Commander Rahul Sharma of INS Abhimanyu demonstrated exceptional bravery and tactical acumen in orchestrating the successful rescue of MV Ruen, a vessel held captive by 35 armed pirates since December 2023. The rescue operation, executed on March 16, 2024, marked a significant achievement in maritime security, executed 1400 nautical miles off the coast of Mumbai.
Under Commander Sharma’s leadership, the operation commenced with meticulous preparation and coordination across multiple agencies, including the Indian Air Force (IAF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the Airport Authority of India (AAI). His strategic prowess was on full display as he led a daring para-drop of Marine Commandos (MARCOs) from a C-17 aircraft into the Arabian Sea. This complex deployment, a first of its kind involving such a distance and a hostage situation, showcased the operational challenges and risks involved.
The precision in planning extended to gathering extensive intelligence on the pirate-controlled MV Ruen. Commander Sharma ensured his team was well-prepared, with detailed layouts of the ship that facilitated exhaustive rehearsals. This preparation was crucial for the MARCOs to familiarize themselves with the ship’s structural elements, enhancing their operational readiness.
Following the aerial deployment, Commander Sharma commanded the high-risk boarding operation of MV Ruen. He personally oversaw the division of his team into three assault groups, each tasked with securing different sections of the ship. His tactical leadership ensured a swift and effective clearance of the vessel, securing dangerous armaments including RPG rounds and AK ammunition, effectively neutralizing potential threats.
The operation culminated in the safe rescue of all 17 crew members of MV Ruen and the apprehension of all 35 pirates. The MARCOs team also gathered vital intelligence about the pirates’ operations and secured a cache of illegal arms and ammunition found on board.
Commander Rahul Sharma’s decisive actions and leadership not only neutralized a significant threat but also reinforced maritime security protocols in the Gulf of Aden, crucial for the ongoing anti-piracy operations. His courage, leadership, and commitment to securing a safe maritime environment have been instrumental in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. For his gallantry and exceptional service, Commander Sharma is strongly recommended for the award of the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry).
