STM Introduces the NETA 300 Unmanned Underwater Vehicle

Turkish Defense Firm Unveils Advanced Unmanned Underwater Vehicle STM NETA 300

Istanbul, Turkey — In a significant advancement for Turkey’s maritime operations, defense company STM has unveiled its latest unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), the STM NETA 300. This innovative platform, designed to bolster the nation’s capabilities in marine environments, can reach depths of up to 300 meters (approximately 984 feet) and is currently undergoing thorough sea testing.

According to STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz, the primary mission for the inaugural deployment of the NETA 300 will focus on mine detection and destruction. This highlights STM’s commitment to enhancing maritime safety and security through cutting-edge technology. Güleryüz also shared future development plans for the NETA platform, which aim to expand its functionalities for more complex underwater missions, including intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare, explosive ordnance disposal, pipeline inspections, and geophysical surveillance.

The STM NETA 300 is designed with user-friendliness in mind, boasting a lightweight, modular structure of just 70 kilograms (154 pounds), making it easily transportable by a crew of two. The UUV can achieve speeds of up to 5 knots (9 kilometers or 5 miles per hour) and has an operational endurance of up to 24 hours on a single battery charge. Equipped with advanced technologies, including side-scan radar and gap-filling sonar, the NETA 300 delivers precise data to effectively detect and identify mines and mine-like objects. Furthermore, it integrates synthetic aperture sonar, enabling high-resolution scans beneficial for both military operations and civil rescue missions.

In addition to its capabilities, the STM NETA 300 is being positioned as a valuable asset not only for Turkey’s armed forces but also for allied nations. Güleryüz emphasized the vehicle’s "high export potential" among friendly nations. This comes on the heels of several recent contracts won by STM, including a deal with the Malaysian Navy for the construction of three warships, which are set to be completed within the next 3.5 years. Additionally, in 2023, STM was awarded a contract by the NATO Communications and Information Agency to modernize its intelligence infrastructure.

As Turkey continues to enhance its defense technologies, the STM NETA 300 represents a pivotal step forward in the nation’s maritime capabilities, paving the way for sophisticated underwater operations in the future.
