These days, Youth has become keen to join the armed forces. Well, as per the records, armed forces lack nearly 10-11,000 officers out of which about 9,000 are needed in the army. Armed forces never compromise with the quality even when they are short on quantity.

Indian armed forces have stepped to a new way to motivate youth to participate in the armed forces. On one side, print and digital media are playing an important role in igniting nationality in youth and on the other hand, some celebrities have joined armed forces in order to motivate youth toward the armed forces. If we see the Data, sports have been closer to the army than any other profession. Many celebrities belong to a military family, but those who have joined armed forces belong to sports.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni – The cricket icon of India and the captain cool, has got the place in Indian army. Territorial Army has given the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel to M. S. Dhoni. He got this rank in the parachute regiment of the Indian army. In the middle of this year, he got into the media for his two-week training for para-regiment in Agra, UP. As per the sources, he had contacted the paramilitary authorities for his initial trading. Reports also revealed that he has gone through 5 para jumps after two weeks of training.

Abhinav Bindra– Another name that got popular with M.S Dhoni in 2011 for induction in Territorial Army was Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra. He is also awarded the rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Indian army. As Dhoni was given a place in parachute regiment, Bindra joined a TA battalion of Sikh regiment. Abhinav Bindra, the champion in the 10m rifle shot and recently won a gold medal in shooting in commonwealth games 2014 held in Glasgow.

Sachin Tendulkar – Master blaster, the god of cricket has been a part of Indian Air Force making Indian armed forces closer to the youth of the nation. Sachin Tendulkar joins Indian Air Force with the rank of group captain. He became the first sportsperson to confer honorary and first person without an aviation background to receive this honour. The batsman has become the face of Indian Air Force of youth. Recently he was seen attending a 83rd Air Force day celebration in Hindon.

Kapil Dev– In 2008, Kapil Dev’s name was surfaced in the media for his entrance into Territorial Army. The cricket expert was also raised as an icon of the army. He was also awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel by the army. During the time of his appointment, the Additional director general of TA called him the brand ambassador of TA and stated that he is expecting a hike in youth’s interest in the army after Kapil Dev’s joining.

Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair – This south Indian actor, is the first and the only actor who received the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army of India. He received this rank in 2009. He has also reported for his initial training. He had gone through post commissioning, training at 122 infantry battalions of the Territorial Army in Kanpur in 2010.

Sachin Pilot – Commissioned as a lieutenant in Territorial Army, Sachin Pilot became the first union minister to get this rank. He was commissioned in TA battalion of Sikh regiment in 2012. The M.P. from Ajmer, Rajasthan cleared preliminary interview board and got recommended from SSB Bangalore. His father was a pilot in Indian Air Force and grandfather was NCO in army.

Apart for these, some army persons are also there who became celebrities during their service.

Milkha Singh – The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, who had joined Indian army and later this sprinter made India proud on international forums. The movie “Bhaag Milka Bhaag” which was based on the book “The Race of My Life” (authored by Milkha Singh and his daughter) has flashed the clear life of Milkha Singh. He was commissioned to JCO from Sepoy taking his achievement of Asian games 1958 into confederation.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore – Lieutenant Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver medal in double trap event in Athens Olympics in 2004 and became a star in India. He is the first sportsperson to win individual silver for India since 1900.

Vijay Kumar– He is the Indian shooter who came to limelight while he was serving in the army. Subedar Major Vijay Kumar grabbed the silver medal in 25mtr rapid fire pistol event in the summer Olympics 2012. He is currently serving and still getting trained to excel his shooting skills.

A vast boundary of India is covered with water bodies on either side. While the territorial security is in interest with the army, the territorial waters are safeguard by the Indian Navy. The Naval Air Arm of the Indian Navy is a branch which deals with the airborne operations including maritime patrol and direct combat.

Here are some of the aircraft used in the Navy by it’s Naval arm:

HAL Kiran:

The HAL HJT-16 Kiran is a two-seat intermediate jet trainer used by the Indian Air Force for intermediate training for pilots trained on the HPT-32 Deepak for IAF and the Navy. It is used by the Indian naval aerobatic team Sagar Pawan. The Defence Ministry is expected to place an order for 20 Hawk Mk132 aircraft with HAL in late 2015 to give the Surya Kiran dedicated aircraft. The Kiran series is currently set to be replaced by the in-development HAL HJY-36 series advanced trainers which is a much more modern alternative. Both are the product of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

BAE Hawk:

The BAE Systems Hawk is a British single-engine, jet-powered advanced trainer aircraft. It has been used in a training capacity and as a low-cost combat aircraft. The Hawk is still in production in the UK and under licence in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with over 900 Hawks sold to 18 operators around the world. It is mainly used as a trainer aircraft for the Indian Navy pilots. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and UK-headquartered BAE Systems (BAE), agreed to explore the development of a “Combat Hawk” which could even be exported to friendly foreign countries.

Sea Harrier:

British Aerospace Sea Harrier is a naval short take-off and vertical landing/vertical take-off and landing jet fighter, reconnaissance and attack

The Sea Harrier was marketed for sales abroad by UK, but by 1983 India was the only operator other than Britain. The Sea Harrier is in active use in the Indian Navy, although it will eventually be replaced by the Mikoyan MiG-29K. Sea Harriers are used to train naval aircraft handlers of the Naval Arm of the Indian Navy.

Mikoyan MiG-29K:

The MiG-29K is a Russian all-weather carrier-based multirole fighter aircraft developed by the Mikoyan design bureau. Production MiG-29Ks differ from prototypes by features such as a multi-function radar and several new cockpit displays; the adoption of HOTAS (hands-on-throttle-and-stick) controls; the integration of air-to-air missiles, along with missiles for anti-ship and anti-radar operations; and several ground/strike precision-guided weapons.

It is mainstream jet fighter with the Indian Navy fulfilling Indian requirement for a shipborne fighter following the purchase of a former Soviet aircraft carrier. It was first received by the Indian Naval Air Arm in 2009.

Meet Captain Mahabir Singh Shaurya Chakra 9 PARA (Special Forces)

Captain Mahabir Singh of 9 PARA (Special Forces) has been awarded “Shaurya Chakra” for displaying exemplary leadership, raw courage and conspicuous gallantry in face of grave personal danger and personally eliminating one hardcore terrorist in anti-terrorist operations in Samba (J&K). Captain Mahabir Singh is a resident of Gurdaspur, Punjab.

On 26 September 2013, Captain Mahabir was tasked to clear terrorists from unit lines during a Fidayeen attack. As the troops commenced clearing operations, they came under heavy small-arms and grenade fire from an adjacent building. Sensing grave threat to the entire operation and proximity of family quarters in close vicinity, Captain Mahabir, unmindful of his personal safety, charged into the building to engage the terrorists. Displaying sheer courage and exemplary field-craft, he manoeuvred to engage the terrorists at extreme close quarters. He moved from room to room, closing down their escape routes and shot dead one terrorist at point-blank range, thereby completely disorganising their will to resist. This singular action by the officer ensured safety of the entire team, prevented further collateral damage and minimised casualties during the entire operation.

India To Participate In Two Military Exercises In USA In 2016

Military exercises are the most effective way to tackle terrorism and improve bilateral ties. India had participated in innumerable exercises in 2015 and it looks forward to continue the same, come new year.

India will participate in two important military exercises in the US next year, namely Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercise and multilateral Red Flag exercise.

The decision was taken in a meeting between India’s defense minister Manohar Parrikar and US Defense Secretary Ash Carter, in Washington, DC.

The Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) is a multilateral naval exercise hosted by the US Navy and is considered as the largest international maritime warfare exercise in the world. It is conducted biennially during June and July.

Red Flag is a multilateral aerial combat training exercise hosted by the US Air Force, which will be conducted in April-May 2016. Last time India had participated in the exercise was eight years ago.

The US has also decided to participate in the International Fleet Review of the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam in February 2016.

Carter and Parrikar expressed satisfaction with the progress in the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) and decided to move forward with the agreement.

Parrikar and Carter commended positive discussions at the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Cooperation (JWGACTC), especially in the area of aircraft launch and recovery equipment (ALRE), and look forward to continued progress to be achieved at the second meeting of the JWGACTC in February 2016 in India.

They further expressed satisfaction that the Jet Engine Technology Joint Working Group (JETJWG), which met this week in Bengaluru, had concluded its Terms of Reference and had a productive discussion on cooperation in this area.

Although both the leaders kept silence on three strategic agreements – the Communications Inter-Operability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA), the LSA (Logistics Support Agreement) and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement for Geo-Spatial Cooperation (BECA).

The US wants India to sign these agreements for fully transfer of defense technology, but India is not willing to sign it, fearing the US will get access to Indian military equipment and data.

These exercises will prove to be beneficial for the upcoming threats to the territorial boundaries and any threats of terrorism will also be tackled mutually.

Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh Ashok Chakra, Lost His Life While Saving His Buddy

Based on specific intelligence, Brigade Ghataks launched a Search and Destroy Operation at General area Gurdaji of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on 24 August 2014. At 1025 hours, party noticed movement of few terrorists close to a Dhok, who opened indiscriminate fire on own troops. In the ensuring fire fight, buddy of Naik Neeraj was hit on bullet proof jacket. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Naik Neeraj crawled and extricated his buddy. A terrorist threw grenades and brought heavy fire on Naik Neeraj. In a daring act, he inched closer to the terrorist and shot him dead.

Simultaneously, the NCO was attacked by another terrorist resulting in dropping of his Rifle and the terrorist shot him in the chest. Despite grievous injuries, displaying unparalleled courage, he pounced on the terrorist, snatched his weapon and killed him in hand to hand combat. He refused to be evacuated till he became unconscious and was evacuated by helicopter to 92 Base Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh displayed raw courage and most conspicuous gallantry in personally eliminating two foreign terrorists and sacrificing his own life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

But all disasters are not wars and combat aircraft can’t fulfill the requirements of all the conditions. Here, the transport aircraft of the Air Force comes to the rescue. Be it the devastating floods of Uttarakhand or of Chennai or be it the rescue ops in Yemen, the Air Force transport aircraft has always proved itself in times of need.

Here, we bring you some of the mightiest transport aircraft of the IAF:

Embraer ERJ:

Originated in Brazil, it is used for the regional transport of VIPs.

The ERJ-145 was designed for a perceived new market for regional jet aircraft, where the increased speed, comfort and passenger appeal would outweigh the inherent fuel economy of the turboprop aircraft which were in service and in development. Apart from the IAF, it is also used by India’s Border Security Force.

There are currently 8 Embraer ERJ in service with India.

Boeing 737:

The most famous aircraft manufacturer of USA, Boeing’s planes are widely used in the IAF for VIP transport. It is a short- to medium-range twinjet narrow-body airliner. Originally developed as a shorter, lower-cost twin-engined airliner derived from Boeing’s 707 and 727, the 737 has developed into a family of ten passenger models with a capacity of 85 to 215 passengers. A re-engined and redesigned version, the 737 MAX, is set to debut in 2017.

India possesses 4 Boeing 737 in active military service.

Dornier Do 228:

Manufactured under license by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, it’s original manufacturer was German Dornier GmbH. The Dornier Do 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) utility aircraft. The HAL bought a production license and manufactured 125 aircraft for the Asian market sphere. Approximately 270 Do 228 were built at Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany and Kanpur, India. In August 2006, 127 Dornier Do 228 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service with the IAF and the Indian Coast Guard.

Antonov An-32:

The An-32 has excellent take-off characteristics in hot and high conditions, elevation suitable for use as a medium tactical military transport roles as well as commercial roles. Operating as a cargo transport over the short and medium range air routes, the An-32 is suitable for air-dropping cargo, passenger carrying, medevac, firefighting, skydiving or paratrooping roles.

Manufactured in Ukraine, apart from Ukrainian, Sri Lankan, Angola Air Forces, it is used extensively as tactical transport aircraft in the IAF.

Hawker Siddeley HS 748:

The Hawker Siddeley HS 748 is a medium-sized turboprop airliner originally designed by the British firm Avro in the late 1950s. Avro concentrated on performance, notably for STOL operations. Currently 59 aircraft in service, it is also a tactical transport aircraft in the IAF.

C-130J Super Hercules:

The Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. The Hercules family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 50 years of service, the aircraft has participated in military, civilian, and humanitarian aid operations. The Hercules has outlived several planned successor designs, most notably the Advanced Medium STOL Transport contestants. Fifteen nations including India has C-130 J Super Hercules in active service. There are currently 5 aircraft in the Indian fleet of the US’s C-130J.

Ilyushin Il-76 (Candid):

The Ilyushin’s Il-76 is used for extensive service as a commercial freighter for ramp-delivered cargo, especially for outsized or heavy items unable to be otherwise carried. It has also used as emergency response transport for civilian evacuations as well as for humanitarian/disaster relief aid around the world. Because of its ability to operate from unpaved runways, it has been useful in undeveloped areas. Specialized models have also been produced for aerial fire-fighting and zero-G training. India has 17 such USSR models in active service.

C-17 Globemaster III

Boeing had never taken a step back in conquering the air space. The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas. The C-17 carries forward the name of two previous piston-engined military cargo aircraft, the Douglas C-74 Globemaster and the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. The C-17 commonly performs strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include tactical airlift, medical evacuation, and airdrop duties.

5 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Used By Indian Armed Forces

With the advancement in technology in various fields, science has been introduced in multidirectional arenas. The race among nations has reached to such a point where human intervention has less future and mechanics will play crucial role in the war. From the era of invention of aircraft by wright brothers, the face of aircraft and its pilots have changed to a mammoth extent. Machines have become smarter and human have become more relaxed. If we talk about the armed forces, hi-tech weapons and security systems have eased human efforts and reduced life loss. Similar outcome has been observed in the Air Force with the introduction of UAVs (pilotless aircraft). This change in armed forces came with the introduction of guided missiles, which later on thought to be used again. These days airstrike’s on Syria and other IS affected areas are partly done by UAVs, which works as an observer, attacker and even in planning too.

Nishant – Made for Indian Army, this UAV was developed by DRDO’s branch, Aeronautical Development Establishment. It requires a launching system with catapult technology as it doesn’t have self-propelling ability and gets down with the help of a parachute. The Indian army has cancelled further orders of this UAV and decided to retire it.

Heron – It is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV, which is used by Indian Air Force. Developed by Israel, it has a flight time of 52 hours, but its actual time of flight depends on weight it carries and flight profile. It has some advanced features like artillery adjustment, surveillance and intelligence tasks.

Harpy – Another product of Israel, it is used by Indian armed forces. It can carry explosive as well as can destroy radar system. It can also carry out actions of suppression of enemy air defence to control and overcome air defence systems, including surface to air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery. It has a maximum speed of 185 km/hr and 500 km range of flight.

Searcher – Developed by Israel, this UAV can attain a speed of 200km/hour and can fly up to 18 hours. Indian Navy and Air Force are the users in Indian armed forces. It performs the role of reconnaissance in the armed forces.

Rustom – It is an unnamed combat air vehicle, a production of DRDO dedicated to all three services of Indian armed forces. The project is under progress and some top private players in defence field are bidding for its manufacturing deal. This UAV has come with wheels which makes its take-off and landing a bit ahead of Nishant. Its variant Rustom -2 is also under progress with more specification and durability.

Future milestones

The AURA is another production of DRDO. This UAV is under progress and is aimed to service for Indian Air Force. It will be able to have superiorities like bomb dropping, missile releasing and other attacking tasks. Its external design resembles with B-2 bomber. While UAV Pawan is also under contacts. India’s DRDO and Israeli firms are under contracts for its construction.

The Indian government has also shown its interest in the US made unnamed aircraft, Predator. While Indian Air Force has contacted US firms for Avenger, which has a flight period of 18 hours and can fly at an altitude of 50,000 ft. India’s interest and US’s support for India for induction in MTCR is a makes a way for both the nation to tie more bonds.

Situation reaction test is a test based on how you perceive a situation and how you act to solve them or tackle them in a fraction of time. It is not a university exam, where you have to fill the sheets to score more. Whatever happens, in SSB is observed in a qualitative way. So you have to drive yourself to the qualitative way rather than quantitative way. Entire SSB depends on your mental ability which governs your recommendation. SRT is a part of psychological testing in which you are given some day-to-day situation and you have to answer them in your way.

Here are some points every SSB aspirant must remember before attempting SRTs.

You are not a superman – Be a normal person and reply like a normal man. There are many situations where you will find one on one situation. You can fight there and it will show stamina and strength. But some situations appear when you are facing many opponents. There you have to use your mind and tackle the situation using tricks.
These are experience based – You need to have a wide range of experience to handle SRTs. It is impossible to experience an entire world at this age. But you are expected to have basic experience of casual life. Like what you will do when you get stuck in a lift, or how you can improvise when you want an urgent ticket in any train. Day-to-day experience is enough to tackle these SRTs.
Try to keep the response short – A candidate gets a set of 60 SRTs. It is up to the candidate’s calibre about how much he attempts. There is nothing right and nothing wrong. What the assessors want is the quality of replies, not the quantity. Candidates sometimes encounter a situation where a count of responses is more. So make the response short and put them in sequence. It is a test of your perception, not any grammar test. So focus on your response rather than grammar.
Don’t fabricate or impose response on situations– Most of the aspirants respond in fabricated way and reduces their chance of their recommendation by themselves. Be normal and mention what suits you. A thin candidate mentioning about lifting 50 kg weight is absurd. So don’t write what is not possible. And respond as per your personality and your way of thinking.
Stick to the qualities – While answering SRT, you have to commemorate the qualities that the army wants. Like don’t transfer the responsibility given to you, don’t stop your work and find new ways to complete the work or for tackling the situations, show punctuality task and time management etc.
Don’t skip any SRT – It is the most important part of the SRT test that whenever you attempt SRT, doesn’t skip any problem in between them. This shows two things, first the block mindedness of the candidates and secondly lack of response in tough situations. So be continues in SRTs. Like every question paper is set as per syllabus, similarly, SRTs are also framed as per the calibre of candidates of specific ages. All problems are answerable, what’s needed is concentration and a bit sequence of responses given.
