Indian Military Medals And Decorations Part Two

In the previous installment of this article we had discussed various gallantry awards (peace time and war time) given to our valiant fighters. In this article we will shed some light on the various medals given to the Indian Armed forces personnel. So, here we go.

Distinguished Service and Gallantry Medals

These medals are given by the organization (Army, Navy and Air force) to acknowledge certain special endeavours which have added to the glory of the services. These Medals are given to those who exhibit unflinching devotion towards their duties and obligations. These awards can either be given for an act of gallantry or for distinguished service to the organization, not in the face of the enemy.
  • Sena Medal: – This medal is given to those dutiful members of the Indian Army who show extraordinary courage and selflessness in carrying out their tasks. It was established by the President of India on 17th June 1960
  • Nau Sena Medal: – As the name speaks for itself, this award is given in the same lines of Sena Medal to the Personnel belonging to the Indian Navy. It signifies that the recipient is a diligent member of the organization. It was also established on 17th June 1960 by the President of India.
  • Vayu Sena Medal: – It is given to the personnel belonging to the Indian Air Force. This medal is in the same frequency as the above to medals. Both distinguished service and gallantry type efforts can be acknowledged through this medal. It was also established on 17th June 1960 by the President of India.

These medals are given to all ranks of the Indian Military (Army, Navy, Air Force and the reserve forces including nursing corps) for their indefatigable efforts to maintain the pride and honour of our nation during various operations. For, example soldiers are honoured for their contributions in operations like Operation Parakram, Operation Cactus Lilly and Operation Black Tornado etc.
  • Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal: – This is the highest award given in the category of Wartime Distinguished Service Medals. Personnel are honoured for their special contributions in various operational activities of the Military Forces.
  • Uttam Yudh Seva Medal: – This award is second in precedence in this category. This award is given to felicitate the people involved in a specific operation who have shown flagrant bravery.
  • Yudh Seva Medal: – This medal is third in precedence, given in the same lines of Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal and Uttam Yush Seva Medal.

These awards are given for the exceptional service shown during non war times, not at the battlefield.
