I want to share my views regarding CDS mathematics paperwhich is the 3rd paper and necessary for entry into AFA, IMA and NA. I am going to discuss here the paper pattern, knowing which can help candidates like me and you to score high and clear the CDSE written exam. I would like to emphasize on attending 65 correct questions. There are few factors which govern our score in this part of exam.
CDS Mathematics Paper Structure
Speed: speed can be developed by regular practice and analyzing what kind of questions consumes more time and which portion consumes less time. Varies according to candidate’s preparation.
Analyzing topic of expertise or topics which can be mastered in few days: going through previous year papers helps us to know, in which portion one is good and in which one is average and where we are lacking. Like I know I am good and fast in arithmetic, geometry and mensuration portion so I will first go to these portions. Everyone has his own topic of expertise and it can be found if one wants to know.
Attending questions according to pattern: I have tried to give an idea based on my analyses of previous year question papers.
Algebra:-number of questions from algebra are 13-15.
Topics covered:-quadratic equation, linear equation in 1 and 2 variables, HCF and LCM of polynomials, basic factorization, and problem based on ages.
Arithmetic:-number of questions is 22 to 25.

Many candidates are confused about whether or not to use Hindi as a medium of speaking in their SSB interviews or GTO’s. Well friends SSB is a matter of five to six days hence your true personality is bound to come out. It is not like a test of one or two hour where you can very safely put on a cover to your real personality. Most of us are fluent in Hindi but not very fluent in English. This is certainly because we consider Hindi to be very own and mostly with our parents or friends we are talking in Hindi. On the other hand we consider English to be a formal language we are interacting with only selected people in English like our Boss, teacher or with people at work. The problem which arises is that we as youths are neither using English nor Hindi but Hinglish, which spoils our grammar and make us habitual to use slangs and slang language. Hence in SSB also we are ought to use it but definitely we must not use it.
The question my friends is whether we can use Hindi in SSB or not. As per my suggestion it is a no. In SSB you come across with two categories of people. One are your group mates and other is your board.
Obviously you are with your group mates for 24 hours of the day and gradually you build friendship, thus you become quiet informal with them and hence using English while talking to them all the time is difficult. It’s not a problem if you are using Hindi with them i.e. your group mates. One you have developed a bond with your group mates you all will be talking in Hindi or any other local language which connects you better and this is not a problem.
Next is the Board. You are there in the SSB to become an officer. An officer has to command a number of people. Thus they are required to use an official language in doing so. English is an official language of India which most of Indians understand in comparison to Hindi. Thus an officer by and large speaks in English. Well and if you have a command over English and are fluent in it then it’ll be an advantage for you only.
Let me divide the Tasks given in SSB and the scope of using Hindi/English there. Firstly on the screening day in PPDT you are asked to write a story which you cannot write in Hindi. In narration it is said that you can use Hindi if you get stuck but you are asked to revert back to English as soon as possible. This is a clear indication that they are expecting you to speak in English. In Discussion part of PPDT also there is no point discussing in Hindi.
When you get through the Screening, you face other tasks such as Psychological Tests where again you are expected to write responses in English. In GTO however your GTO might have an informal talk with you where he may use Hindi, you can use Hindi at that time but while doing tasks or giving lecturette you should stick to English. When your GTO asks you something in English you must answer in English only.
In interview and conference your IO or other officer will talk in English you are also expected to talk in English only. Hence in SSB you must stick to English as much as possible you can practice it well before try speaking in English with friends and family, read English newspaper and books. Start practicing now.

If you are attending SSB interview, you are supposed to know about Indian armed force, because it is evident that the organization you want to join, you must know, at least the basic details of it. Indian armed forces are the second largest fighting force in Asia and fourth largest in the world. It has three wings- The Indian Army, the Indian Air force and Indian navy.
The primary role of Indian armed forces are
Defense of India against foreign aggression through land, air or sea.
Assisting the Government to maintain law and order and to fight against insurgents.
Assisting relief operations in case of natural calamities
Protection of public properties
To fulfill such needs, the country needs efficient, robust and efficient soldiers and a talented officer- cadre to lead them. The country therefore needs young blood to come forward to join the dedicated service.
Our army won high esteem and fame during the world war and after independence it successfully dealt with all internal and external threats. It successfully dealt with foreign aggression in 5 major combats.
1948 India- Pak War
1962 Sino- Indian War
1965- Indo- Pak War
1971- Bangladesh liberation war
1999- Kargil War
In all these combats, our three services performed extremely well either in logistics role, or deterrent role or in combat role. Except in 1962 War with China, the three services have kept the Honour of the nation.
The choice of a suitable career confronts every young man and armed forces is always a better choice for them. But every aspirant must remember that they are trying to join an organization which has no parallel in the country. In army, officers command Jawans. They lead their men to achieve an aim. If you consider Kargil Conflict, there are ample examples of gallant junior leadership. For eg. Lt. Manoj Kumar Pandey, Capt. Vikram Batra etc. They led their men at front and considered the interest of their soldiers rather than their personal safety. A military commander is always optimistic, aggressive, cool headed , patriotic and gallant.
So before joining the armed forces, it is always better to understand what are the qualities of an armed forces officer. These qualities are tested at SSB Tests.
