Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari Inaugurates Weapon System School at Begumpet, Hyderabad

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Weapon System School (WSS) at Begumpet, Hyderabad. Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff, led the ceremony, signaling a strategic enhancement in the training capabilities of the IAF.

Weapon System School

This development follows the establishment of the Weapon System (WS) Branch in 2022, a new category of officers within the IAF tasked with operating ground-based and specialist weapon systems. The WS Branch aims to consolidate operators of various defense technologies, including surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and remotely piloted aircraft, under a single unified command.

The WSS at Begumpet is set to become a crucial training hub for the WS Branch officers, providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage and utilize these advanced weapon systems. The inaugural batch of officer cadets joined the IAF Academy at Dundigal in early 2023, with their commissioning as WS branch officers slated for the end of the year. Their training regimen will be split into two stages, beginning at the IAF Academy in Dundigal and culminating at the newly established WSS in Begumpet.

This strategic move is also anticipated to yield significant cost savings for the IAF, estimated at around ₹3,400 crore, by reducing the need to train pilots for non-flying tasks.
