Goa Shipyard Limited Begins Construction of Advanced Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger for International Client

Vasco da Gama, Goa – Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has officially commenced the construction of a cutting-edge trailing suction hopper dredger (TSH) for the Jan De Nul Group, a prominent maritime infrastructure firm based in Luxembourg. The plate cutting ceremony, which symbolizes the kickoff of the shipbuilding process, took place at the GSL shipyard.

Designed as a plug-in hybrid, this state-of-the-art dredger will be equipped to operate autonomously for up to four hours, significantly reducing emissions and noise pollution. This feature is particularly advantageous for operations in densely populated regions, such as marinas, where environmental impacts are often a key concern.

The vessel will measure 79 meters in length and possess a hopper capacity of 2000 cubic meters, offering excellent maneuverability and a low environmental footprint—making it well-suited for dredging in confined areas and regions with stringent environmental regulations.

The contract for the TSH dredger was signed in June 2024, with an estimated delivery time of 24 months. Additionally, GSL has secured an option to construct a second identical vessel for the Jan De Nul Group in the future.

This project marks a significant move for GSL as it continues to diversify its offerings within the global commercial shipbuilding market. The company has established a solid reputation for delivering various vessels, including offshore patrol ships and fast interceptor boats, primarily for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The foray into dredger construction further cements GSL’s status as a leading shipbuilder in India.

Industry experts anticipate that this venture will enhance GSL’s competitiveness and innovation in shipbuilding, reflecting the growing demand for environmentally sustainable maritime solutions.
