Fury Corps Commemorates 62nd Rezang La Day Honoring Bravery of 13 KUMAON Soldiers

Leh recently hosted a four-day commemoration to honor the 62nd Rezang La Day at the Rezang La Memorial, culminating on November 18, 2024. This event recognized the extraordinary bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers of 13 KUMAON during the Battle of Rezang La in the 1962 Indo-China War. The commemoration highlighted a pivotal moment in Indian military history, celebrating the dedication displayed by those who defended the nation resolutely, until the very end.

Activities planned for the commemoration spanned from November 15 to 18, designed to foster community spirit while paying tribute to the legacy of the courageous soldiers. The celebration began with a drawing competition for schoolchildren, who expressed their creative interpretations of themes related to Leh-Ladakh and the Indian Army. This artistic initiative was followed by a vibrant cultural program featuring local schoolchildren from the Chushul and Tangtse regions, showcasing the rich heritage and unity of the Ladakhi communities.

In a spirit of sportsmanship, a men’s and women’s cricket match was organized, with participants hailing from the Chushul and Tangtse areas. A significant highlight was the climbing of Point 5935, a peak dedicated to the memory of Major Shaitan Singh, PVC, who heroically sacrificed his life during the Battle of Rezang La. The naming of this peak serves as a lasting tribute to his indomitable courage.

The commemoration also took time to honor the Veer Naris, the widows of soldiers, highlighting their resilience and the sacrifices made by their families for the pride of the nation. The commemorative day on November 18 featured a solemn wreath-laying ceremony led by the Chief Guest, the General Officer Commanding of the Ultimate Force, alongside senior Army officials, veterans, and ex-servicemen, all united in paying respect to the fallen heroes.

Following the ceremony, there was an interactive session with ex-servicemen, allowing veterans to share their experiences, thus strengthening the bond between current service members and those who previously served. Attendees also enjoyed a film screening that vividly depicted the Battle of Rezang La, offering insights into the courage and tenacity displayed during this historic conflict.

Each event throughout the four-day commemoration served to reinforce the essential values of courage, honor, and sacrifice, which define the legacy of Rezang La and the tradition of the Indian Army. This celebration not only honors the heroes of the past but also exemplifies the Indian Army’s commitment to remembering its fallen, deepening connections with border communities, and inspiring future generations through the tales of its brave warriors.
