Inner Line Permit – Biasing or Not

The north eastern states of India usually stay in media for different causes. Most of the time the reason is related to the security and defense (military). But some other issues also create uproars in the area. These days Manipur is sharing the headlines for the imposed curfew and people protesting for the implementation of inner line permit in the state. The protest is most intensified in the Imphal district (consisting east and west division). The death of the student acted as adding gasoline to the fire and increased the demonstration and people’s involvement in the protest. This topic is crucial for SSB and can be asked in interview to check your knowledge of current affairs.

What is Inner Line Permit?

The term “Inner Line Permit” clearly defines its meaning. It divides the population of protected area of India into two groups, residential and outsiders. The system was introduced in 1873 during the British rule imposed in eastern provinces. The system results a mandatory permit which all outsiders have to get before visiting that state.

What People Want?

The people of Manipur want inner line permit to be implemented in their state. The move will make it compulsory of the non-domicile people in visiting the area to have a permit before entering the state. Currently Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland are the states where this system is under rule. There special travel documents are required for visiting. Meghalaya is also demanding for it and some news also indicated the demand of its implementation in entire north eastern area. Why Recently in News?

The issue is making place in media when a class 12th student was died when a tear gas shell hit him on his face (shot from close range) during the demonstration going on for the implementation of inner line permit on 8th July. Sources alleged that the crowd being violent leading the death of the student. This incident created more impact on the issue and these days several people were seen mourning for the student and youth were seen demonstrating even after the curfew was imposed in the area for overcoming the situation. The curfew was loosed on Sunday for some hours to allow people to buy commodities. The situation is becoming critical in the affected area as the people were still demonstrating avoiding the curfew imposed for indefinite period.

Conclusion

North eastern states of India are the crucial part of India and plays significant role in economy. Well, it also pays the most significant role in security and defense sector. The states have reported a lot of changes in recent times and are expected to show more. Well this thing depends on the way of governance along with people’s consent. Some odd elements like terrorism which resulted into ambush this year gathered more popularity to the states. Some states have shown better environment and were taken out of the AFSPA’s circumference.
