Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Assumes Charge as Vice Chief of Naval Staff

Prior to assuming the role of Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Swaminathan served as Chief of Personnel at NHQ, where he made significant contributions to personnel management and policy formulation.

In a significant development for the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, AVSM, VSM, assumed charge as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff on May 1, 2024.

Stepping into his new role, the distinguished Flag Officer paid homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation by laying a floral wreath at the National War Memorial, honoring their valor and dedication.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise garnered over a distinguished naval career spanning several decades. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, he is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare.

His illustrious journey includes serving in various operational, staff, and training appointments, showcasing his leadership and strategic acumen.

A recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has held command of several key naval vessels, including missile vessels like INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, the missile corvette INS Kulish, the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. His command experience underscores his exceptional leadership and operational capabilities.

Throughout his career, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has also excelled in staff appointments, contributing significantly to training and operational safety across the Indian Navy.

He played a pivotal role in raising the Indian Naval Safety Team, overseeing operational safety across all naval verticals. Additionally, he has held key positions such as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, and Flag Officer Sea Training, where he led the Navy’s work-up organization.

With a rich educational background, Vice Admiral Swaminathan holds degrees from prestigious institutions, including a BSc degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College, London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies from Mumbai University, and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.
