Review of the AFCAT 2 2013 Written Results

Considering the tougher level of the paper it was expected that the cutoff might go down, but so down was certainly not expected. The cut-off this time is the lowest cut-off in the AFCAT history, lucky for many of us who got in. IAF has certainly raised the bar by raising the level of the question paper, but the intake remains the same considering the lower cut-offs.
Good luck to those who made it, be careful while choosing your date and venue of AFSB interview, since it’s on you to choose so make sure it doesn’t coincides with any other exam/interview which you might have in future. Those of you who didn’t make it, hard luck this time, but prepare hard for the next time, you’ll sure make it after all “Girte hain shehsawar hi maidaine jung mein”.

Individual Obstacles In Army and Airforce SSB

I.O. also know as Individual Obstacles is one of the tasks of the GTO series, generally conducted on the first day of GTO testing. Sometimes it could be conducted on the second day, depending on the weather and mood of the officer. As the name suggest this task is performed by each member of the group, individually.
The purpose of this test is to check ability, physical toughness, stamina level, courage, determination, acrophobia (fear of heights), it also checks how fast you can make choice and execute it. There are total 10 tasks and time bound is 3 min. one can repeat the task if he is able to complete all 10 obstacles before 3 min. all obstacles are marked from 1 to 10, more task a candidate complete more his marks will be. You need to maintain a good stamina level. It is not necessary to start the tasks from 1st, but it is left to the wish of the candidate where does he want to start from. Army and Navy SSB has same IO tasks but there are few differences between I.O. in army and air force selection centres.

SSB Interview Dress Code For Women Candidates

1

Dressing forms an important part of a person’s personality and especially when it comes to Interviews and such formal occasions, an appropriate dress is very necessary. SSB is one such place, where your dressing reflects your personality to some extent. Since it is a very formal occasion, hence proper care must be taken in order to wear the right dress throughout. Here are some dressing guidelines for our women aspirants who are going to appear in the SSB, for the kind of dress which can be worn. Although I have seen people coming in jeans and tees getting through and pure formals getting out, so it’s your performance that matters the most, but your dress completes your personality.

ssbinterviewbook

For Screening Day

You can wear formal trouser/jeans along with a smart shirt or a decent top or even salwar-kurta, or jeans-kurti, you can wear sport shoes or formal shoes as your wish. There is no such necessity to wear formal attire for screening but it’s better and safer since you have to appear in front of the Board members. For Psychological Tests: In this you can wear anything decent, like western or Indian as per your wish.

For GT Series

SSB Interview Dress Code For Women Candidates

It is explicitly mentioned to wear white sports kit. You can wear a white sports lower (if you are not finding one buy a black/grey sports lower, but do try hard for a white one), white polo T-shirts are best option for uppers, you can go for a tracksuit as well. Don’t forget to take a windcheater or any jacket if your SSB falls in winter time. Women are allowed to wear even white salwar along with white kurta and I have seen some wearing white shorts as well, along with white t-shirt. Get a white sport shoes and practice running in that so you are comfortable, white tennis (school PT shoes) are cheap and best, if you a shoe with some tint of other color it is acceptable.

For Interview and conference

SSB Interview Dress Code For Women Candidates

Be very particular about wearing formal attire in interview & conference. Formal can be Western or Indian. Wear light colored shirt and dark trouser if you going for a western formal, don’t wear very fancy clothes, and be simple and decent. You can wear a salwar-kurta for Indian, make sure to wear proper and normal salwar and no chudidar’s or leggings, they don’t qualify as formals, only simple salwar which are included in school dresses are formals, try to wear a simple cotton suit, with no fancy works etc. You must accompany your dress with proper formal shoes, which must be in black color, wear a black socks (in western attires), don’t go for heeled shoes, only a minimal heel is acceptable. You can put a necktie if you are wearing a western formal (optional). Even sarees are permissible. Wear the clothes in which you are comfortable. For e.g.: don’t go for Western formals if you are not habitual and comfortable in it, Interview is a long time process hence you must be comfortable in your dress.   For other purposes, mess etc.: Remember you will not be allowed in slippers outside your room, so carry a sandal or shoe which you can easily put up at fall-in time or while going for mess. Carry decent clothes which are according to the season.

Group Discussion And Your Conduct

Group Discussion And Your Conduct

Group discussion is the first task in the GT series. This is conducted in two parts, in the first part the GTO gives your group two topics and the group has to choose the topic of general acceptance, i.e. the group decides upon one topic and a discussion of about 15-20 minutes is conducted.

Your group first chooses a topic and then you tell the GTO that what topic you have chosen then He asks you to begin and you all start. In the other part the GTO gives one topic when the first discussion ends the group has to carry out a discussion of about the same duration. Group Discussion is a place where the GTO monitors your group adaptability, intelligence level, communication skills and leadership. Here he sees as to how much you are comfortable with your group, how much understanding you all have, what is your level of communication.

Group Discussion And Your Conduct

In GD GTO looks for a candidate who is not feared in speaking and keeping their point in front of others, who is able to defend his point of view with logic and reason, who is not ashamed in agreeing with others if their points are stronger than his own. He looks for a candidate who is able to carry out the discussion in a discussion like manner and is able to avoid the fish market thing, which puts up logical and intelligent points and is a good listener as well.

These are some tips which will help you in GD
  1. No matter what a person speak, whether it is against you or strictly against your view do maintain the smiling composure and never get up from your chair.
  2. Sit straight, do not slouch at the same time do not look unduly tensed or worried and sit in a comfortable manner.
  3. A little gestures are fine while putting up your point but remember a too many of them would give you a dramatic look which is a negative thing.
  4. It becomes easy as the GTO gives three leads with the topic but be sure to strictly go with one lead, do not generalize by saying that all are equal.
  5. When you feel somebody else has made a stronger point there is no harm in accepting their point, it only shows that you are adaptable.
  6. Never in any chance join hands with one other candidate and start backing up each other, a real leader considers everybody equal hence give everybody a fair chance.
  7. Help the people who have not spoken anything to speak.
  8. Give others a chance to speak, if you and only you keep on speaking all the time the GTO will never get a good chance to listen to others hence he’ll get irritated from you instead of getting happy.
  9. The GTO explicitly mentions that you do NOT have to conclude the discussion hence do not overrule his wish by trying to conclude the discussion.
  10. Generally the GTO asks you to introduce yourself before the GD begins, this happens specially in AFSB’s, he asks you to cover your name , family occupation, your hobbies interests, you marks up to Graduation, so be prepared for such and introduction.
Just be calm and think like you are discussing something with your friends, do not look at the GTO, speak confidently and maintain an audible and nice voice level, not too loud. GD is the part of opinion forming tasks hence it is important enough to perform well in this.
Good luck

The Winning Conference

Some memories are so fond… Some moments are so magical. It’s that feeling when each answer of yours in a do or die interview is bang on! I entered with a confident stance; greet the conference members and wait- wearing a bright smile.

SSB Interview Conference Experience

The Winning Conference At Conference Hall

  • President: please have a seat
  • Me: (take the seat- conscious not to fidget. then look expectedly ahead)
  • Vice president: so, Tanesha! What do you do? (Pleasant, encouraging smile)
  • Me: (half stunned) Sir, I graduated this year with a degree in Economics from Delhi University- Miranda House College. At present I’m preparing for MBA entrance- CAT and am taking coaching for the same.
  • VP: But, you’re an Economics graduate. Why didn’t you pursue Masters in the subject from DU. After all it is so prestigious.
  • Me: Yes, sir. I’m aware of that and, I wrote the entrance for MA in Eco from Delhi School of Economics but I could not clear it.
  • VP: (intimidating posture) why not? When engineers and others with non-Economics background can clear it, why not you?
  • Me: (confidently) yes sir. Perhaps they prepare for the exam very well and coach themselves for it- given the competitiveness. In my case sir, I had not studied for the same. Perhaps I was more interested in cracking the SSB. (Approving nods among members)
  • VP: So, how did you prepare for the SSB?
  • Me: sir, I spoke with people. Read blogs. Visited SSBCrack.com.
  • VP: (cutting me) (skeptical tone) Why that site? Do you think it’s a reliable source for information?
  • Me: Yes absolutely it is sir. It even provides pictorial descriptions of some GTO tasks and is quite insightful.
  • VP: Ok, in your defense of the website, to what extent is it true?
  • Me: considerably true.
  • VP: Percentage?
  • Me: 90%
  • VP: OK….. So tell me about your extracurricular at college Tanesha.
  • Me: Sir, I was the vice president of the women development cell at my college. Also I was an editor for the college magazine.
  • VP: (raising eyebrows) why were you just a vice president and why didn’t you stand for president’s post?
  • Me: sir, I was part of the organization for only a year and moreover, I did contest for the elections for president but couldn’t make it.
  • VP: Why not?
  • Me: sir, I feel my contender had an upper hand over me -given that she was a student of the teacher in-charge and had worked to the extent of overshadowing me at a major event.
  • VP: Which was?
  • Me: sir, the ‘certificate course on Women and Laws in India’ was the event and I don’t know exactly. Admittedly, I did not rise up to the occasion to take the responsibility I was supposed to boot; this girl was enterprising enough to take all credit to herself.
  • VP: so, being the Vice President, there must have been events that you conducted and would fondly remember.  How did you not feel like continuing your role in the future?
  • Me: sir, as I said I had no choice but to leave after I could not make it to the president’s post. I was not on good terms with the new comer- our ideologies were different. Also, I realize in retrospect that I was not responsible enough on my part.
  • VP: (wicked smile) did you congratulate her on her win?
  • Me: (confidently) yes sir in fact I went up to her and signed the WDC register.
  • VP: So Tanesha, you’re a blogger!
  • Me: (bright smile) yes sir!
  • VP: what do you right about?
  • Me: sir, there’s no specific genre that I restrict myself to, but I have an inclination towards life philosophy and current affairs.
  • VP: what was your most recent post about?
  • Me: sir, the one on ‘Impact of US espionage on India’.
  • VP: but China also does it!
  • Me: yes sir. I’m aware of that issue in fact I remember reading an article in ‘the Economist’ that a Chinese cellular manufacturing company ‘Huawei’ is allegedly involved in such activities. Though the brand is not very popular in India.
  • VP: So what is the solution?
  • Me: sir, this is intolerable from a moral point of view. There must be diplomatic talks and deliberations to get this to a stop.
  • VP: yes, like at UN level.
  • Me: yes sir!
  • VP: OK, so Tanesha tell me one incident in your life that you found difficult to tackle and how did you face it?
  • Me: (hate clenches) Yes sir, there are various incidents – eg. Most recently when I’d gone for recruitment for voluntary organization make a Difference; there was a group task where in the group mates were to come to a consensus.
  • VP: Not that kind of difficulty. Something which you’ve faced in your life.
  • Me: (deep breath) yes, sir. There was a problem when me and a fellow volunteer at WDC – had a fall out over. I don’t know what… (Elusive)
  • VP: C’mon, you would know!
  • Me: sir, we had differences of opinion and we used to be very good friends before we went cold towards each other. That was a difficult situation because we were part of the same ‘college group’. With such attitudes we realized that it is not a healthy relation. Eventually, things have come to be fine between us.
  • VP: she made the effort or you?
  • Me: (smiling) sir, it was mutual.
  • VP: Alright Tanesha, how was your stay here?
  • Me: sir, it was memorable. (Fondly)
  • VP: any suggestions.
  • Me: answered in interview.
  • VP: Thank you.
  • Me: Thank you.
