Major Amit Deswal of the 21 Para was on Wednesday martyred in an encounter with Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militants in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. Army officials said one militant was also killed in an encounter, which took place during a combing operation undertaken by the Rashtriya Rifles and Special Forces personnel.
Major Deswal, who hailed from Haryana’s Jhajjar district, was evacuated from the encounter site after receiving a gunshot wound to the stomach, but succumbed to his injuries. Major Deswal was commissioned into the Regiment Of Artillery on June 10, 2006. After basic service, he opted for the Special Group at first, but was finally selected for the coveted Special Forces. He joined the elite unit in January 2011. He was sent to Manipur for Operation Hifazat-II in January 2016.
