Importance of Listening in Communication

Importance of communication in SSB Interview

The very first test at SSB a Screening test is a nightmare for many of us. After being screened out the very first day I am sure it haunts us the most and though being a simple test it seems very tough to us.

The obvious reason is Fail to Screen In. There are several reasons for being screen out but one of the most important factor is poor Communication. Communication plays very crucial part in screening process. It definitely gives you an edge in Narration, in Discussion. Yes speaking is the front end of Communication but here I will focus on other side of communication i.e. LISTENING.
During Group discussion everyone wants to speak. Yes it’s good to participate in discussion but it is obvious that when everyone is speaking together it create ruckus and group leads to nowhere. Everyone wants to speak because everyone wants to get screened in no one wants to go home the very first day and this pushes us to Speak Speak & Speak. but what we fail to understand is Communication is two way process there has to be give and take in order to communicate well. Hence Listening is very important at G.D.

I would like to share few points which will surely help to improve your Listening.
  1. Listen Aggressively: Ask right question at the right moment. Asking the question makes the process 2 ways. It connects you with the speaker and remembers people will listen to you when first you will listen to them.
  2. Do not label the person you are speaking to:  If you label the person what happen is either you will consider him inferior or superior to you and in both way you will not give importance to his ideas and hence no scope of Communication is there.
  3. Stop wondering what to say: Most of the time we are so involved in our own thoughts that we don’t focus on what speaker is saying hence receptivity decreases. While someone is speaking we are constantly lost in our own thoughts. We are busy in framing our narration.
  4. Don’t jump to Conclusion: Listen the whole content extract whatever point you feel are important for you.

Now let’s see what difference these points can make in your SSB.

Very first day you have to face Screening Interview. As we already know Communication play vital role in Narration and Group Discussion. First of all if you are good at Listening you get more and more ideas while listening to others narration. You can get to know how many people have same theme of story as yours as a result you already have a support group and By chance if your story doesn’t match to anyone still you can have idea where majority of people are going and you can join them and improve your chances of Selection. Put it in a practical way, Suppose you are Officer of Army and you are planning for capturing a Bunker with your fellow officer. Surely there has to give and take of ideas among fellow officer. You won’t expect any Officer just boasting his own ideas and neglecting everyone’s idea. Then question arise what tends us to keep forcing our own ideas and not listening to anyone else. Answer is simple Its pressure of getting Selected so once if you remove this pressure upon yourself  Receptivity improves which in turn improves your Communication and finally a selection.

After successful Screening you will go through 2 G.D. , Group Planning so same set of rules apply…Speak and Listen and maintain good balance of Listening and accepting ideas and Speaking and adding value to group ideas.

Again at Personal interview listening to question is very important.

This are the few points which will improve your Communication and when you have a good communication there are fair chances of you of getting Screened In. Hope this ideas help you to perform better at screening and if you find this ideas worthy I invite you to my Blog and Facebook page.
