About IAF AFCAT Exam
AFCAT is an exam that can give you wings! All of you who have the dream of working between the sprawling jets can turn this dream into reality through this exam. Air Force Common Admission Test is a written exam conducted by Indian Air Force twice every year to induct officers in the IAF. The written exam is followed by Air Force Selection Board Interview for shortlisted candidates.
Through AFCAT you can apply for all the three branches of the IAF which are Flying Branch, Technical Branch and Ground Duty Branches. The eligibility criteria for different branches vary. Both men and women can apply for all the three branches. While for women there is short service commission only in all the three branches, for men there is Permanent as well as Short Service Commission for men. However for Flying Branch only Short Service Commission is there through AFCAT. Thus if you clear the written exam and then clear the AFSB also then you have a chance of joining the Air Force Academy.
AFCAT exam details
AFCAT exam was started in 2011 as an OMR sheet based paper. In 2019, AFCAT exam went online and many candidates attempted the AFCAT online across the country. The written exam is an exam of 2 hour duration. It consists of 100 questions and each question carries 3 marks. Fighter planes are fixed-wing military planes that are primarily used for air-to-air combat. The role of fighter aircraft in armed conflict is to establish air superiority over the battlespace. Bombers and attack planes can bomb enemy targets tactically and strategically if they have control of the airspace above a conflict.
A fighter’s essential performance characteristics include not only its weaponry but also its fast speed and manoeuvrability about the target aircraft. The competence of a combatant’s pilots, the tactical soundness of its doctrine for deploying its fighters, and the numbers and performance of those fighters all play a role in whether a combatant’s efforts to acquire air superiority succeed or fail.
Many modern fighter aircraft have secondary capabilities such as a ground attack, and other types, such as fighter-bombers, are built from the ground up to perform multiple missions. Other fighter designs, such as the interceptor, heavy fighter, and night fighter, are highly specialized while still fulfilling the primary duty of air superiority.
The Indian Air Force has many fighter aircraft such as Sukhoi 30Mk-I, MiG 29, Mirage, 2000, MiG 27, Rafale etc. Since the Indian Air Force has many fighter aircraft, some being modern and technologically advanced whereas some are old and technologically not so advanced.
So Here, we are going to discuss the IAF Rafale and Sukhoi 30 and compare both the fighter aircraft to know which one is more superior in which context.
IAF Rafale
Origin of Rafale Jet
The French military was aiming to replace their present fleets of aircraft during the final decades of the Cold War in the 1970s. France inked partnerships with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy to construct the Euro fighter Typhoon, a multirole fighter jet, to reduce development costs and earn a large profit.
Multiple issues over intellectual property rights, work share, and requirement differences caused France to abandon the agreement and start its own aircraft development programme.
The French government issued a tender in which major defence contractors were asked to showcase their technology. Dassault was granted the contract in July 1986 as part of an eight-year flight-test programme that laid the foundation for the Rafale combat jet project.

Acquisition by the Indian Air force
Following a technology demonstration in April 2011, the Indian Air Force made orders for Rafale planes in order to improve its air superiority metrics. Following many rounds of negotiations between the French and Indian governments, Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian signed an agreement on September 23, 2016. The deal called for 36 Rafales to be delivered to the Indian Air Force for €7.8 billion, with an option for another 18 Rafales to be provided.
The Indian government wants the Rafale fighter to replace their Mig-21 fleet in order to counter the latest models of Pakistani F-16s. A ceremony for the first formal handover of the Rafale was held at Dassault’s manufacturing facility in Bordeaux ahead of the Indian Air Force Day on October 8, 2019. The tail number “RB-001” was assigned to the plane to commemorate the contribution of IAF chief-designate Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria in the 2016 agreement.
IAF Sukhoi 30
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twinjet multirole air superiority fighter. It has been developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and built under licence by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). A variant of the Sukhoi Su-30, it is a heavy, all-weather, long-range fighter. Its NATO reporting name is Flanker-H.
The Rafale is a European fighter aircraft, whereas the Sukhoi 30 is a Russian creation.
The speed of the Sukhoi 30 is Mach 2 whereas Rafale has a speed of Mach 1.8.
It can carry 9,500 kg of bombs and munitions. This is more than the Sukhoi 30 MK1, which can carry loads of up to 8,000 kg.
Rafale is considered as the 4.5 generation fighter aircraft, whereas the Sukhoi 30 is the fourth-generation fighter aircraft.
Rafale can be fully used from places of higher altitude like Leh, which safeguards India from two unpeaceful countries.
Overall, every fighter aircraft has its specifications. The Rafale and Sukhoi 30 will, altogether with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, will be a game-changer for Indian air defence and national security as a whole. The different characteristics of both fighter aircraft will protect India from all the dimensions. Jai Hind!

The majority of us have seen numerous Indian officers walking around with a stick (Baton). These officers typically have higher positions. Let’s determine what kind of stick this is.
What Is A Baton?
A baton often referred to as a swagger stick, is a short, thick object that resembles a stick and is typically constructed of metal or wood. A field marshal or other such high-ranking military official typically keeps the baton and carries it as part of their uniform.
The Roman Empire is where the Swagger Stick first appeared. The Roman army’s wine crew was holding this stick at the time. But the First World War is where it first gained modern recognition. The British Army’s officers thereafter adopted the practise of always having this stick on hand. These poles bear the marking of his regiment. This stick was crafted from polished wood.
Swagger Sticks were carried by commissioned military officers in the British Army and other Commonwealth nations, particularly by the commanders of infantry regiments. People used to wear it with barracks garb as well. The Indian Army’s combat and supporting arms officers typically carry a baton, and its use dates back to the time when the British Imperial Army of India was stationed there. This baton is a representation of authority that derives its sanctity from the monarch’s sceptre. The tradition has been upheld ever since these sticks were in the possession of an officer with authority during that time. Here, his capacity for management and planning gives him authority. He ought to be allowed to run a sizable portion of the Army.
Why Do People Use Baton Sticks?
Its primary function is that an individual with such authority is an officer.
When retiring from the service, an officer hands it over to the incoming officer. Additionally, different regiments use various sticks. They can differ in colour, metal cover, or design. This stick is a requirement for the Indian Army’s uniform.

On 03 August 2022, five officers of the Indian Navy’s INAS 314 based at Naval Air Enclave, Porbandar, created history by completing the first all-women independent maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission in the North Arabian Sea onboard a Dornier 228 aircraft.
The aircraft was captained by the Mission Commander, Lt Cdr Aanchal Sharma, who had pilots, Lt Shivangi and Lt Apurva Gite, and Tactical and Sensor Officers, Lt Pooja Panda and SLt Pooja Shekhawat in her team. INAS 314 is a frontline Naval Air Squadron based at Porbandar, Gujarat and operates the state-of-the-art Dornier 228 maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The squadron is commanded by Cdr SK Goyal, a Qualified Navigation Instructor.
The women officers received months of ground training and comprehensive mission briefings in the run up to this historical sortie.
The Indian Navy has been a front-runner in driving transformation in the Armed Forces. It’s impressive and pioneering women empowerment initiatives include induction of women pilots, selection of women Air Operations Officers into the helicopter stream and conducting an all-women sailing circumnavigation expedition across the globe in 2018.
This first-of-its-kind military flying mission was, however, unique and is expected to pave the way for women officers in the aviation cadre to assume greater responsibility and aspire for more challenging roles. It perhaps marks a unique achievement for the Armed Forces that a crew of only women officers undertook an independent operational mission in a multi-crew maritime surveillance aircraft.
Many congratulations to these officers for successfully doing so and inspiring millions of women all across India and the world to break free from all shackles and achieve their dreams.
It was indeed a mission that showcased “Nari Shakti” in its real spirit.
