Chief of Royal Australian Navy Engages with Indian Counterpart

In a significant development aimed at bolstering bilateral maritime cooperation, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, embarked on an official visit to India, where he engaged in high-level discussions with Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy, at New Delhi on April 3, 2024.

The discussions centered around exploring avenues to enhance collaboration between the two navies, encompassing areas such as increased operational engagements, training exchanges, and information sharing.

During his visit, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond paid homage to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial, laying a ceremonial wreath as a mark of respect and remembrance.

He was warmly welcomed with the customary Guard of Honour presented by the Indian Navy at the South Block, New Delhi, underscoring the significance of the visit in strengthening the longstanding ties between India and Australia.

Scheduled from April 2 to April 6, 2024, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond’s itinerary includes meetings with key dignitaries such as the Chief of Defense, Chief of the Air Staff, and Defense Secretary at New Delhi.

His visit also encompasses interactions with the leadership of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, where he will engage with the respective Commanders-in-Chief and visit key naval installations.

At the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond will have the opportunity to gain insights into the operational capabilities and readiness of the Indian Navy.

Furthermore, the visit comes on the heels of the successful participation of the Royal Australian Ship HMNAS Warramunga during MILAN 24 and recently conducted maritime exercises, underscoring the deepening cooperation and interoperability between the two navies.
