Croatian Government Approves $95 Million Purchase of Six Bayraktar TB2 Drones

The Croatian government has taken a significant step towards enhancing its military capabilities by approving the acquisition of six Bayraktar TB2 drones in a deal valued at $95 million. This procurement marks a strategic move aimed at bolstering the nation’s defense apparatus and reflects an evolving landscape of military requirements in Europe.

Delivery of the drones is set for 2026 and will also include a comprehensive command and control center, an initial stock of spare parts sufficient for 4,000 flight hours, as well as necessary training for personnel, according to information reported by Anadolu Agency. Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anusic emphasized that the Armed Forces of Croatia highlighted an urgent need for the armed Bayraktar TB2 system, prompting the government to expedite the procurement process. The Turkish manufacturer provided an informative offer that outlined a total package model for the drones.

The configuration of the drones features six aircraft equipped with advanced electro-optical cameras designed for reconnaissance purposes, in addition to an initial set of weapons. Anusic noted that this setup would allow for double radio coverage of the entire Croatian territory, functioning effectively in both stationary and mobile capacities.

The Bayraktar TB2 is recognized as a medium-altitude, long-endurance drone adept at multiple operational roles, including intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and attack missions. It boasts a range exceeding 150 kilometers (93.2 miles) and can operate at altitudes up to 25,000 feet (7.6 kilometers). The drone is capable of speeds reaching 120 knots (222 kilometers/138 miles per hour) and has a remarkable endurance of 27 hours alongside a payload capacity of 150 kilograms (330 pounds).

This drone purchase is part of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing Croatia’s military forces. Anusic has noted other significant defense investments, including the procurement of Leopard 2 A8 tanks. Furthermore, the Croatian parliamentary committee for defense had earlier approved an acquisition of eight HIMARS multiple rocket launchers from the United States, a deal worth nearly $290 million, which was sanctioned by the US State Department prior to the parliamentary approval.

Overall, the procurement of the Bayraktar TB2 drones signifies Croatia’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities in response to pressing security needs and reflects the changing dynamics of regional military preparedness.
