Hello, Warriors.

A mere 60 kilometers separates the tiny village of Asal Uttar from the Harmandir Sahib, Sikhism’s holiest shrine in Amritsar. The village itself is as unremarkable as the flat plains abutting state highway 21 that connects it to Amritsar, but just a couple of kilometers short of it lies a memorial to arguably India’s greatest military hero, Havildar Abdul Hamid.

Hamid was 20 years old when he was recruited at Varanasi into the Army. After undergoing his training at the Grenadiers Regimental Centre at Nasirabad, he was posted to 4 Grenadiers in 1955. Initially, he served in a rifle company and was then posted to a recoilless platoon. He fought in the ’62 war in Thang La, then in the North-East Frontier Province, as part of the 7 Mountain Brigade, 4 Mountain Division, and came back disappointed with the war. After ceasefire was declared his unit moved to Ambala where Abdul Hamid was appointed Company Quarter Master Havildar (CQMH) of an administration company.Abdul-Hameed-Param-Vir-Chakra

When Pakistan attacked in the Rann of Kutch area in April 1965, 4 Grenadiers was ordered to move forward and to collect their 106 RCL guns from the nearest ordnance depot. Hamid was one of the non-commissioned instructors. Due to absence of anti-tank detachment commanders, he was told to take over an antitank detachment. A very good marksman and an expert anti-tank gunner with a new anti-tank gun at his disposal, he made a big difference to the outcome of the war.

His bravery was truly described in the citation awarded to him which read:

The citation for the Param Vir Chakra awarded to him read:

COMPANY QUARTER MASTER HAVILDAR ABDUL HAMID

4 GRENADIERS (NO 2639985)

At 0800 hours on 10 September 1965 Pakistan forces launched an attack with a regiment of Patton tanks on a vital area ahead of village Cheema on the Bhikkiwind road in the Khem Karam Sector. Intense artillery shelling preceded the attack. The enemy tanks penetrated the forward position by 0900 hours. Realising the grave situation, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid who was commander of an RCL gun detachment moved out to a flanking position with his gun mounted on a jeep, under intense enemy shelling and tank fire. Taking an advantageous position, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, he sent another tank up in flames. By this time the enemy tanks in the area spotted him and brought his jeep under concentrated machine-gun and high explosive fire. Undeterred, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid kept on firing on yet another enemy tank with his recoilless gun. While doing so, he was mortally wounded by an enemy high explosive shell.

Havildar Abdul Hamid’s brave action inspired his comrades to put up a gallant fight and to beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. His complete disregard for his personal safety during the operation and his sustained acts of bravery in the face of constant enemy fire were a shining example not only to his unit but also to the whole division and were in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

The two major wars of 1965 and 1971 saw Muslim officers and men across ranks and services acquit themselves creditably in keeping with the traditions of the Indian armed forces giving the lie to the false narrative advanced prior to Partition: That their careers were best advanced by moving to Pakistan, a fact which was proven wrong by the brave hearted CQMH Abdul Hamid.

Major Dhan Singh Thapa

Hello, Warriors!

The nation has awarded 21 PVCs since Independence. Lt. Col. Thapa was among the six who were decorated alive while the rest were awarded posthumously. Chief of the Army Staff J. J. Singh has condoled the death of Lt. Col. Thapa. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son who is an Army officer.

Interestingly, (then) Major Thapa was believed to be killed in the operation against the Chinese in 1962 and his original PVC citation mentioned this fact. It was later found that he has been taken prisoner by Chinese soldiers. After his release, he resumed his military career.

Born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, Lt. Col. Thapa was commissioned in the 8 Gorkha Rifles. The Sirijap valley, north of Pangong lake in Ladakh, was considered vital for the defence of Chushul airfield. The 1/8 Gorka Rifles had outposts there to thwart any enemy encroachment into the area. One of the outposts, named Sirijap-1, was commanded by (then) Major Thapa when the Chinese attack came on October 21, 1962.Major Dhan Singh Thapa

Major Thapa and his men repulsed the first attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. But the Chinese mounted another attack in greater number after shelling the area with artillery and mortar fire. After being beaten back, the Chinese launched a third attack, which was more powerful and intense, and the Indian strength was depleted. When the post was finally over-run by the Chinese, Major Thapa jumped out of his trench and killed several intruders in hand-to-hand fighting till he was eventually overpowered.

His citation read:

Citation:

Major Dhan Singh Thapa was in command of a forward post in Ladakh. On 20 October 1962 the post was attacked by the Chinese in overwhelming strength after being subjected to intensive artillery and mortar bombardment. Under his gallant command the greatly outnumbered post repulsed the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the aggressors. The enemy attacked again in greater numbers after heavy shelling by artillery and mortar fire. Under the leadership of Major Thapa, his men repulsed this attack also with heavy losses to the enemy.

The Chinese attacked for the third time, now with tanks to support their infantry. The post had already suffered large casualties in the earlier attacks. Though considerably thinned, it held out to the last. When it was finally over-run by overwhelming numbers of Chinese, Major Thapa got out of his trench and lulled several enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand fighting before he was eventually overpowered by Chinese soldiers.

Major Thapa’s cool courage, conspicuous fighting qualities and leadership were in the highest traditions of our Army.

Story Of Captain Rajat Mishra, From NDA, IMA to IIM-A

0
Rajat Mishra

From the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehra Dun to the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Captain Rajat Mishra, 34, is an embodiment of grit and determination.

In 2004 Mishra was posted as a Captain in the Indian Army at Vadodara, when an accident during patrolling duty wrecked his life. Mishra’s patrolling vehicle collided head-on with a tractor-trolley, knocking him off. “I was operated upon and regained consciousness after 15 days and I first checked the damage and found my right arm gone. I exclaimed ‘one down but everything intact!’, and celebrated the moment with a chocolate shake,” he says. Rajat Mishra

Mishra was part of Operation Rhino in 2004 conducted in collaboration with the Bhutanese army to wipe out the insurgents. “Once you are on the front there is no place for fear. It is the responsibility and patriotism which inspires you.” Prestige of the job and pride for the nation, drove Mishra to join the Army. His dreams shattered after the accident, but his will lived. And standing by him were his mother and sister. Armed with a training from the National Defence Academy, Pune, Mishra says he learnt the gospel of life — nothing is impossible — here.

In the eight months that he spent in the Pune Military Hospital, Mishra did a rethink on life and decided to shed the olive green uniform. With a prosthetic limb, he decided to learn writing with his left hand. Within three months, he could write legibly and now he can also drive with his left hand.

“I appeared for the first time in CAT and GMAT and scored high percentage and got calls from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and IIM-A.”

After 20 days at the ISB, Mishra changed his mind. “I thought two years of academic life at IIM-A will help more in building a strong foundation for my future life.” He enrolled recently as a student of the 2009 batch at the post-graduate programme in IIM-A.

Ways to Generate Confidence

0
Ways to Generate Confidence

Confidence, a word that means a lot. Confidence is a state of mind which makes a person to go beyond limits when body says it’s over. Most of the time people find it hard to build confidence. Here we will discuss some points that, if stored in mind, then they can make a good impression on the listeners and can perform well in every task. All SSB aspirants knows that SSB crew wants some qualities in people appearing in SSB. Confidence is a thing which plays an important role in revealing your OLQs in front of them. If you have OLQs but lack confidence, then those qualities are useless. Here are five steps to remember to generate confidence in soul.

Overcome the fear of failure – The human body and mind is naturally made with fear. Fear of what? Failure. If mind perceives a failure as a lesson for the future, then gathering required confidence is not a hard thing. Getting failed is not a bad thing, but stopping your efforts and further trials after that failure is a bad thing. Just have one thing in mind, it matters nothing if I fail, I will learn something from that. This will make you a bit relax and confident too.

Always be ready To Do – Reluctance is the speed breaker of confidence. Being an armed forces aspirant, you need to be always ready for any kind of task. Just make your mind strong and active to do any task at any sort of time. Always stay ready to face any kind of situation. This makes you confident in those tasks where you will find some unexpected obstacles.Ways to Generate Confidence

Have the Power to Improvise – When the task is difficult, it requires more efforts. And harder the task, more obstacle will be encountered. And planning not always works as we prepare. So, at that time you need to make your mind to improvise and re-plan your task. This in turn shows your high confidence level. This thing is a bit difficult to inculcate, but you find every task simple and feel confidence in yourself when you get over it.

Don’t bother about the Crowd – The crowd is nothing but just some eyes staring at you. Eye contact matters a lot when it comes to the confidence building. You have to train yourself to speak and answer when people stare at you, seeking you to say something. To overcome this thing, you can do practice by speaking in front of a mirror or a couple of friends. Here I want you to know the effect of confidence over language. Some people know good English, and can write, read, speak and understand it. But crowd makes them to hesitate. This is one of the mostly faced problems of SSB aspirants. Be confident and perceive those eyes as your friends and you will feel relaxed and confident.

Nothing is taught, it needs Thrust to Initiate – No task is difficult or taught. The only thing that is difficult is initializing it. Once it starts, you find it simple and after completing it you feel how you did that. Starting with confidence makes the task half done. And if you will be afraid of starting it, you will never make it done.

Confidence is not just a word, but it is a key to unlock your personality when problem solving situations are encountered.

India on Defense Investment

0
India on Defense Investment

Defense has always been an important sector in India. India surrounds the borders which are among the most militarized areas in the world. In this situation, the defense needs to make a strong hold on India. Several times aspirants were asked recently about Rafale status and some GD topics of FDI in defense and procurement and investment policy of India have been stated. So, here we are having a gist of these few topics.

Many defense weapons have been procured from foreign nations starting from the Independence era and it is still going on. FDI in defense has made the investment much simple.

When it comes to the procurement and purchasing and investing, FDI has played an important role in defense investment. Since taking the PM’s seat, Narendra Modi has eased FDI in defense in order to make defense a favorable place of investment. Recently, the Indian government has relaxed FDI norms in defense and other major sectors. FDI in defense has been relaxed by allowing FDI up to 49% under the automatic route and further is done after approval from FIPG.

According to the Stockholm international peace research institute, India spends nearly $ 24 billion per year on its defense import, making it one among top importer of defense equipments. Currently India avails 49% FDI in the defense sector and 100% in FDI for the projects that involve the state of art  technology and need approval form cabinet committee on case to case basis.India on Defense Investment

Foreign investment has been affected a lot after the policies and steps taken by government past years. TATA and boing have announced to make parts of aircraft jointly in India. Rafale has been in news from a long time. This time also France made jet made a space in media when France’s Safran SA has shown its plans to manufacture for rafale aircraft in India. The move seems to be an outcome of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to France which led to the finalization of rafale deal by singing deal for 36 aircraft over 126 which were previously signed in the deal. The France based company was in talks with HEL for constructing 30,000 sq.m plant for Safaran engines for Dassault’s Rafales. But no reply from HAL was claimed.

Further, the company showed its reluctance in making its components with the Indian defense contractor, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Rafale, as per sources, has attracted UAE. United Arab Emirates is on the final verge of clearing Rafale deal with Dassualt. Indian defense minister Manohar parrikar has said that the rafale deal with India is in the final stages and will be cleared soon.

India is eying rafale as a tone third of its planes are older than 40 years and are required to be replaced. This is also the reason behind the manufacturing of Tejas aircrafts and making it a better option over overage aircrafts that India is currently using. Even the air force has also shown reluctance in opting Tejas, and demanded more Rafales. But Indian government rejected the demand, directed them to opt Tejas over extra rafales. As per the sources, India is planning to buy Russian helicopters having Safran engines. The company has been involved in manufacturing Airbus and some boing jets. Indian, if goes in same pace will likely join the super powers in defense strength.

INDRA and Other ARMED FORCE EXERCISE

0
Indra and other Armed Force Exercise

Indian armed forces have been continuously engaged in exercises with different nations with the aim to share experience and cooperation and exchanging various tactics. It is the topic which can be a point of SSB interview and can be a strong point in group discussions. Here we are having some major points of exercise that took place this year and can be asked in SSBs.

Recently, Indian army and Russian army conducted a military exercise named INDRA. The series of this exercise started in 2003, since then it took place many times reviving the bond between both the forces.

7th India-Russia army exercise commenced in Bikaner on 9th November. As per the sources, 250 troops of Russia from independent motorized brigade arrived in Bikaner on 7th November for the exercise. The Opening ceremony was held at Mahajan field firing ranges in Bikaner.Indra and other Armed Force Exercise

AIM – The exercise aims at training the soldiers to counter any current and future the terrorist threat under UN mandate. The exercise focused on extending and bolstering the cooperation and interoperability between both the armies.

Various missions were a part of the exercise like search and rescue, joint planning, cordon and search, tactical drills, special arms drills, etc. Yoga session was also a part of the exercise which included ‘Anulom-Vilom’, Vajrasana’, ‘Suryasana’ etc.

Well, Russia has been close to India from a long time. Especially India and Russia share a wide range of defense deals most recent being the S-400 missile system leasing of second submarine and Sukhoi spare part talks. This exercise made a strong hold on the ties between both the nations.

Apart from this, some other exercise have taken place this year, which SSB apartments are required to be aware of.

Malabar – The six day exercise took place at the Bay of Bengal, between US, India and Japan. The exercise focused on anti- submarines and surface warfare, air defense, search and rescue tactics. The exercise was started in 1992. Then, the exercise was just between India and US. Japan took a guest place and become a permanent member. This year, even after protest from China over Japan’s including. India’s destroyers, frigates, submarines and support ships and performed well in the exercise.

Indradhanush – This exercise was joint air and ground exercise between Indian air force and Royal air force. The exercise saw India’s Sukhoi and RAF’s euro fighter typhoon in Indradhanush IV in United Kingdom. C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J Hercules was for the support of Indian Sukhoi. And the Indian air force’s performance was remarkable in the exercise.

Hand in Hand – Conducted in October, the exercise held between India and China at the Kunming Military Academy, Yunnan, China, which includes 175 soldiers from Indian army and 144 from the Chinese army. The exercise is the 5th of the series, which was started in 2007. The exercise emphasized on counter terrorism and anti-insurgency and sharing experience, while disaster relief and humanitarian assistance were also a part of discussion between both the armies.

Yudh Abhyas – It is an Indo-US combined military exercise that took place at Joint Base Lewis McChord, USA in September. It was the 11th exercise of this series, which started in 2004. The Indian army, which is experienced in working in the Himalaya and constitute a major part in the UN peacekeeping force that joined US army for various training drills. The exercises involved 150 soldiers of the Indian army, 150 US soldiers and 20 national security guards. The exercise includes expert exchange, professional development workshop emphasizing on conventional and unconventional security threats, amphibious operations and disaster relief for tackling Nepal like situations.

These exercises are crucial from the point of SSB and competitive exams like CDS NDA and AFCAT. Some questions related to the exercise that can be asked could be: how Hand in Hand can improve Indo-China relations in the conflicting scenario, why china is having problems from Japan’s partnership in Malabar exercise and some directly asked questions could be asked about name of the exercise and the forces involved in the exercises etc. similar topics can be faced in GD also. So be prepared and leave your views.
