Lieutenant General Kavita Sahai made history as the first female officer to lead the Army Medical Corps Centre and College in Lucknow, a position that has been held exclusively by men since the institution’s founding 74 years ago.
Honored with prestigious awards, including the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, she officially took on the roles of Commandant of the AMC Centre and College, officer-in-charge of AMC Records, and Colonel Commandant of the AMC on February 1, 2024.
Before her latest role, Sahai served as the Additional Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (HR) in the office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) in New Delhi. A graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, she joined the Army Medical Corps (AMC) on December 30, 1986.
She completed her MD in Pathology in 1994 and her Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Pathology in 1997, both from AFMC, Pune.
The General Officer also completed a two-year fellowship in Oncopathology at AIIMS, New Delhi, from 2000 to 2002, and earned a diploma in health professional education from Faimer Keele University, UK, between 2020 and 2022.
Throughout her 37-year career, Lt Gen Sahai has occupied several key positions, including Head of Department (HOD) and Professor in the department of laboratory medicine at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, Professor in the department of pathology at AFMC, and HOD and Professor in the department of laboratory medicine at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi. She has contributed to over 100 publications in both national and international journals.
In recognition of her exceptional service and her ability to excel across various domains, she received the Sena Medal on Republic Day of this year, the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2018, and the Chief Of Army Staff Commendation in 2008 and 2012. Lt Gen Sahai is married to Maj Gen Rajesh Sahai, AVSM, SM (Retd).
