India and Mongolia Strengthen Defence Ties at 12th Joint Working Group Meeting

Apart from the JWG meeting, the Indian delegation, including the Joint Secretary and the Indian Ambassador, called on Deputy Defence Minister of Mongolia, Mr. B Bayarmagnai.

The 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia took place in Ulaanbaatar on May 16-17, 2024, marking another significant step in the deepening of bilateral defence cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence, India, Shri Amitabh Prasad, and State Secretary of Ministry of Defence, Mongolia, Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj. India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Shri Atul Malhari Gotsurve, was also in attendance.

During the JWG meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries.

They reviewed the progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and identified means to further enhance cooperation in these areas. Steps were articulated to bolster this partnership, reflecting the commitment of both nations to strengthen their defence ties.

In addition to reviewing past initiatives, the meeting also provided a platform for exchanging views on the current geopolitical situation.

Shri Amitabh Prasad highlighted the potential of the capacity and capability of the Indian defence industry, emphasizing the opportunities for a fruitful partnership with the Armed Forces of Mongolia. The Mongolian delegation expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Indian industry, acknowledging the mutual benefits of growing defence ties.

Apart from the JWG meeting, the Indian delegation, including the Joint Secretary and the Indian Ambassador, called on Deputy Defence Minister of Mongolia, Mr. B Bayarmagnai.

During this meeting, bilateral cooperation issues were discussed in greater detail, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership between India and Mongolia.

The delegation also visited a training establishment in Ulaanbaatar, where they reviewed ongoing engagements and explored further opportunities for collaboration.

This visit reinforced the practical aspects of the defence cooperation, highlighting training and capacity-building as key areas of focus.

India and Mongolia share age-old historical, cultural, and civilisational ties, with both countries regarding each other as ‘Spiritual Neighbours’. In modern times, shared values such as democracy, freedom, and market economy have brought the two nations even closer.
