The Indian government, led by the BJP has given shocks to people and firms by imposing bans in various areas. The ban was somewhere appreciated, but some raised controversies. Well, the issues were important for people’s benefit and the nation’s working. Here are some of the things that were banned after court’s orders on the grounds of having some unauthorized material or for saving something.
Maggie
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India), was in the news headlines along with nestle for its product Maggi noodles, which was banned in India after the test conducted on it was reported positive to have lead and MSG beyond normal limits. The company faced a huge loss in 12 years and led a big controversy with social media flooded with trolls and comments on the action. But recently FSSCI has reopened the gates for Maggi after testing it in its lab.
Famous NGOs
Some foreign NGOs (Non-Governmental Organization) also faced a ban from the Indian government. Green Peace, an NGO, whose license was suspended after finding discrepancies in accounts. Priya Pillai, one of the activists was also barred from travelling abroad in the case. But later, Green peace won the case and was allowed to go abroad. Later, Delhi high court allowed green peace to handle its saving accounts and given a temporary permission to access the donation made by Indian donors.
Books
The Hindus: An Alternative History, by American scholar Wendy Doniger, was taken out of the market by her publisher after orders passed by the Delhi high court alleging that few parts of the book contain some factual errors of Indian history and misrepresented Hindu mythology. The final settlement made by the petitioner and publisher was a six month period for penguin to destroy all copies of the book.
Beef
The culture of India and the place given to animals, especially cows were bolstered by banning beef in India. The Maharashtra government banned slaughter of bulls and bullocks in the starting of this year with the introduction of the bill named Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) bill after 19 years. A provision of 5 years of jail or Rs. 10,000 fine will be imposed on anybody found having beef. The decision divided the Indian population in two segments, in favor majority and minority was with ‘against’ thinking. But the matter later on got cold.
Most recent: Porns
With the ban on pornography site in India, it has become the recent point which led huge uproar. The step of banning porn sites was responded by the youth of the nation. Recently ISP (Internet Service Providers) urged the government to lift the ban from the porn sites. The reason given for the ban was that these kinds of material are the cause of crime against women. Several celebrities also responded on this issue on social networking sites.
The steps taken by the government, in all the arenas were for good cause. But the response of people is crucial for the continuation of the orders. The current government is facing various other issues like Vyapam scam, OROP implementation, etc. and these orders also make some points for the government. Making prosperity and establishing a healthy nation should be the first priority of the government.
