An Army officer was among the five people killed in avalanches in Kashmir’s Bandipora and Ganderbal districts today.
The avalanche hit an Army installation at Sonamarg in Ganderbal district. There are no missing persons.
As of now, more than five feet snow has accumulated in the unit in Ganderbal.
In another avalanche incident, four members of a family died as their house was buried under snow in Gurez sector near Line of Control in Kashmir.
A rescue operation has been launched with the help of the police and the Army.
The army officer, Major Amit Sagar of High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), was buried under the debris of the avalanche.
An army official said one soldier had died after getting trapped under the avalanche. However, the official did not reveal the rank and name of the soldier who lost his life in the incident.
