Golden Tips for Lecturette

1
Golden Tips for Lecturette in SSB Interview
Lecturette is a task from the Group Testing/GTO series. In this a candidate is asked to deliver a short talk on any one of the topic given to him/her out of the four topics. The GTO has as much number of cards as there are candidates in a group. Each card has four topics written on it. Each candidate is expected to pick up one card and give a short talk of about 3 minutes on any one of the given topics.

The first candidate as per numerical sequence will come and pick up one card, go a little away from the group, prepare for a maximum time of 3 minutes or less and when ready can come back and return the card to the GTO and speak for maximum three minutes. As soon as the first candidate is ready the second one can come pick up the card and start preparing.
As soon as two and half minutes are over the GTO will a ring a bell. This indicates that the candidate must wind up soon. After three minutes GTO rings two bells, with this the first candidate sits down and second stands up.

Golden Tips for Lecturette

What is seen through Lecturette

  •  Self Confidence.
  • Ability to influence group.
  • Power of expression.
  • Clarity of thoughts.
  • Determination to deliver under stress.
  • General Awareness.
  • Courage to speak in front of people.
  • Command and power in your speaking style.

Tips for Lecturette Preparation

  • Start practicing to speak in English.
  • Speak with your friends, family members in English or talk to yourself only!
  • Read newspapers and increase your general awareness about the most common things which could be asked also which are of national and international importance.
  • Take sample topics like UNO, Indo-Pak relations etc. and give yourself a preparation time of three minutes, then mark with a clock or take anybody’s help to monitor three minutes time and give a lecture on your chosen topic.
  • If you feel shy in giving lecture in front of any family member, then simply stand in front of the mirror and speak, trust me that help a lot!
  • The topics given will be of different levels, like one will be of really high level, the other being slightly lower and so on. So choose your topic wisely.
  • Choose only the topic you are well aware and conversant with, choosing a high level topic will not impress anybody if you’ll not speak well on it.
  • Maintain a good posture while speaking, do not slouch or lean on the podium.
  • Do not look unduly worried; remember it is only three minutes it will pass away 😉
  • While lecturette the allotted three minutes seem to be the longest three minutes of our life, so speak slowly and clearly.
  • Never look at the GTO while speaking.
  • Make an eye contact with your friends sitting there; speak as if you are teaching them some topic.
  • Divide your content so you’ll find easy to speak, keep your mind running all the time you are speaking.
  • Do not use your hands while speaking.
  • Do not exceed your time and also do not finish very fast.

Bottom-Line

Lecturette is a test of your expressions and whether you are good in public speaking or not. Of course you’ll speak well only if you know about a certain topic. So improve your English, improve your General Awareness and you’ll feel lecturette a cakewalk.

All About Military Planning Exercise [Group Planning Exercise]
Group planning exercise [GPE] or Military Planning Exercise [MPE] is done to check the reaction of candidates when put under a series of stressful situation, in which decision making ability and quick reactions of a candidate is checked.

Given below is what happens in the GPE/MPE.

  • GTO explains the candidates a model on wooden plank, at the end of explanation candidates are permitted to ask any question.
  • Now GTO reads a story from the card, pay attention while he reads this.
  • Now after reading the story GTO allows each candidate to read story for five minutes from story cards placed on their chairs & co-relate it with the model. Make mental picture of everything because after five minutes these story cards are taken away from you.
  • Now candidates are asked to write their own solution to various problems on a sheet of paper. Time allowed is ten minutes.
  • After ten minutes the writing sheet is taken away and the group is expected to discuss and arrive at a common plan for the problem and then nominate a person to say the group plan to the GTO.

What is Officers’ Intelligence Rating Test

Points to be kept in mind

  • Identify the problems and list them in priority you would like to solve them.
  • Divide the groups logically, i.e. send more people in more serious problem and you should always go in the most serious problem which you have ranked first.
  • In solutions you should also make rough calculations of the distance and time it’ll take to reach there.
  • After solving problems also write that you’ll all gather at some point and proceed for the work you were actually doing.
  • In discussion be prepared for a heated discussion but do not lose your temper.
  • Try to initiate the discussion if not possible then at least enter the discussion early.
  • Cooperate with others and give fair chance to everybody to express their solution.
  • Do not generalize by saying that all problems are equally important.
  • If others oppose your view do not get discouraged, however if you find someone giving a better solution do not hesitate to agree.
  • Do not use your arms too much, keep a smile on your face, do not get excited, do not get up from your chair.
  • Do not look at the GTO.

Structure of GPE problems

Generally there are four problems given in GPE. One is of a serious nature which involves immediate reaction or is costing more life; such problem must be assigned first priority. Second kind of problem is also of serious nature and has some time left to solve it, assign them second priority; third problem is comparatively less serious. Also there will be one silly problem, assign it least priority.

Sample GPE with Solution

Details:
You are a group of students (as many as in the group) of Shyamgarh college returning from Dinapur after winning the Dinapur District Volley Ball Championship. The victory celebrations in your college are to start at 7.30 PM. As you mini -bus stopped at the petrol pump – cum – garage to get the headlights of the minibus repaired, you saw the attendant lying in a pool of blood. He told you that some anti – social elements had beaten him up and left him dead before looting all the cash and cutting off the telephone wires. He had managed to overhear their conversation. They planned to exchange large consignment of drugs in return for Arms from a foreigner near the Rock at 6.45 PM. They had also removed the fish plates of both railway tracks on the bridge. You know that an express train crosses the bridge at 6.30 PM. Also two of their men were hiding near the ferry to kill Tota Ram of Badli Village who was a police informer. The ferry has a motor boat with a speed of 20 Kmph which the two men have planned to use for their escape later. After telling this the pump attendant falls unconscious. Just then one of your friends comes running from the mini- bus and tells you that he has to take the mini – bus back to the office of Dinapur College where your Silver Trophy and the medals have been left behind. The time now is 5.30 PM. What will you do?

Sample Solution for Group Planning Exercise

Take that you are a group of 9 people.
  1. I will first give first-aid to the injured attendant (Since we are coming from a game tournament we are likely to have first aid to stop bleeding). Then I’ll send the injured along with my two group mates to Shyamgarh District in the minibus. They will admit him to the hospital and then one of them will inform police about the whole incidence. They will take about 20 minutes to reach there.
  2. Next I along with my two other friends will go to the railway fish plate site, by taking any motor vehicle from petrol pump, where one of us will go to the railway authority at Dinapur railway station and inform them about the fish plate removal (Can go again by taking lift from somebody or by any motor vehicle), will reach there in about 35 minutes. Other two will stay at the fish plate site with red cloth to avoid any danger.
  3. I’ll send three people to the coast guard, they will take a motor vehicle and go there and help the coast guards to go to the rock and stop the act which they are going to do, can reach to the coast guards in about 40 minutes and help them in further investigation.
  4. I’ll send the remaining one person to the Badli village, he will inform Tota Ram about the danger to his life and then he will go along with Tota Ram to inform police. Time allowing we will go to Dinapur and collect the medals otherwise we will do it some other time. In this way we all will assemble again at the petrol pump at around 7:00 pm and then proceed for celebrations in our college in our mini bus. In this way I’ll solve all the problems.

Breaking the Labyrinth of SSB Screening Test

0
PPDT test tips

Screening in SSB is a very important and peculiar exercise. You can say that it’s simply difficult! This is so because your entry and further assessment depend on your performance in the screening. That is if you get through the screening then only you will be qualified to stay for further days and for further assessment.

Breaking the Labyrinth of Screening Test

I have seen people working hard for their GTO’s, Psychological, Interview etc. but they pay little attention to the preparation of screening tests. As mentioned earlier, it’s important to qualify for this test hence you need to be well prepared for this test. Here I’ll be discussing the Screening test i.e. OIR & PPDT.   OIR (Officer’s Intelligence Rating Test) is a fairly simple test in which you are supposed to answer questions of verbal and nonverbal reasoning within a set time span. The number of questions ranges from 30-60 & accordingly time is given. You can practice questions on:

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Sentence completion
  • Analogies (Verbal & Non-verbal)
  • Cubes & Dices
  • Series completion etc.
Breaking the Labyrinth of Screening Test

One best book for preparing Reasoning or OIR and PPDT book by SSBCrack. This book will be beneficial for preparing to reason for any exam. Next comes the PPDT (Picture Perception& Description Test). In this, a hazy picture is shown and candidates are required to write the characters they see, their mood, age & sex and develop a story around the picture. They are also supposed to write the action of their story.

The total time given is 4 minutes. This process is followed by the discussion in which all the group members are made to sit in a semi-circle in front of three assessors of the board and one by one tell their story, then a time of around 2 minutes is given to arrive at a common story and elect a member from the group to say the story in front of assessors. OIR is easy and most candidates pass in it its PPDT which becomes the cause of rejection. So here are few common mistakes and tips to do well in PPDT.

oir test and ppdt

Mistakes Normally Done During Screening

  • Many candidates find PPDT a very confusing exercise. It is indeed pressurizing because the group consists of a large number of candidates (16-18) and also there are three assessors present so many candidates can’t utter a word.
  • Some candidates speak their story well but don’t take part in the discussion.
  • Whereas some candidates dominate the discussion and do not let others speak.
  • Too many hand gestures & shouting are a big turn off.
TAT ebook part 1 ssbcrack 324x324 1

Winning in the PPDT

  • Wear an appropriate dress, neither too formal nor too casual, but a decent one, (Girls avoid makeup and boys Spikes and other hairstyles) be simple and sober.
  • When done with writing a break of five minutes is given, keep on repeating your story in your mind and think how you will speak in front of everybody.
  • Beat the nervousness, others are humans they won’t eat you or harm you, be calm and composed, eat a mint and offer the same to your group mates (will help in Discussion 😉 )
  • While narrating your story speak firmly and in a good tone, look only at the other candidates and never towards the assessors. Try practicing at home in front of mirror or family.
  • Stick to English and English only.
  • In discussion try to initiate the discussion, if you couldn’t then try being in the first three speakers.
  • In discussion speak in an audible way, when a fish market is being created DO NOT SPEAK A WORD. Speak only when others listening, you are there for a discussion and not an argument.
  • If you find somebody else’s story better then definitely support it by saying that ‘I think chest Number __ story is good and most relevant to the picture’.
  • Don’t try to become the dada of the group, you are not supposed to dominate others, let everybody speak and never on any cost stand up or lean forward as if you are going to fight in a discussion. Maintain a calm posture and give logical reasons for your arguments.
  • Ask politely to others that you want to give the group story, if somebody you don’t like gives the group story then no need to make a fuss. Let him/her speak. You may sit quietly and look unaffected.
  • If nobody is agreeing with you on any of your suggestions then too don’t appear disturbed or affected you must accept other people’s views with an open heart.
  • Most Important- It is just a test and not a war & you have gone there to become officer so behave like one!!

Keeping the above tips and tricks in mind I am sure you’ll definitely be able to break the maze of screening. Prepare well, be real and do well.

7 Common SSB Interview Questions Asked By the Interviewing Officer

9
common ssb interview questions and answer

Interview is a very important part of your SSB. Your performance in interview mostly is responsible whether you make it or not. IO has different ways of testing whether the person is fit enough for being an officer or not and some questions he asks are his pet yet they confuse the candidates and they generally go with the flow and answer something which dismisses their chances of selection. Here are a few such SSB Interview questions along with their suggested answer.

Q) Why do you want to join Defense Forces?

A) Now you may tell the real reason because definitely a defense aspirant has a solid reason behind joining the defense forces, that reason may be patriotism, love for aero planes, ships, guns, craze for uniform, wish for an adventurous life or any other. Now one thing to be noted here is that boys, except for those giving interview for an entry after 10+2, should not say things like ‘Sir it was my childhood dream’ or ‘I always wanted to do this only’, otherwise IO might ask you that dude where were you after class 12th?

Q) What if you do not get recommended this time?

A) You have to sweetly and simply say that ‘Sir I’ll try next time again’. Now he may counter you by saying that if you do not make into defense then what? Here you have to show your chipku-pana for defense, you have to say that sir I’ll work very hard and make it, or I have not thought anything as yet except defense.

spot_img

Q) Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?(And for the obvious answer No-Why you do not have)

A) Well this is your call guys & girls but if you say yes for this then be ready for a lot of counter questions and more counter questions IO asks regarding your personal life more you are likely to reveal yourself and I believe down the line we are not perfect. So to avoid any mishap simply say NO, if he asks why then you can say that I have not yet felt anything like this for anybody yet.

Q) What is your belief of marriage? (Love/Arranged)

A) Please don’t act smart (actually foolish) by giving a kiddish reply that ‘I don’t believe in marriage’ or ‘I have not yet thought about it’. IO expects you to be grown up at this age (Graduation people) . You can say that you believe in both kinds of marriages but the person you are getting married to should be acceptable to everybody in your family. Hence in case of Love marriage your parents should agree to that guy/girl & in case of arrange marriage you should agree.

Q) Do you drink/booze?

A)  Aha now that’s a catchy one, for boys especially if you are going for UES or anything above college level then IO knows that most of you would have done at least once. So say the truth, if you do then tell that yes sir I have done it once or twice and if you don’t then tell I don’t. For girls, well you can say the truth as well there is no discrimination. Whatever you say be ready for counter questions if you are saying yes or sometimes etc. Saying a NO saves you of unnecessary questions 😉

spot_img

Q) Why did you fail in previous SSB attempt (for repeaters)?

A)  Tell the truth what you feel, don’t blame the SSB that I did good and they didn’t take me or I don’t know, this gives a negative impression about you. You can say that I was not prepared well Sir in (say a particular thing) like psychological part. You can add up by saying that but Sir I have prepared well this time.

Q) Did you do any special preparation for SSB?

A) Of course you did! So tell him that yes sir I prepared for SSB from various sources like reading books on current affairs, reading newspapers, taking tips from websites especially dedicated for SSB like SSBCrack 😉

In short you have to make him feel that you have worked very hard for your SSB.

Bottom-line:

You have to keep in mind that IO sitting in front of you is much more smarter than you perhaps that is why he sitting there. Also IO is fairly senior officer who has got kids of almost of your age, he knows what and how you think! You have got to be cautious about being over friendly with the IO, they are trained to smile and be polite so that you may speak as much as you can. But remember he is not your friend and thus you don’t have to treat him like that, at the end of the day he is responsible whether you make it or not, hence you have to very formal, polite and control your tongue
