5 Years, 9 SSB Interview Attempts and Some Reflections

0
5 YEARS 9 SSB INTERVIEW ATTEMPTS
ssb ald 3
Candidates at SSB Prayagraj

No, I did not get recommended. And, if you’re looking for a success story and tips, you shouldn’t be going ahead with this article. My name is Snigdha. I have been appearing in front of the SSB(s) since December 2013, at various locations from Varanasi to Mysore, for various positions – both technical and non-technical. Today marks the 5 years anniversary from my first SSB; with an experience of 9 not-recommended attempts.

In retrospect, I stumbled upon few thoughts as realisation dawned upon me.

  1. Inspiration vs Imitation: In the first and second attempts when I was not recommended, I looked up to the recommended candidates as my idols. And somewhere without my conscious knowledge, I found myself imitating them in my subsequent attempts. But obvious, I was neither comfortable in that skin of someone else, nor was I able to justify myself. Imitation gets one nowhere because you’re not what you’re trying to fit into. Here is when inspiration helps. When you’re inspired by someone, there is a logic working within your head. You tend to see what is in them that’s not in you / that is in less amount in you. So you accept that and make efforts towards improvisation, rather than temporary imitation.
  1. Assumptions vs Reality: It is very convenient to assume from what we see from our naked eyes. But, at SSBs there is much more than what meets the eye (albeit in a positive sense). It would be very silly to assume that an obvious personality trait is what got a candidate recommended. Over the attempts over the years, I have seen people get recommended who are polar opposites. What I understood is, SSB is not a quantitative evaluation nor a Yes/No test. It is an elaborate, cumulative, qualitative assessment.

    ssb interview book
    5 Days SSB Interview

  1. A recommended candidates word is not a Gospel :: Take information, avoid opinions: Many times, even the recommended candidates are unsure of what one thing got them recommended. It might not just be “a” thing. It may be the very way they are. When anyone approaches a recommended candidate for tips, the candidate will share only what he/she thinks got them recommended which may not be the exact reason why they’re recommended. That said, I do not mean that one should not approach a recommended candidate or that a recommended candidate is clueless. What I intend is, one should know what to take and what to self-learn. So it is always good to gather information from fellow candidates, but try to avoid their perceptions and opinions, form your own, your very informed opinions.
  1. Good and Fit are relative words: As I said, I have been to many boards, I have faced many interviewing officers. Luckily for me, in almost 8 out of the 9 attempts, the IO gave me an opportunity to ask the questions I had. In the process of my intriguing questions and astounding answers from the respected men and women in uniform, I have only learnt, that the Boards are relentlessly striving to find the GOOD FIT. And Good and Fit are not independent terms. A teacher’s definition of good is different from that a sports coach’s. It is always “Good for?”, “Fit for?”
  1. Co-operation and Competition can’t co-exist: It is inhuman to compete in a co-operative environment and it is foolish to try to bring to co-operation amidst competition. Regardless, the SSBs constantly acknowledging the fact that they look at us for who we are, and bringing someone down doesn’t alleviate one’s position, ground reality is that there is inter-person competition in many of the tasks involved in SSB activities. While you might be extremely content rich, it is no game of mindreading. You need to raise your voice and show yourself up.
  1. Black and White vs. Grey: There is truth, there is a lie, and then there is an imagined reality and then an accepted imagination. If you read till here, you’re wise enough to understand what this means.
  1. Give your best before you give up – Know when to hold on and when to let go:
  • Holding On: Move ahead with maturity and sensibility. Introspect – Work – Evaluate – Introspect – Rework. Give your best before you give up.
  • Letting Go: One has to understand that there are things we might not be made for. Just not meant for. Non-selection is not organisation’s vendetta against you. As I said, they are relentlessly striving to get the best, they’d definitely not miss out on a fit candidate. Maybe you’re not made for this. That, in no way, makes you any less capable. Move ahead with maturity and sensibility. Show your hat up, that you have given your best. This is not for me and I move ahead.

    SSB Psychology Tests

The last SSB I appeared before was in March 2017. That was my 9th attempt. And, then I did not attempt any after that. Not because I was tired. But I somehow felt cluttered and congested. Like a woman possessed, I was appearing in front of boards one after the other without much scope for introspection. So I decided to take a break. I knew I was running out of time. But whatever lay ahead, I wanted to give an informed attempt for once.

So, I took a break of 2 years, kind of sorted myself and I am going ahead for the next and last attempt in March 2019. The reason I wrote this as a failure is because I did not want the next result to shadow my understanding of my 2-year long synthesis on my mind and personality.

No doubt I would remain a repeater at the board but one thing that helped me a great deal to start afresh is this book called, “My appointment with a psychologist”. It offers a wonderful unprejudiced account of the SSB and the preparation required there.

Sometimes it is important to slow it down, take a break, sit back and THINK and INTROSPECT.

To all the people out there, soldiers in their own way, Cheers and all the best.

Best,
Snigdha

Cracked SSB Interview In 14th Attempt (AIR-23)

Cracked SSB Interview In 14th Attempt (AIR-23)“Dreams are those which don’t let you sleep & if you want to live those dreams then chase your dreams”. Hello everyone, I am NEERAJ KUMAR VERMA from Mhow (Army Cantt. Area), Indore (MP). I am a Civil Engineer from MNIT, Jaipur. I have been a follower of SSBCrack for almost 6 years and wanted to share my journey to the recommendation. I want to dedicate this story to all my “REPEATER” brothers who are striving hard to achieve their goal. I want to tell you all that the day you will get recommended you will find that all those hardships which you have gone through worth it. I am from a civilian background as my father is a Govt. Clerk and mother a private teacher but I have seen the life of a defence officer living near cantt. area and found it to be different from the rest. I wanted to live that dignified and adventurous life so I decided in class 9th that I will join Indian Armed Forces. My journey started on 31 August 2012 when I went for my NDA SSB but got conference out and after that  11 conference out and 1 screened out. I have given SSB for many entries like NDA, TES, AFCAT, CDS etc. but failed in all. Every time I failed I thought to give up but then I reminded myself that I did not start my journey to give up I started to become an Officer. This was my 14th attempt on 22 July, 2018 and there were a lot of things going on in my mind.
Defence Exams and Interview Books:

Especially for repeaters: Please don’t try to show them what is required to get recommended because when we try to show them anything then we hide our own responses and try to show off. Do not think what assessor will think of you, Instead if we give them our own response it matches our thinking in every task which ultimately helps us to get recommended. “Do what you feel is right everywhere and leave rest on assessors”

Day 1: Screening Test

OIR was good and but in PPDT picture was quite hazy but I could make out it was a fire scene and I made a story on Fire tech Engineer in a factory who fights the fire due to machine fault,  keeping staff and everything safe, prepares a report on safety measures to be taken to avoid such incidents in future.

My narration was quite good and in GD everyone liked my story, I gave 2 points on which everyone agreed also nominated me to give group story. Got Screened in. Total 58 got in.

PS: OIR is very important don’t underestimate it, correct analysis & observation of picture is important for good story but narration is most imp because GTO & Psych assess you at the same time, contribute in GD as well.

ssb interview book
5 Days SSB Interview

Day 2: Psych day. Working in daily life will improve psych. Reading novels will help a lot. Practice won’t help until you work on ground to improve yourself.

TAT: I made very realistic and simple stories which initially I thought were not good enough for me but I gave my ideas freely (jo mujhe sahi laga) without thinking much for anything special. (Blank story :I wrote about my football tournament win, best experience of my life).

WAT: I wrote 56. Write your own beliefs and observations of daily life.  (So observe things in life closely and read a lot to improve sentences)

SRT: I did 51. I put myself in the situation and then solve it. Read the situation carefully and always look at the positive side of it. (Solve every situation in life considering it as SRT)

Download eBooks:

SD: Ask parents, teachers, friends opinion and your own opinion should be mix of it. It’s a confirmatory test as psych knows everything about you from TAT, WAT, SRT so he will confirm it from SD. So being honest here would help you a lot.

Day 3 &4: Personal Interview: My interview was worst of all my attempts as I couldn’t answer a lot of questions. My interview lasted for 25 mins. (approx.). I was asked question about my achievements in exams and failures in SSB. He grilled me to ask my weaknesses and I told him the efforts I am doing to improve on them.

Know everything about yourself, parents, friends, your game, your strength-weakness, your place or whatever things are related to your life.

IO: tell me basic controls, parts, and functioning of Aircraft?

Me: Sir I don’t know.

IO: Shouted and said why you came for flying when you don’t know about it?

Me: Sir I am not 100% sure so I don’t want to give any wrong answer.

Knowledge or your answer doesn’t matter what matters is your answering technique.

IO: tell me your 2 weakness?

Me: over talkative and over excited

IO: Again shouted and said do you mean it. tell me any incidents, why you think they are your weakness?

Me: Sir I talk a lot to keep myself calm(liveliness)in tensed situations and my friends say that I play football with so much excitement(passion for the game) that I suffer an injury that’s why.

SSB Psychology Tests

After I finished my interview I was sure of rejection but I thought to give GTO with good mood as single task doesn’t decide your selection.

GTO. It’s all about “JUGAAD”. Work daily to improve. Improve routine, organize own room and home, repair things at home (cycle, electric items or anything that needs Jugaad). Here good communication skills are must.

GD: My GD was good. Only participation won’t help you need to contribute (Contribution means you participate to put your point to take GD in right direction). Your own views matter a lot supported by a fact, figure, logic and current affair related to that topic.

GPE: It was average.Priorities of problems, assigning of resources, time-distance calculation, individual plan, your contribution all matters here.(Consider your daily routine tasks as a small GPE and then do it)

PGT, HGT, CT & FGT: Ideas, group contribution, and JUGAAD will do it for you. Don’t try to show GTO anything, just do what will take your group ahead and your aim should be that your whole group should get recommended to fight the war with you.

Lecturette: Mine was Average. (Practicedaily5topics) Organize your content well like Introduction, the importance of topic on a national or international level, present conditions of it, problems or challenges, solutions to problems (your own solution or views).

Individual obstacles: Do it as per a proper sequence in your mind.coast guard ssb

Day 5: Conference

I waited for about 5 mins and My chest no.36 flashed on board I entered the room

IO: asked to rate my performance in ascending order

Me: GTO, PSYCH, Interview.

IO: why interview last?

Me: sir I missed a lot of questions

IO: tell me all questions and answers?

Me: answered all

IO: if rejected here then what

Me: Engineering Services cleared, got College placement, I take classes for ES get 50000, AFCAT and CDS interview.

Then-president nodded to IO and he also nodded back. I left

Our psychologist came to declare results and gave a motivating speech.

Then he started chest no. 9,10,16,28….36 yes yes yes that’s it, it was me I did it. 37,38 were also there, tears rolled down my eyes all my failures, struggle flashed In front of my eyes and I thanked my God my parents who worked hard to support me all my life. I also want to thank Col. Nikhil Diwanji from NIKS ACADEMY, INDORE for his invaluable guidance. I have gone through medical and CPSS to get AIR 23. I will join INA on 20Dec, 2018.

The day has been marked in the memory of the launch of Operation Trident during the Indo-Pak war on 1971, and as a mark of reverence to those who were martyred in the war.

The Navy also organises a Beating Retreat and Tattoo Ceremony at Gateway of India, Mumbai on the eve of the Navy Day. The ceremony is largely focused on general public wherein the Indian Naval Band performs across venues in the city between Gateway of India and Radio Club. The operation was conducted on the night of 4–5 December when the Indian Navy launched a devastating attack on the Pakistan Naval Headquarters in Karachi. In the attack, the Indian side,  consisting of 3 Vidyut class missile boats (INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, and INS Veer) , 2 anti-submarines and a tanker, sank four Pakistani vessels and ravaged the Karachi harbour fuel fields killing over 500 Pakistani Navy personnel. The Indian side suffered no losses.

Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region.  Operation Trident was followed up with another attack by the Indian Navy, code-named Operation Python. After being surprised by the belligerence of Indian Navy by the first attack, the Pakistani side increased the surveillance along its coasts so as to identify and thwart any further offensive of the Indian Navy.

On the intervening nights of Demeber 8-9, the Indian side launched Operation Python when it sent a strike group consisting of one missile boat and two frigates that attacked a group of Pakistani vessels off the coast of Karachi who were trying to outmanoeuvre the Indin side by mixing with merchant ships. Again, India did not suffer any losses in the offensive and managed to damage Pakistani fleet tanker PNS Dacca beyond repair while causing them to lose the Kemari Oil Storage facility as well.
