Thematic Apperception Test or TAT

2

Thematic Apperception Test or TAT is the first test in SSB Psychological test series. It is the most effective way of getting the personality of a person. The pictures shown to candidate stimulate their thought process and he may reveal a many of his hidden qualities. The real intention of this test is to give an appreciation of you without being conscious of it.

TAT is a projection of our thoughts/imaginations, that a picture is shown to the candidate by a projector and the candidate are asked to write down a story that comes to their mind.  In this it is not necessary to note down the age, sex, mood etc like as PPDT.  But the TAT story should consist of a hero of same age and sex and a story with a positive ending.  Like this we have to write 11 stories for various slides of pictures while the last one is the empty slide.

The pictures shown to the candidates are of various real life situations.  So we have to choose the hero of the same age and sex.  If there is no hero or central character in the story then create a central character of the same age and sex.

Essentials Of a TAT Story

  • A hero or a heroine: Every story must have a hero or a heroine around whom the plot of the story revolves. It is always better to select who has the same age and sex of you.
  • Secondary Characters: They form the part of the story or may help the hero in a situation.
  • Plot of the Story: Your story must have a strong theme for your story. The hero must face every difficulty and there should be a introduction, Main Body and Conclusion for your story. Your theme should never be anti-national, anti-social.

Tips to Tackle TAT

  • Listen to the Psychologist well and follow his instructions while he is explaining the task.
  • Observe the picture carefully. Some pictures may be really hazy. The candidate must try to observe each scene to form a brief idea of the situation.
  • You must think of the past and future of the situation shown in the picture and should incorporate it in your story to make it perfect.
  • The theme should be a simple one but it should be interesting,. You must try to write whatever thought that comes to your mind. Be natural in TAT. But your story should never be pessimistic and it should be vibrant of optimism.
  • Always try to write story in past tense.
  • Do not let the result of the story happen in future. Conclude the story by giving an optimistic ending.
  • The story should neither be lengthy nor be too short. A story of 10-12 lines will be enough as you have to write within allotted time.
  • Write in simple language and your handwriting must be legible.
  • You have to race against time in this test. You have to write the story within 3 and half minutes. It is not acceptable if you leave a story although that rarely happens.
  • You are warned that you should never write memorized stories at SSB as it would be easily detected by the Psychologist and it will surely reduce your chances of getting recommended.
  • The plot of the story should be simple and do not involve yourself in complicated situations as you have just three and half minutes for writing a story.

Practice for TAT

Always keep a notebook, a wristwatch and a pen wherever you travel. You can see a number of people engaged in a number of different activities like reading, Working hard to make both ends meet, Telephoning, Chatting with each other etc. Try to think of their background and note it on the notebook. Note particulars like their age, sex, present state of mind etc. Then try to write a story based on their conclusions about their past, present and future and see that you are able to write it within allotted time( 3 Minutes). This will definitely improve your skills. But take care that you have to write the first thought that comes to your mind. Then analyse yourself that-

  • Your story is natural and has a strong theme.
  • Your hero has the same age, sex and other particulars like yours.
  • Your story has no anti-social or anti-national content and it is vibrant of optimism.
  • You are able to write within allotted time.
  • Your story has an introduction, main body and conclusion.
  • Your story has a past and the result should never happen in future.

Preparing Story Narration In Five Minutes Before PPDT

1
ppdt

You are required to narrate your story to your group in the discussion stage of PPDT. After you finish writing your story your papers are taken away and by and large you are left with 5-10 minutes after which the discussion begins. This is a very small amount of time and you are pressurized at the max! But this is a very crucial amount of time as well.

Preparing Story Narration In Five Minutes Before PPDT

You can get ready to narrate your story in these 5 minutes if you read the following tips:

  1. Instead of feeling nervous and wasting your time, try to calm down first.
  2. Think that this is going to be fun, and you’ll be able to crack it, fill yourself with a huge amount of positive confidence.
  3. Now keep on repeating your story in your mind, plan up how you are going to narrate it.
  4. Keep the important points of the story in your mind, it not necessary to tell the story word by word so don’t feel worried if you don’t remember the exact words.
  5. You just have to keep the central idea of your story in your mind. How things turned out to be and be sure to make a central/main character.
  6. Now catch your nearest chest number or anybody in your group you like and narrate your story to him/her. Keep on repeating your story loudly to him/her, this will boost your confidence an make you ready to narrate story in front of others. Other may think that “pagal hai kya ye”, but say in your mind “pagal kaun hai pata chalega thode time mein”. Jokes apart, repeat your story continuously in your mind.
  7. Now take out your handkerchief  wipe your face, dust off your shoes and clothes from any dust with the help of a small cloth you have taken specially for this purpose. Now when your turn comes walkin with a good posture, be confident and narrate your story with proper words and I proper tone.

Situation Reaction Test for Women

0
Situation Reaction Test for Women

SRT or Situation Reaction Test is a part of the Psychological Testing Series. In this test you are given 60 situations and you have to write reactions on them, within 30 minutes. So roughly you get 30 seconds for each situation.

Just like TAT, in SRT also the reaction which women give is slightly different from men. Secondly just like pictures in TAT are different for women and women oriented pictures are shown in TAT to ladies, similarly the situations given for women may also differ. Also women are expected to give realistic reactions, not the one’s which look impractical and far from reality.

Also Read

Tips for our Lady Candidates to approach SRT

  • Give the most practical reaction you could give.
  • Write the reaction sticking closely to what you actually feel, don’t try to show over courage.
  • Women are indeed courageous, no doubt about that but when it comes to control an uncontrolled animal, you don’t have to control it, you simply have to help other people to be safe and inform the authorities, they’ll take care of the animal.
  • Hence when in a situation it is given like a tiger gets uncontrolled in a circus and is coming towards the crowd or you see a snake in a cinema hall, all you have to do is to help others to safely exit and also inform the authorities.
  • When a situation is telling you to go out late, you have to remember that in the reaction you’ll first write, ‘inform parents’.
  • In situations where you are going out with friends or out of station or late night group studies, you have to mention ‘take parents’ permission’.
  • There will be situations in which a chain snatcher or a thief will take away somebody’s thing and run, either in a moving train (where he’ll jump out of the train) or at a deserted place, you have to keep in mind that you don’t have to run behind the snatcher in a moving train or you don’t have to get down of the train in the deserted place.
  • All you have to do in above situations is to inform the railway authority and help the victim in all possible manners.
  • In case of any crime scene don’t run behind the accused that is having a weapon. You have to identify the accused, inform the police and cooperate in investigation.
  • If you see a car taking a child/girl forcefully then don’t go and fight with them, not down the car’s number, inform police and help in investigation.
  • If you are going somewhere and you lose all your all your belongings then you must inform the police and also at home to family.
  • In situations where you are having any differences with any relationship or person of your life then you must talk to them and sort out the matter with logic.
  • There could be situations where you are asked to choose between defense and other job (which will be easier for you & family), then without any doubt you have to choose defense because that is your passion and that is the reason you are here.

Bottom line:

Remember you have write the full action in short, and your reaction should be complete, don’t use the word ‘try to’ or ‘I will try to’ instead write ‘I will do____’ in any situation. You can do well in this test if you keep open your brain and use logic. Also practice sample situations provided on SSBCrack.
