NIA Court Sentences Second Accused in Pakistan-Backed Espionage Case

A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has convicted Rajakbhai Kumbhar, a key figure in a defense espionage case with Pakistani ties, to rigorous imprisonment. The ruling was delivered by a Lucknow-based court in Uttar Pradesh. Kumbhar, hailing from the West Kachchh district of Gujarat, is the second individual sentenced in this high-profile case.

Under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Kumbhar received a maximum sentence of six years in prison, along with a monetary fine. The NIA confirmed that all sentences will run concurrently, but noted that an additional month of imprisonment would be imposed for each charge if Kumbhar fails to pay the fines.

The case initially came to light when the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, registered charges against another accused, Md Rashid from Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh. Rashid was found to be in contact with agents of the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), allegedly passing sensitive photographs that included images of critical military locations and Indian Army movements. These sensitive visuals were reportedly captured using his mobile device.

The NIA took over the investigation in April 2020, subsequently filing charges against Rashid in July of the same year. A supplementary chargesheet against Kumbhar was submitted in February 2021. The agency’s inquiry established that Kumbhar conspired with Rashid and ISI agents to orchestrate terrorist activities and to obscure their anti-India operations.

According to the NIA’s statement, “Rajakbhai had facilitated Rashid by providing funds in exchange for the sensitive photographs, which Rashid had sent to ISI agents,” highlighting the coordinated efforts to compromise India’s security.

This conviction underscores the ongoing battle against espionage and terrorism in the region, as authorities continue to clamp down on such nefarious activities.

Madhya Pradesh Man Complies with High Court Order Following Pro-Pakistan Slogan Incident

In a notable development stemming from a recent court ruling, Faizan, a man accused of raising pro-Pakistan slogans, visited the Misrod police station on Tuesday to fulfill the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s directive. Following specific guidelines issued by the court, Faizan saluted the national flag 21 times while chanting the slogan "Bharat Mata ki Jai.”

This act of compliance was carried out on the fourth Tuesday of the month, as mandated by the high court. Misrod police station in-charge Manish Raj Bhadoriya confirmed to the Press Trust of India (PTI) that the event was video-recorded in the presence of media representatives. A compliance report detailing Faizan’s actions will be submitted to the high court, and this activity is set to continue throughout the duration of his trial.

In an interview with PTI after the event, Faizan, also known as Faizal, expressed remorse for his previous actions, describing the creation of pro-Pakistan reels as a significant mistake. He stressed that “nobody should go against the country,” urging his friends to refrain from similar behavior.

Faizan was arrested in May under section 153B of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses statements prejudicial to national integration. The case emerged after he was recorded shouting pro-Pakistan slogans in a video, an act that authorities say threatens to promote enmity between different groups and prejudices national harmony.

Justice D.K. Paliwal of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, in an order dated October 15, emphasized the need for Faizan to develop a sense of responsibility and pride for his country, in light of his past conduct. The court’s directive aims to instill a renewed sense of patriotism in the defendant, reflecting the serious nature of his actions against national interests.

UN Chief Hopes for Strengthened India-China Relations Following Border Agreement

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed optimism for improved relations between India and China following their recent agreement on border de-escalation. This sentiment was conveyed by his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, during a daily briefing on Tuesday.

Haq stated, “We certainly welcome any positive engagement between the nations of China and India, and we hope that the process of good neighborly relations will be strengthened.” The agreement aims to bring an end to a four-year-long confrontation along the nearly 3,500-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC), which has been marked by tensions, including a fatal clash in June 2020.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on Monday that the two nations had reached an accord on patrolling arrangements that would facilitate disengagement in disputed areas along the border. Misri indicated that this agreement addresses issues that arose in 2020, when violent confrontations escalated tensions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian welcomed the agreement, noting that China views it favorably and emphasized a commitment from both sides to implement the resolutions moving forward.

The agreement is particularly significant as it comes ahead of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, attended by leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Guterres will also participate in the summit, which represents not only Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa but has recently expanded to include five additional countries.

Hope is now resting on this diplomatic breakthrough to alleviate prolonged tensions and foster a spirit of cooperation between the two neighboring giants.

Turkey Suffers Deadly Attack on Aerospace Company During Defense Expo

ISTANBUL — A terror attack targeting the headquarters of state-run Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Kahramankazan, near Ankara, resulted in at least four fatalities and 14 injuries on Wednesday. The incident occurred on the second day of Saha Expo, Turkey’s largest defense show, which runs from October 22-26.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that assailants launched the attack using explosives and firearms, with two of the attackers reportedly being killed during the assault. "We have four martyrs. We have 14 wounded. I condemn this heinous terrorist attack and wish mercy on our martyrs," said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was attending a BRICS meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan, Russia, when he received news of the attack. Putin extended his condolences to Erdogan in response.

As the violence unfolded, sirens blared near the expo venue, prompting a swift evacuation of several government and industry officials, including TAI’s general manager, Mehmet Demiroglu, who left to return to Ankara. Heightened security measures were implemented around the Turkish Airlines Flight Training Center adjacent to the exhibition hall.

Eyewitness accounts and security footage revealed that three assailants, including a woman, arrived at the TAI complex in a taxi. After detonating an explosive device, they entered the premises armed with assault rifles. Multiple gunshots were reported as Turkish security forces reacted to the assault, with helicopters surveying the area.

Mayor of Kahramankazan, Selim Cirpanoglu, confirmed the attack at the aerospace company’s location but did not provide further details. Investigators are currently working to determine the identity and motives of the attackers. Historically, various extremist groups, including Kurdish militants and the Islamic State, have carried out similar operations in Turkey.

The TAI, which is instrumental in developing both military and civilian aerospace solutions, has been key in enhancing Turkey’s capabilities in combat against militant threats. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz stated that the attack was aimed at undermining Turkey’s advances in the defense sector, emphasizing that such acts would not deter the workforce of the defense industry.

As of now, the future of the Saha Expo remains uncertain, though representatives indicated that plans may proceed as scheduled.

The incident marks a tragic day for the nation and underscores ongoing security challenges within Turkey.

Union Minister Announces Ban on All Drone Imports to Promote Domestic Manufacturing in India

India Bans Drone Imports to Boost Local Manufacturing

In a significant move to stimulate indigenous drone manufacturing, Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Ram Mohan Naidu announced on Tuesday that India has implemented a complete ban on the import of drones. Speaking at the two-day national drone summit in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, he emphasized the government’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering innovation within the country.

"The complete import ban on drones is aimed at encouraging more startups in this sector and ensuring that the benefits of manufacturing remain in India," Naidu stated. He highlighted that the Indian government wants to harness the creativity of its youth to develop drones that effectively address the nation’s unique challenges.

The aviation minister noted that the government has introduced liberalized rules for the drone ecosystem, which have already benefited 27 companies through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, backed by a substantial budget of Rs 120 crore. He expressed the need for India to significantly increase its registered drone fleet, targeting a goal of 100,000 drones, up from the current 27,000.

Naidu also pointed out the "Drone Didi" programme, which is empowering 30,000 women by training them as drone pilots for agricultural applications. He stressed the importance of women’s participation in the drone sector and praised the Prime Minister’s role as a strong advocate for drone utilization.

Looking ahead, Naidu indicated aspirations for Andhra Pradesh to become a global hub for drone manufacturing. "We are focused on ensuring that Andhra Pradesh realizes its potential as the leading drone hub in the world," he added.

Elaborating on the initiatives taken by the government, Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, explained that the regulatory environment has been significantly streamlined since the liberalization of drone rules in 2021. He elaborated on the simplified process for purchasing, operating, and owning drones, which has made it more accessible to a broader audience.

With 90% of India’s airspace designated as ‘green zones’ via the Digisky platform, Vualnam highlighted that this initiative paves the way for easier adoption of drones for various applications across the country.

The success of the PLI scheme, launched two and a half years ago and poised for expansion, was also underlined. As drone applications continue to grow, Vualnam urged startups, MSMEs, and institutions to focus on research and development in drone technology.

In response to the complexities of operating drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), the government is currently drafting new regulatory measures and welcomes public suggestions. Naidu noted that advancements in BVLOS are being closely monitored, as India aims to keep pace with global developments in drone technology.

Moreover, with 81 different types of drones certified and over 17,600 remote pilot certificates issued, enthusiasm for the drone sector is on the rise. The national summit, featuring drone hackathons and exhibitions, is expected to welcome 1,711 delegates and over 1,300 visitors, further highlighting the growing interest in India’s evolving drone landscape.

Private Paramilitary Organization Enhances Ukrainian Tank Defense with Steel Screens Amid Ongoing Drone Threats

In a significant development for Ukraine’s military capabilities, the private paramilitary support organization, Steel Front, has commenced the integration of advanced 430-kilogram steel grid screens into Ukrainian Leopard main battle tanks. This innovative defense measure aims to protect these critical vehicles from the increasing threats posed by first-person view (FPV) unmanned aerial systems, commonly used by Russian forces for drone attacks since the onset of the invasion in 2022.

The FPV technology allows drone operators to use video-based piloting systems, typically worn on headgear, to maneuver drones for surveillance and direct attacks on military hardware. Recognizing the urgent need for enhanced protection, Steel Front’s initiative comes in response to the persistent risks to ground-based military platforms.

According to Steel Front, the grid screens, sourced from Ukrainian mining conglomerate Metinvest, represent a cost-effective solution, priced at $20,000—approximately 0.03% of the value of a Leopard tank. Remarkably, these screens are being provided for free to support the Ukrainian military’s operational missions.

The steel grid screens are not limited to the Leopard tanks; they are also being fitted to several other military vehicles currently in service, including Soviet-era T-64 and T-72 tanks, American M1 Abrams tanks, and Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Multiple repair bases are equipped with hundreds of these screens, enabling rapid integration into frontline vehicles—a process that requires about 10 to 12 personnel and takes approximately 12 hours.

Olexander Myronenko, Chief Operating Officer of Metinvest Group, emphasized that the primary objective of these screens is to enhance the survivability of military equipment without compromising its operational efficiency, crew safety, or maneuverability. “The survivability of the equipment increases by 30-40%. In real cases on the battlefield, vehicles equipped with our screens have allowed crews to survive attacks unharmed, facilitating their safe evacuation and subsequent recovery of the vehicles,” he stated.

Metinvest, led by Ukrainian businessman and Steel Front head Rinat Akhmetov, initiated the production of these steel screens in May as part of its ongoing support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Previous contributions from Metinvest include the development of decoy weapons designed to mislead Russian forces and distract them from attacking actual military assets.

In July 2024, Metinvest also unveiled a counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) kit compatible with Kyiv’s Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, further enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The company’s commitment to supporting frontline operations continued with the recent inauguration of an underground medical center assembled by Metinvest for military personnel engaged in the ongoing conflict.

As drone warfare continues to play a critical role in the Ukraine conflict, initiatives like the integration of these steel grid screens into armored vehicles represent a proactive approach to safeguarding military assets and personnel in the face of evolving battlefield threats.

US Commits to Strengthening Ties with India, Brazil, and South Africa Amid BRICS Summit

In a recent media briefing, US Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to fostering a strong and positive relationship with India, Brazil, and South Africa. Patel emphasized that the US engages bilaterally with these nations across various key areas, as it aims to establish broader coalitions to achieve shared global objectives.

Patel addressed inquiries regarding the ongoing 16th BRICS Summit, currently being held in Kazan, Russia, stating, "We believe all countries are sovereign and have the right to make their own choices about international partnerships." He reiterated the US approach to foreign policy, focusing on collaboration with global partners through investments and deepened partnerships.

During the briefing, Patel also highlighted Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s ongoing efforts to engage with BRICS nations, underscoring the importance of maintaining strong ties with Brazil, South Africa, and India. He noted that these relationships will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by China’s growing influence, with a commitment to managing competition responsibly.

As the world watches the BRICS Summit themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," Patel commented on the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He clarified that decisions regarding scheduling are at the discretion of the Secretary-General and his team but reinforced the UN’s critical role in holding Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine.

BRICS, initially formed by Russia, India, and China in 2006, was later formalized with the inclusion of South Africa in 2010. The group has recently expanded to include five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, signaling a shift in global geopolitical dynamics.

As the summit continues, the US emphasizes its commitment to responsible diplomacy and collaboration with partners to address pressing global challenges, fostering a more interconnected and cooperative international community.
